I've been given an amazing fake Mulberry bag, what would you do, keep or return?

Ive been after a mulberry bag for ages, Im in the process of saving up for one but my poor mum went on ebay and bought one for me not knowing anything about them, bless her,

Anyway its real leather, all the hardware is stamped, Ive even checked it out down to the size of the trees /trunk on the metal hardware and its all an exact copy, the fact its Leather makes me debate whether to return it.

I feel horrible having to tell my mum its a fake but the serial number is a dead giveaway, I just typed it into google and it came up on a list of most faked numbers, apart from that I wouldnt have a clue to be honest (although I know die hard fans probably would, but i dont mix in that type of circle! Wink)

So what do I do, she paid £75 for it and thought she had got a real bargain, shes been telling all the neighbours how much she paid and think she's done me a massive favour. Im always a bit Hmm at fakes, never buy them but this 1 is an amazing copy of something it would take ma at least another 6 months to save up for! The seller had listed it as just a Tan leather bag, it was only when she saw the mulberry print she realised what it was and thought the seller had made a mistake, so on her part the seller has done no wrong really, its just the zip is a bit stiff (also a giveaway for me) and I know easily replaced but theres no way on eart Id have spent £75 for a fake bag with a dodgy zip, what would you do?

Can you PM me the link too please? You're mum sounds very lovely by the way. My mum wouldn't have a clue what a mulberry was!

ClaraFox · 16/02/2014 08:25

I'd definitely not tell my mum and I'd be grateful but as the owner of mulberry handbags ( all have been gifts! I'm not that rich! ) I wouldn't carry a fake

Lagoonablue · 16/02/2014 08:29

Keep it. Mulberry bags are vastly overpriced. It is a bag.

lotsofcheese · 16/02/2014 08:34

I'd keep it too. But I wouldn't tell her. If she asked about it, I'd let her down gently.

EirikurNoromaour · 16/02/2014 08:56

Keep it and save up for a different one.

KatyPeary · 16/02/2014 08:58

Oh keep it. Sweet of your mum, she bought it in good faith. And don't tell her it's fake!

Annianni · 16/02/2014 09:03

I wouldn't want to keep it, I certainly wouldn't want to use it... and I think that you could go through ebay for a return.

The seller might not have advertised it as a fake, but selling fake items is against their rules, so they should refund the money to your dm.

I think you need to tell your dm incase she decides to buy something else.

Martorana · 16/02/2014 09:09

To quote Mr Spock "A difference that makes no difference is no difference."

Why wouldn't people "carry a fake"? It's a lovely, good quality leather bag. Mulberry are just playing on people's snobbery with their pricing."Look at me- I'm so rich I can waste the best part of a grand on something that's made in the Middle East for about a tender"

Martorana · 16/02/2014 09:11

And I like the idea of random people on the Tube googling the serial number of the person sitting next to them's bag to see if it's fake or not.......:)

mammadiggingdeep · 16/02/2014 09:14

Bless your mum...so lovely!

Keep it...use your savings for a shopping spree :)

MrsSchadenfreude · 16/02/2014 09:15

I'd keep it - it's lovely of your Mum, and Mulberry are vastly overpriced. Think of it as a lovely leather bag and enjoy it. Zips can be a bit stiff when you first get a bag. It will probably ease in.

And can someone pm me the link

GingerMaman · 16/02/2014 09:16

I would keep it! And do you have the link to the bag on eBay? Smile

GingerMaman · 16/02/2014 09:17

PM me the link too please Smile

Annianni · 16/02/2014 09:19

Why do people want to spend money on a fake bag?
There are some lovely leather bags about, without having fake badges on them!?

LinusDKD · 16/02/2014 09:20

this is an old article but it still stands today.

Maybe some food for thought.

GingerMaman · 16/02/2014 09:21

I've been on the look out for a decent leather bag with a decent price tag for over a year now, and I still haven't found one! Hmm

This^^

I agree with LagoonaBlue and Martorana. I admit to being a bit of a philistine about bags and fail to see why, if the quality is the same, a bag that costs several hundred pounds is any better than one that costs £75 (which IMO is a huge amount to pay for a bag anyway) if all you are paying for is a "genuine" serial number. Do you think other people really care?

KatyPeary · 16/02/2014 09:30

And can I have a PM too please Blush

lurkingaround · 16/02/2014 09:35

Your mum bought this in good faith. If you hadn't googled the serial number you'd never have known it was fake. By all accounts this is a lovely leather bag. Use it as such. It was a lovely thought and gift from your mum. Keep it. Buy an authentic one if you like but don't send this one back.

stillfrazzled · 16/02/2014 09:38

PMs, you say? Yes please...

Whether Mulberry are overpriced is not the issue here.

Buying fakes is stealing.
You steal from the designer, from the people who manufactured it, from the sales assistants.

Your mum had all the best intentions but that doesn't make it right.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 16/02/2014 10:27

I've seen the ones from Turkey, they are amazing and very good quality.

LinusDKD · 16/02/2014 10:29

Doesn't it bother you that the people who counterfeit goods (not just handbags and clothes but also, sadly, medicines like malaria and HIV/AIDS medication) are often the same people involved in drugstrafficking, armstrafficking, moneylaundering etc?

I have been lusting after a Chanel 2.55 for years but I'd rather not have one than a fake one.

For the reasons above, not because it's a fake (to be honest, some fakes are so good, only an expert can tell the difference so the person sitting next to you on the tube certainly won't be able to)

ClaraFox · 16/02/2014 10:31

Bun- but the quality isn't the same.

I have three mulberries. And I have a Hobbs bag too. That's it. The mulberries far far exceed the quality of the Hobbs bag which in itself is also a lovely bag.

However, a bag is a bag is a bag.
