This is more of a summer problem I'd love to go round in vest tops but I don't like my upper arms bein seen so tend to have to add cardigans and end up boiling or year clothes from marks and sparks designed for hiding bingo wings and so aging. Any ideas??

I also no longer wear sleeveless tops or dresses (unless I am abroad somewhere very hot) as I don't like my upper arms.

If I wear vest tops at all I tend to wear a sheer shirt over the top, but normally I just wear short sleeve cotton blouses or t-shirts.

Hope that helps

Shallishanti · 26/01/2014 21:38

you are joking?
Until a couple of ago nobody had yet decided that women's arms had to meet some arbitrary standard. I'm sure your arms are absolutley fine and nobody is giving them a second glance. Wear what you want to wear.

peasandlove · 26/01/2014 21:40

how bout some tricep dips?

ggirl · 26/01/2014 21:40

approaching 30 and you're worried...please!?
you'll look back in 20-30 yrs and slap yourself
don't worry about your arms yet

Shallishanti · 26/01/2014 21:43

it's all a con to get you to buy stuff

milktraylady · 26/01/2014 21:46

It's January, you've got atleast 3 months before any summery clothes are worn. If you do 5 mins of arm weights each day your arms will be toned & stronger.

Try these 3 to start with, 1kg weights
Tricep dips
Bicep curls
Press ups against the wall

Doing free weights increases your bone density & much better than dieting. Enjoy!

Op, I was thinking of bringing up arm coverage on the 50+ thread but I am nearly twice your age!

I realise I don't know what your arms are like but keeping them covered for the rest of your life is terribly limiting unless there is some special reason?

I am sorry as you probably want advice rather than someone pontificating like this but I am horrified that you are thinking this way before you are even 30.

FudgyFanjo · 26/01/2014 22:39

My sister has a badly scarred forearm from a horrific accident she had nearly 20 years ago. She refuses to cover it up...I'm sending some of her confidence your way.

BIWI · 26/01/2014 22:41

Are you kidding?! I'm 54 and will happily wear sleeveless stuff in the summer

Specialbrew · 26/01/2014 22:42

Is it a mumsnet thing that often when posters ask for style and beauty advice, posters reply by not actually answering the original posters question?

TorcBasilandLime · 26/01/2014 22:45

oh stop it! approaching thirty and you can't show off your arms!

jillian michaels!

I'm in my forties and hell when the sun comes out I'm going to wear short sleeves, at my advanced age

BIWI · 26/01/2014 22:57

Specialbrew - what is it that you think people haven't answered? Should we go along with the OP's ridiculous assertion that just because she is 'approaching' 30 that she shouldn't wear sleeveless stuff?

I can't bear the ageism that is so apparent on Mumsnet.

The OP didn't give us any reason why she shouldn't wear sleeveless stuff, apart from her age.

So I reserve the right, totally, to give her - and anyone else short shrift - based on age-related posts.

Specialbrew · 26/01/2014 23:08

BIWI, OP has asked What she should WEAR as she doesn't like her arms. I can't see that anyone has answered that question so far.

Why does she have to give a reason for not wanting to show her arms? In this context it's irrelevant, she is asking for CLOTHING advice, on a style and beauty thread, and so far she has only had people commenting on how she should stop worrying/do some exercise. Sorry, I just don't get it.

Floisme · 26/01/2014 23:11

Ok fair enough, I'll try and answer the question: Long sleeved shirts and T-shirts, a linen cardigan over a vest top. Or try wearing something sleeveless but quite structured e.g. a shift dress - you might be surprised. And, um, that's it. It is a very, very limiting way to dress.

And now please can someone tell me what the fuck is going on to make young women - no strike that, women of any age - feel they have to cover up their bodies?

Bunbaker · 26/01/2014 23:12

I'm 55 and still wear halter necks in summer. Although I have taken note of the exercises mentioned to keep my arms trim Grin.

Please don't be too self conscious to wear clothes that you are comfortable in. Don't swelter in a cardigan.

Shallishanti · 26/01/2014 23:13

OP said that she would like to wear vest/sleevless tops in summer. We are saying 'go for it'

whereisshe · 26/01/2014 23:17

If it gets hot, or I'm abroad somewhere hot, I wear cotton vests with cotton shirts over them generally. I mainly do it to avoid sunburn but it also hides arms and keeps you cool. Fabric choice is key though - you need light cotton not heavy cotton and absolutely no manmade fibres. And loose, not fitted.

BIWI · 26/01/2014 23:21

Well, to be honest, if the OP doesn't like her upper arms to be seen, but also finds it too hot if she covers them up, then I'm not sure what advice will really help her, other than to say 'just go for it'?

She didn't say anything about being overweight, and I didn't assume that she was. I just think it's terribly sad that someone who isn't yet 30 would think that part of her body isn't 'appropriate' to be on show

Snowdown · 26/01/2014 23:23

I'm 42, my arms are my best feature...I always thought that my legs are/were bloody awful. So I wear sleeveless tops with maxis in the summer.....mostly. Last year I dared wear shorts, it felt so liberating and you know what? my legs weren't half as bad as I thought - when I compared them to other people who were strutting their stuff, looking cool and relaxed.

whereisshe · 26/01/2014 23:24

Not to say you need to hide your arms. Up to you...

Sharaluck · 26/01/2014 23:24

I only like to show my upper arms if the dress/top is particularly special/flattering. I don't rule out sleeveless but I am quite fussy iykwim. So if you see something that you really like and it is sleeveless, try it on.

Otherwise I would always prefer to wear sleeves. I never cover up with cardigans though. I am ALWAYS on the lookout for nice tshirts and tops with short sleeve as unfortunately they are not as common as the sleeveless tops are in summer. So it does involve a lot of looking around.

UterusUterusGhali · 27/01/2014 00:09

I haven't uncovered my arms since my mid twenties. A combination of KP, self harm scars and an embarrassing homemade tattoo.

Op there are a few kimono tops in the shops atm. Try new look. Very flattering. Wear with vest.

Longer-armed tshirts are good, if harder to find. I get mine from m&s although they're getting more common.

Safari-style shirts are my staple, but they suit me. They often have 1/2 length sleeves.

I wear kaftans and plain boden dresses.

UterusUterusGhali · 27/01/2014 00:13

I might get this although it's polyester. I have a cotton one from dotty p's.

piklepants · 27/01/2014 06:12

Thanks uterus. Yes it's for similar reasons to u that I hide my arms. I was a stupid teen and I really don't want people judging me on School run pick ups etc. I would definitely wonder if I noticed scars like I have on someone else so I really need to keep them covered its just finding slightly longer sleeve t shirts that aren't designed for older people can be hard as like with this thread people assume it's to hide fat. My arms are not in need of toning picking up two heavy toddlers all day sees to that! If anyone notices nice tops with mid length sleeves in shops could u post a link I'd be very grateful thanks! It is indeed a very limiting way to dress though:-(
