Help me - I need to dye my hair

flashingnose · 04/08/2006 14:16

Bar a few sessions with Shaders and Toners in my youth and a year of having my hair highlighted pre children when I could afford it, I haven't dyed my hair. However, there's more than a few grey ones now and I fancy dyeing it but haven't got much money.

Am I a fool to think about dyeing it at home? Is maintenance a nightmare? Any recommendations re brands etc? Or should I bite the bullet and get it done at a salon? I've got dark brown hair btw.

TIA

So good you said it twice

How much does it cost, on average? It's a loooong time since I had highlights done.

you could try a semi-permanent colour, superdrug have quite good ones, what colour are you going for?

MacSporran · 04/08/2006 14:24

Oh snap - shall await the response to this!

MacSporran · 04/08/2006 14:25

Has anyone tried those ones that Davina McCall advertises? - Garnier Nutrisse??

zippitippitoes · 04/08/2006 14:25

sorry yes I'm trying to type with my head pitched over to let my ear drops down into myn ear rather than down my nech and accidently hit twice

\I had a cut and blow dry and foils with a semi permanent with two colours highlights last week and it was 65.00

flashingnose · 04/08/2006 14:27

Sort of auburn-y if I was doing it myself. Probably highlights if I was having it done.

Has anyone tried the one where you dye it and then put highlights in yourself?

Blimey zippi, where do you live? I'm about to pay £43.50 for a cut and blow dry only

i tried that one it was pants, you could always go for half head highlights which would work out cheaper.

MacSporran · 04/08/2006 14:29

I live in Norfolk, I can get a cut and blow-dry for £17!

apronstrings · 04/08/2006 14:30

got as far as reading shaders and toners and disappeared off down memory lane.....

JackieNo · 04/08/2006 14:30

I've done both (did my own yesterday, just the roots, really, as am a bit skint at the moment), and you definitely do get a better result at the hairdressers. But I think it also depends how much grey you've got. I've got loads now, and while it was fine doing it myself when I only had a few grey hairs, I'm not getting the same results now. Used 'Movida' one yesterday. I'd also advise if you're doing it yourself, not to go too dark.

flashingnose · 04/08/2006 14:31

I have a horrible feeling that I'd be talking over £100 for what you've had done zippi

I'm just about to take the kids out - will check back later. Thanks all

I've used those loreal ones where you put the main colour on first then put the highlights in. Around about £9 or cheaper.

SpaceCadet · 04/08/2006 14:31

ive dyed my own hair for years.

zippitippitoes · 04/08/2006 14:32

warwickshire..it was the boss too

my old hairdresser was 90.00 for the same and I hated it last time so changed..hated it so much i posted about it on here..love it this time

SpaceCadet · 04/08/2006 14:32

20 quid here for wash, cut, blow dry and straightening.

MacSporran · 04/08/2006 14:33

SC-Which dye do you use?

southeastastra · 04/08/2006 14:33

it's fun isn't it! toners and shaders and sun-in.

you could also try and find a cheaper hairdresser or a mobile one!

yorkshirepud · 04/08/2006 14:36

Have tried every type going and I'd definitely advise you to go to a salon. Besides which, where else are you going to get time to sit down, read a magazine and have someone else fetch you cups of tea? Go for it.

SpaceCadet · 04/08/2006 14:37

i use l'oreal revitalise.

MacSporran · 04/08/2006 14:38

Thanks

JackieNo · 04/08/2006 14:38

I think also that if you're going to do it yourself for the first time, it's worth doing a semi-permanent one, just to get the hang of it before you dive into permanent colour, so to speak.

SpaceCadet · 04/08/2006 14:41

i would always advise doing a strand test first to check the colour result..and a skin test.
