What do you wear in the summer if you hav fat arms?

I hate my arms. They are fat. They are not in proportion to my body and are an awful shape, has been like this since I can remember.

I'm a size 14 top, 16 bottom and am at the biggest I've ever been. I'm also 29 and am a classic/casual/basic dresser. In the summer I like to wear chinos or denim shorts, basic tops with white/blue cardigans iykwim.

I'm just not sure what to do about my gigantic arms this year, I don't think I can face wearing short sleeved tees any more :-( and I can't sweat to death in cardigans all summer.

Find me some tops please! I have a very low budget!

Linen shirts/ tops?
I've got two M&S linen things that are 3/4 length sleeves and really nice in summer - I just bought a plain white and plain dark grey - their floral stuff was a bit too budget Mary Berry.

Last summer I lived in nice white light cotton shirts with a denim skirt/denim cut offs/boyfriend or skinny jeans. Strange really as my arms were the best they have ever been (I have serious work to do for this year Blush )

I have a White Company one, like this http://www.ebay.co.uk/usr/workingworld4u11 here

I also have a Boden one, it's not on website, I felt really good. Depending on how you feel you can either tuck in or have loose.

Mrswellyboot · 11/03/2014 20:28

I wear short sleeve fitted shirts for work

Loose cotton shirts (love gap or monsoon)

However, last summer in the sweltering heat at 38 weeks pregnant I still was so embarrassed of my arms I wore a cardigan Blush really hard to tone up that area despite all the swimming etc

Shirts aren't good for the fat armed. In my case I need a bigger size for the arms.

Cotton half sleeve tunic tops are good though.

Lizzylou · 11/03/2014 20:49

Oh no, the ones I have are VERY loose on arms, and very floaty/light but still structured, I have broad shoulders and a big bust so I can't do tunic type things, makes me look like a balloon on stilts.
I feel smart but casual in them, will be adding others this year.

LaTrucha I blame you for the fact I've just bought two summer dresses!

QuiteQuietly · 11/03/2014 21:05

hollyangel Love the kimono idea - off shopping shortly. Thanks.

My arms aren't particularly fat but I have bingo wings and my elbows are shot to hell. I go through phases of covering them up but other times I tell myself to stop being ridiculous, that they're just normal, middle-aged arms.

When I'm covering up I normally go for plain long-sleeved Ts and fitted shirts, cotton or linen. I keep it simple but try and make the jewelry, shoes, whatever, more interesting. I avoid cardigans and cover-ups - you may as well wear a sign that says 'I hate my arms'.

When I'm feeling more bloody minded I find length and style of sleeve make a big difference. E.g. a short sleeve ends right at the flappiest part of my arm so sleeveless is better. And a fitted style and a structured fabric are far more flattering than something loose and floaty.

Honestly, no one is looking at your arms.

Judydreamsofhorses · 09/07/2017 01:29

I'm fairly slim, but have always had baggy arms. I have really toned them up with an exercise from an old Callanetics DVD:

Hold your arms straight out with palms flat at your sides so you make a t shape
Rotate your hands/wrists so your palms are facing up
Raise up and down in gentle bobbing motions - just a couple of inches

I think the DVD is 75 motions, I try and do 25 every time I get up off my lazy bum every night.

I bought a really thin (and nice!) linen cardigan the other day from Gap. It's on sale (like everything always is at Gap!)

here

I have fab bingo wings and I still wear sleeveless tops etc. I used to be 4 stone heavier than the 16/18 size I am now so I have flappiness left from weight loss plus am 45 so my skin is getting less toned slowly anyway.

I promise no-one has ever commented on my arms. In fact looking back at photos of when I was larger, my arms would have looked a lot better completely sleeveless than stuffed into tight sleeves or cap sleeves that cut off at the wrong point.
