I've been given an amazing fake Mulberry bag, what would you do, keep or return?

Ive been after a mulberry bag for ages, Im in the process of saving up for one but my poor mum went on ebay and bought one for me not knowing anything about them, bless her,

Anyway its real leather, all the hardware is stamped, Ive even checked it out down to the size of the trees /trunk on the metal hardware and its all an exact copy, the fact its Leather makes me debate whether to return it.

I feel horrible having to tell my mum its a fake but the serial number is a dead giveaway, I just typed it into google and it came up on a list of most faked numbers, apart from that I wouldnt have a clue to be honest (although I know die hard fans probably would, but i dont mix in that type of circle! Wink)

So what do I do, she paid £75 for it and thought she had got a real bargain, shes been telling all the neighbours how much she paid and think she's done me a massive favour. Im always a bit Hmm at fakes, never buy them but this 1 is an amazing copy of something it would take ma at least another 6 months to save up for! The seller had listed it as just a Tan leather bag, it was only when she saw the mulberry print she realised what it was and thought the seller had made a mistake, so on her part the seller has done no wrong really, its just the zip is a bit stiff (also a giveaway for me) and I know easily replaced but theres no way on eart Id have spent £75 for a fake bag with a dodgy zip, what would you do?

Genuine question, is the Ebay seller stating it's a Mulberry fake?

DebbieOfMaddox · 16/02/2014 10:37

OP said that it was just listed as "tan leather handbag". It is a tan leather handbag.

Martorana · 16/02/2014 10:39

"Bun- but the quality isn't the same."

Grin that's exactly what my kids say about "labels"

"But mum- they are so much better quality"

Forgetting that they are probably made in the same factory and by the same people as the labels!

caketinrosie · 16/02/2014 10:40

Hmm pm the link you say? Oh go on then! Grin

lurkingaround · 16/02/2014 10:44

Really it doesn't matter. OP got a gift and v lovely thought of a leather bag from her mum. It's a gift. Keep it.

MrsCampbellBlack · 16/02/2014 10:52

I am with you Linus re. fakes.

Honestly its a horrible trade - buy a nice non fake leather bag for 75.

I do feel for vix though but I'd have to tell my mum and ask her to return it as Anniani suggested.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 16/02/2014 11:10

In this instance I would use the bag, it isn't like the OP actively went out and bought a fake. It would be so hurtful to her mum. It's a bag, use it and enjoy itSmile

And Wrt to the stealing comment, there's a whole other discussion about wether it's moral to charge people about 600 quid more for a bag that cost probably no more than 30 quid to make.

Enjoy your bag OP, keep saving for a 'real' one if you want to but don't tell your mum, just quietly swap then over when the time comes and give the Ebay one to a charity shopSmile

TickleMyTitsTillFriday · 16/02/2014 11:45

I would keep it witbout a doubt :)
(I would alsp love a pm Wink)

HandsOffMyGazBaz · 16/02/2014 11:55

Oh I'm not looking for a pm oh no!!!

ProjectGainsborough · 16/02/2014 11:57

I wouldn't say anything - I think it's really sweet of your mum.

And just out of interest, can I have a PM please?

BigPawsBrown · 16/02/2014 12:10

Pm for me too please!!

Innogen · 16/02/2014 12:13

Can I have the link too please?

LadyMaryLikesCake · 16/02/2014 12:16

How do you check the serial numbers? I thought they changed them all the time because of the fake bags? Confused

VodkaRevelation · 16/02/2014 12:32

It would bother me Linus.

I have never been able to get my head around either a. Spending ludicrous amounts of money on things just because of the name behind them or, b. spending less money on things that are manufactured to look like ludicrously expensive items.

When you also take into account the other illegal trades these manufacturers are linked to it just all seems so pointless. But, gosh, look at my lovely "mulberry bag".

applecrumbleandcream · 16/02/2014 15:11

Could I have the link too please?

hokhoihioh · 16/02/2014 15:22

I definitely wouldn't keep or use a counterfeit bag, but I don't know if I'd upset your mother by telling her.

Hmm at those asking for a link. Nice.

I agree with Linus, especially considering the illegal activities they're connected to and support.

hokhoihioh · 16/02/2014 15:23

I'll have the link too, please. Somebody ought to report the ebay seller.

pippop1 · 16/02/2014 15:28

Bit of candle wax rubbed onto the zip both sides should help ease it.

YeahThatsWhatISaid · 16/02/2014 15:31

I think I would return it too but I would make it very clear to your lovely mum that she wasn't to know and that you really, really appriciate the thought. It's illegal to sell fakes and I wouldn't be comfortable supporting an illegal trade. I know some people don't care but this is a huge, huge buisness.

MrsCampbellBlack · 16/02/2014 15:41

I am pretty surprised at all the people asking for links. Especially as bag threads are normally full of the morally outraged.

coffeeinbed · 16/02/2014 15:46

Just a thought. OPs mum may have unwittingly bought the fake but by providing the link OP actually knowingly facilitates the sale of fakes.

coffeeinbed · 16/02/2014 15:49

If she does,of course

vix1980 · 16/02/2014 15:52

Hi, thanks for all your replies, I honestly cant believe i posted the link, I didnt even think twice, I should have realised it was stupid to though!

I've told her its a fake though, said id checked the serial number as the zip felt a bit dodgy, she wasnt to bothered and said well at leasts its real leather isnt it- every cloud and all that!

SIL bought me a handmade fake mulberry from turkey. £150. It's perfect in every way bar the serial number. Very high quality bag but I'm nervous of wearing it, no matter how good I do feel like abit of a tit with a fake bag.
^petty as it may seem I feel exactly like this elbombera , Im the kind of a person who'd rather have the real thing or not at all, I also agree with everyone saying I could have got a nicer bag without fake badges on for that amount, true, and if up to me I would have gone to tk maxx and got a leather bargain Smile. I also agree though with those saying Mulberry bags are stupidly overpriced, in fact I remember before the current CEO came in and they were averagely priced, should have bought one back then! This has actually put me off Mulberry bags if im honest, whats the point in saving up for months, spending it on a bag and people think oh shes got an amazing fake! Theres too many fakes out there, and after seeing the quality of this one, I wonder whether some of the ones ive seen women using have now been fake!, theres me pining for one and theyve just nipped over to turkey for a bag spree! Grin

As good as it is (and ive been down canal st in new york and seem the crap they produce, its doesnt even come close to this bag) Ill still feel a bit weird using it, so ive offered it back to her to use. and if she doesnt want it then were stuck with a £75 leather bag Smile

YeahThatsWhatISaid · 16/02/2014 15:55

Have you left it too long to return it?

vix1980 · 16/02/2014 15:57

Just a thought. OPs mum may have unwittingly bought the fake but by providing the link OP actually knowingly facilitates the sale of fakes.

Nope, certainly dont, cross posted with you about that,Ive been given fake bags in the past, good quality or not theyve gone to the charity shop, and I wouldnt have bought this myself in a million years, I am part torn because my mum was trying to do something lovely for me and I didnt want her being ripped off, but at the same time a Fake bag is just not my kind of thing. At first I was excited by the quality but the more i think about it I will feel weird carrying it around if i used it, some people are fine im not knocking you if you want one, its just not my thing though.

I provided the link as Ive never seen a copy as good as this, still doesnt make it right though, but i was surprised how much work someone has put into creating a fake! also the fact someone asked me which is why i posted it, certainly not to get people to go onto the site and order a bag because ive said ive got one??
