Please give me your opinion - do I want to spend £50 on a cloak from a charity shop?

Which I may or may not wear. At 48 I'd have trouble pulling it off, but it's soooo lovely - really heavy and well made. Think Scottish Widow style - but sadly I don't look a bit like her. And they've put it aside till this morning .....

Has it got those armholes where you stick your arms through and hoik up your bosom (but get your point 2sugars! )

Personally I would say step away from the cloak but I'm just boring and I don't push the fashion boundaries.

I bought a ballroom dress I have no use for (I dont compete) and I dont fit in it. I like to look at it and put it on sometimes. If you want iy get it!

Get it if you want it! Sometimes nice things are just nice to have, even if impractical...

I have a vintage velveteen coat with massive fake fur collar that I bought ina vintage shop in Austin, Texas. I have worn it a couple of times but mainly it just hangs in my room and I like looking at it. So I would say buy it and view it as a charity donation.

I have one from M&S (bought 2 winters ago) I haven't worn it (yet) because I need to take it somewhere to have the pesky fur cut off the sleeves , I can cope with the neckline fur at a pinch. There's no hood though

I bought it because I love it and it's the kind of thing that is classic and I will wear sometime
And actually, if I pull my hair back and look mysterious, I could do a good, if much older, Scottish Widows woman.

No cats but I've got two golden agouti brown guinea-pigs. Is that enough to get away with the look?

For god's bloody sake when did Style and Beauty get so negative? Op this sounds like a one-off piece so normal rules like 'will it suit me?' really don't apply. You obviously love it and I bet you would get a lot of pleasure from owning it. So the only question is, can you afford £38/£50? If the answer is 'yes', then get it. Please.

I am currently lusting after a bright green Mongolian furry collar....which will go with nothing I own and I may never wear. But I love it. This thread has decided it, I am going to buy it.
It may be draped over the wire mannequin in the corner of my bedroom for ever more, but I will be able to admire it, and stroke it.

I would say get it. The problem with shopping is you never really know what is going to be a good purchase until you've got it and then you either wish you hadn't, or that you had bought two. It's all just a crazy gamble.

Is it a charity you'd donate to anyway? In which case you can think of it as a £38 charitable donation and a free marvellous cloak!

If it sits in the wardrobe, better to have 'wasted' £38 in a charity shop than high street chain, imo

Bizarrely I have a black wool Scottish widows cape. It is ankle length and has a floppy hood and balances on a very fine line between fancy dress and glamorous. It is utterly impractical and doesn't really keep you warm. I paid 7 quid for it in oxfam 20 odd years ago. It gets 2 outings a year, Halloween and new year if dressed up. I wouldn't part with it, but I wouldn't replace it for 50 quid myself

Thoughts from both sides of the fence make complete and utter sense. They were the thoughts I had too, that was the dilemma. It's black, basking seals, with a green lining. And I'm going to blame no one but myself. And I never do evenings out - last week there was a 6th form entry meeting and I got all excited about going out forthat, so no, Bearleigh! Yes! I would. Even if I only wore it for the occasional walk in the countryside.

£50 seems a lot for a charity shop, but logically, I'd rather give £50 to charity than to some ordinary profit-driven shop; and the item is of higher quality than you'd get for the same price in a shop. So you win and the charity wins.

I feel strongly that when something speaks to you like that, you should stop thinking and do it. We'll all be dead in the ground in a hundred years, who'll care then if you wore a fabulous cloak that you loved, or stuck to the uniform deemed acceptable by the arbitrary rules of your day

I have one and it's gorgeous. Rarely wear it but just poncing about in it in the house makes me feel great.

Every single person that's seen it has been dying to put it on straight away and then do Scottish widows/Dracula or similar impressions and always end up with big smiles on their faces. Worth £50 just to see 60 + grumpy family members pretend they're Harry Potter.
