Christening outfit for a boy

So this is a while off as not organised yet but just pondering.....

Have a family traditional christening outfit ( long frilly affair) which I would have used for a girl but not sure is suitable for a boy these days unless you are Prince George. Not sure if dh would
Let me put me him in it either.

Can't stand suit, waistcoat and tie outfits.

Seen sailer suit outfits but I think possibly a bit twee.

Seen a lovely linen romper in John lewis but as he prob won't be christened till he is about 9 months is he too old for it?:

What do people put boys in these days ?

No advice but watching with interest same dilemma !

DS was christened at 14 months in the summer. He ended up wearing some dungarees from the white company which had fine blue and white stripes on them and a long sleeved white tshirt underneath. I was happy. He was happy. (And looked like a cute little boy!)

I bought DSs christening outfit in Zara kids, it was a beautiful pale grey knitted cardigan and trousers set, with a shirt underneath (but the shirt is attached to a vest with poppers so it didn't ride up). I was impressed by their stuff. Finished with burberry baby booties!

The romper is lovely and I wouldn't say 9months is too old for it at all, go for it!

I would use the traditional outfit, boy or girl.

Bodicea · 05/02/2014 14:22

this is the outfit. be honest would you put a boy in it?

I'd use the family gown, no question about it Envy

tabbycat7 · 05/02/2014 14:36

My boys wore a simple cotton version of the dress thing.

MarianneEnjolras · 05/02/2014 19:54

Yes I would. He's a baby he won't care or mind.

It's a traditional family heirloom (presumably) so how lovely will it be to have the pictures of him in it.

Both of my DSs wore outfits from this company:

Minnesota those outfits are gorgeous. They are definitely a backup uf can't get husband on board!
Perhaps I will use the money angle. " This outfit is free!"

I wish we had a family outfit, but it has been lost and would've only fitted a newborn anyway as that was the fashion back in the day.
I bought the JL linen romper and the JL linen shirt/trs with blue cricket jumper for my son's Christening last autumn. He was 4 months.
He wore the shirt/trs but we didnt bother with the jumper. Lots of people said he looked lovely - not too overfrilled or twee. If you want to go all out, I love the angels and fishes raphael gown www.booglesandbump.co.uk/shop/angels-and-fishes/angels-and-fishes-raphael-unisex-gown-with-ribbon/#!prettyPhoto

use the family gown. traditions like this are great and a long white gown is traditional for these events boy or girl. If it's at a traditional church the (quite likely male) priest will also be wearing a long white gown so it's not remotely girly. Yes I would do the same (and did with my DS)

My two boys wore the dress gown that all members of DH's family had worn before them for four generations. It was starting to yellow a bit with age, to be honest, but I wouldn't have dreamt of putting them in anything else.
If there's a perfect time for tradition; a Christening is definitely it!

LittleBabyPigsus · 05/02/2014 22:33

I hate traditional christening gowns, sorry, and wouldn't care about it being a family heirloom. That's just me not caring for tradition generally though. A nice romper and cardi is fine, and they are much comfier and look nicer on babies.

goodbyeyellowbrickroad · 05/02/2014 22:35

We used our family gown when DS was 13 months old but only for the service and photos afterwards. He looked adorable! He then wore short sleeved shirt and trousers from baby Gap for the party and again looked adorable.

Go with the gown - it's tradition and lovely.

TwoNoisyBoys · 05/02/2014 22:40

Although we had a traditional christening gown in the family, I didn't use it. I suppose it's more 'girly' because it's heavily beaded brocade, which was especially made for my niece (it was made by me, actually!) My mum hoped that it would be used for all the babies following my niece, but I really thought it looked too much like a little girls dress for my baby boy. When he was christened I dressed him in a pair of beige needle cord trousers, a white polo shirt and a navy and beige tank top. He looked scrumptious :) :)

Sarah Louise do lovely boys outfits and rompers for christenings http://www.cachetkids.co.uk/proddetail.php?prod=SAL/8976-ROMPER-WHITE-BLUE&gclid=CK6c6qeMt7wCFYWWtAodsjMARw for example

ScooseIsLoose · 06/02/2014 08:40

Sorry try again example

suntodayplease · 06/02/2014 09:16

Similar problem here, although DDs outfit isn't a family traditional one, it was bought for her. But it's definitely a baby girls cream dress. DS will probably be younger when christened so it is unlikely to fit in any event. Quite like the idea of an outfit from somewhere like the white company so it can be worn again. I had a look at mamas and papas and wasn't so keen on the little suits or the £70 cashmere babygrow! Will check out Zara as that also sounds promising.
