Boots with a grippy sole?

Cantdothisagain · 13/01/2014 09:30

Not stylish and not beautiful but I really need some boots with more grip than the ones I've got. Just so I can walk to school and back without falling over! I'm a European size 36 and happy to spend as much or little as needed. Would prefer them to look reasonably ok - so flat winter boots suitable for a school run of a mile and back, with a grippy sole. Anyone able to help me? Thanks!

Clarks Clarks Clarks! They have some lovely biker style boots with a chunky sole that also look quite nice and have really good grips. I live in mine. I am a total convert to Clarks shoes, having eschewed them since being at school - they have some lovely styles and they are sooooo comfy - and not at all like the granny styles you will be thinking of if you had the same image of them as I did Wink

Clarks! Orinoco Jazz! I love them and am on my second pair.

Stinklebell · 13/01/2014 10:20

What about Caterpillar Anna

I've got the old Mardy ones but they're identical as far as I can see. Warm, comfy and have seen me through several winters and still going strong.

I've seen them in all sorts of places cheaper than on the link I've posted, that was just the first one I got when I Googled

Cantdothisagain · 13/01/2014 10:48

I have just looked at Clarks - am amazed that there are some nice boots there - but you're right; there are! I can't see that the soles look super grippy though? My current boots are from Fat Face and purport to grip but they really don't.

I like the look of the Cat Anna boots - can see they grip! Are they heavy on the foot ? (I'm used to flat heels for walking).

The main concern for me is ice - have wellies for snow but today was frosty and I struggled in my allegedly grippy Fat Face boots...

What about Sorel snow boots?

Dontletthemgetyoudown · 13/01/2014 10:56

merrell these

I also have the puffin ??? think they are called, could be oslo, really warm and good grips.

GemmaTeller · 13/01/2014 10:57

I've got Caterpillar Mardy ones - they are ace!!

Biped · 13/01/2014 11:02

My Clarks ones are a bit like this though not exactly the same:

www.clarks.co.uk/p/20355687

If you scroll through the pictures, you can see an image of the bottom of the sole and see what you think.

I am evangelical about Clarks Grin

Cantdothisagain · 13/01/2014 11:16

Thanks all - some great suggestions there. I think I need to go shopping! Can Cat, merrell or Sorel be tried on in high street shops? I will also try Clarks - I see the soles do look a bit grippy but my Fat Face ones do too and they aren't!

Snow+Rock stock Sorel I believe. But asos or zalando have free returns and both stock them, I think Internet is easier...

Ditavontitty · 13/01/2014 13:20

Not Clarks Orinoco jazz-I bought them last year and fell 3 times on ice! I gave them to the charity shop. I find wellies or boots with a rubber sole are the best for icy conditions.

WhereIsMyHat · 13/01/2014 13:23

Surfdome sell sorel boots and you'll fit youth sizes which are half the price of women's.

Stinklebell · 13/01/2014 13:23

I've seen Cat in a few shops, Animal was the last place I saw them, but I think I've seen them in Debenhams, and in a Sole Trader shop in an outlet village near my mum. I vaguely remember seeing them in Office as well

They are a little heavy but not uncomfortably so

LeonardWentToTheOfficeChristma · 13/01/2014 13:23

I watched a thing on icy ground a while ago and apparently the more of the sole makes contact with the ground the better therefore flat smooth soles have more grip than you'd think. More friction I beleive - will see if I can find a link...

Stinklebell · 13/01/2014 13:26

Also, is a 36 a 3?

If so, they're here half price www.usc.co.uk/caterpillar

ouryve · 13/01/2014 13:26

Rieker Eiker - grippy, proper wool lining and nice and comfy. Waterproof, so are good in snow, too. Price comparable to Clarks. I got mine for £59. I'm on my second pair - first pair still functional, but scruffy and tread is worn, after well over 1000 miles of school trudges.

Stinklebell · 13/01/2014 13:26

Sorry, better link www.usc.co.uk/caterpillar-anna-high-boots-186201

Dontletthemgetyoudown · 13/01/2014 14:09

merrell usually available in outdoors shops, like blacks etc.

CrispyFB · 13/01/2014 14:34

One of the great things about Clarks is that you can order in dozens of the things to the store from the website in your size (including the wide fitting) for free. Then you try them all on, and just pay for the one you want (or none of them!) And you can get Quidco cashback too Grin

My Clarks are pretty grippy, I have to say, more so than most brands. Although for proper snow/ice I am planning on putting YakTrax on the bottom.

I think I do actually have the ones linked to above!

I have Merrell hiking boots/shoes and they are fabulous. Never rubbed, and I walked over ten miles in them first day out. They've covered probably close to a thousand miles now and still look as good as new. Definitely a good brand.

thepurplepenguin · 13/01/2014 14:50

I have Clarks national spice (not sugar) and they are super-grippy...

worldgonecrazy · 13/01/2014 15:00

I just had winter soles put on my favourite normal boots. Problem solved. They're not too chunky either and they grip on anything.

If you're in Birmingham and have seen a woman looking like she's trying to skate (and failing) that's me testing out my winter soles.

Hermione123 · 13/01/2014 15:03

I have awful balance - no shoes are great, but get some yak trax to go over any boots, they grip very well. Have boots from gamefish, personally find boots with a separate heel grip better than completely flat ones

Cantdothisagain · 13/01/2014 20:27

Off to google yaxtrax! In the meantime though Amazon are selling size 3 of the Cat Mardy boots - the old version of Anna- for £33. I am tempted to just get them for that price. I have Prime so free delivery anyway. Anyone think that's a bad idea to buy without trying on? I'm a pretty standard foot size...

RayPurchase · 13/01/2014 20:55

I've just bought some yaktrax to go over my wellies - friends from Calgary recmended them so I'm pretty confident they will be good!
