For women, I'm thinking ballet or whatever that hula hoop one is. Men - swimming?

Bodyweight exercises can be extremely effective Elizabeth, and of course have the advantage of being possible without any equipment (though if you do fancy getting a piece of kit for home/travel, the TRX, which utilises bodyweight, is amazing) but you need to do more to get the same effect as heavy weights in terms of building muscle. As snowdown says though, it's better to do what you enjoy because that is what you are more likely to do consistently and consistency is the most important thing of all Smile.

I have discovered running and changed my pear shape dramatically to a svelt and lean looking, cellulite free derrière and leaner thighs. It's taken me years to come to this as I used to trudge around the gym 3 X a week and it did now't for me. Diets worked but made my "pear" more pear shaped as I always lost weight from the top half first (the arse/thighs clung on).

I feel great and everyone I know has noticed. I do it 6 days a week. 45 min session.

Eliza22 · 11/01/2014 18:41

Oh, also do hatha stretching Yoga once a week.

AngieM2 · 11/01/2014 22:05

For me, after years of cardio in the gym....body pump has changed my body shape and tone more than I ever could have wished for.

For men, swimming! Dayum Grin

This thread makes me want to get fit Hmm

Helltotheno · 12/01/2014 11:49

I thought it was more testosterone less oestrogen in menopause? Would oestrogen supplements help I wonder?

I admire Jessica's body but would rather be squishier but still toned. For example, I have a 'booty' and where before I wanted it to be as small as possible, now I'm happy there's something to grab on to but want it toned!

Swimming tends to bulk the shoulders but I love it for the abs. Pilates also amazing.

In men, football bods win hands down imo, followed by tennis bods...

Sleepwhenidie · 12/01/2014 12:23

Both testosterone and oestrogen decline in women from about 40 onwards hello. As I understand it, it is the drop in testosterone that relates to muscle decline. I'm not sure what effect HRT might have on it all....

Wow Eliza, very impressive. How did you get into running?

Just did the Couch25k podcast thingy. Now, it's easy. I choose the week I want to do, depending on how much alcohol I've downed the night before Grin must cut down on the Prosecco

I'd also like to try ballet but already have very muscly calves. I think I'll choose to believe it just means I'll be good at it Grin.

MarshaBrady · 12/01/2014 18:51

Genetics is a big part of it. And also agree we might gravitate to exercise that complements our shape. Especially if it means we'll be better at it.

MinkBernardLundy · 12/01/2014 19:02

Hammer throwing Grin if done properly.

Ballet dancers dance beautifully but walk like ducks.

MinkBernardLundy · 12/01/2014 19:11

Trx I do at the gym but just looked up the price!! £150 for some straps and it doesn't even include the mount.

Seriously though I think cross training between weights and cardio. mixing it up a bit so it doesn't get boring and going with the things that complement your natural strengths. e.g. I cannot run so I hillwalk.

StrawberryMoose · 12/01/2014 19:27

I always have a giggle when people say yoga is all about relaxing and lying down. They've clearly never been to a class. One of my fittest, sportiest friends said that until she came along to my Ashtanga class. Said it was the hardest thing she has done.
