Would you wear 80s clothes?

When does out-of-date become retro, become vintage, become individualistic, become stylish, become fashionable again?

I wouldn't (am not the right sort of edgy) but my SIL does on occasion and pulls it off with aplomb.

MrsLettuce · 06/01/2014 12:43

Actually I now realise I do have a fab red 80's-does-50's dress that I love. It doesn't scream 80's though - has no print / wild shoulder pads or the like.

Trills · 06/01/2014 12:47

Depends.

Actual clothes from the actual 80s?

Or new clothes that are slightly 80s-style, but done in a 2010s kind of way?

Retro-style clothes are never exactly the same. The fabrics and cuts are different.

I think you are out of date anyway - the teenagers/younger women I see in very "fashion-y" clothes these days seem to be referencing the early-mid 90s rather than the 80s.

stella69x · 06/01/2014 12:54

I'm wearing leg earners with just about everything including work dresses, as it is so blooming cold.

stella69x · 06/01/2014 12:54

Warmers not earnersConfused

MrsPeacockDidIt · 06/01/2014 16:10

I just bought a bright blue batwing top which reminded me very much of one I had in the mid 80's

My figure now won't take the skinny skinny stone washed denim though so I'll draw the line there

MrsPeacockDidIt · 06/01/2014 16:10

I've also been looking at leg warmers as I'm wearing a lot of ankle boots and need a little something extra.

ILoveAFullFridge · 06/01/2014 16:26

I found a load of my old clothes from late 80s-early 90s at my parents' house. Some casual stuff, but mostly my old work clothes.

High-waisted, narrow-legged jeans (but I don't like the baggy-thighed style); a dark, swishy, intricately-patterned tea-dress that I loved (and still do); some smart, double-breasted work shirts with wrap-around waists; skirts, some pencil some long and swirly; long-sleeved t-shirts with slightly bat-winged sleeves; and some other stuff.

No fluorescent socks!

Wondering whether to take the shoulder-pads out and wear them.

I found an old barely worn fluffy (possibly mohair?) jumper in a charity shop a couple of months back. Cut out the shoulder pads and have worn it a few times.

ILoveAFullFridge · 07/01/2014 15:48

Today I am wearing a 25yo Banana Republic long-sleeve T.

ilove your stash sounds awesome!

Starballbunny · 07/01/2014 15:54

Since I lived in black leggings and ankle boots or skinny jeans tucked into long boots in the '80s and often still do, I'm not sure what sort of clothes the OP means?

I wouldn't wear leg warmers, I didn't then and I haven't got the legs for my Ra Ra skirt.

Starballbunny · 07/01/2014 15:57

DD2 grumps if I put on too long and swishier skirt.

My party skirt is black and spiral cut, which I guess is a more tailored take on my long full student ones.

ILoveAFullFridge · 08/01/2014 08:33

Today I am wearing a polo-neck (mid to late 90s) with a wool waistcoat (late 80s) and straight not-quite-skinny jeans (modern). Liking the look, but hoping I don't look like an older woman who has never moved on from the fashions of her youth!

I was only a kid in the 80s but when I think back to what I wore it was brightly coloured Benetton jumpers and pepe jeans Grin

Starballbunny · 08/01/2014 09:57

I could never afford a Benetton jumper and my jeans came from the market.

I lived in rural Wales, the visiting weekly market (lots of lovely brummie Asians) was the only fashion we had, without traveling 50-80 miles.

HelloBoys · 08/01/2014 10:00

Vintage I would do yes. Haven't really got nice 80s vintage bits apart from mohair jumper that I think is 70s but could be 80s.

did buy some vintage trendy sweatshirts said to be 80s with various slogans (sparkly think kids of Fame look) a few years back in Spitalfields market.

got leg warmers but not worn for ages and I think moths got to the posh pink cashmere £40 jobs! eek!

MrsSippie · 08/01/2014 10:10

Don't think I ever stopped Blush

tethersend · 08/01/2014 10:25

I wear loads of vintage clothes and jewellery, but it's all late sixties and seventies.

The hipsters are now wearing vintage 90s stuff Shock

So 80s is a bit passé Grin

HelloBoys · 08/01/2014 10:39

tethers - I think mine is too. but mine is SE London shop and she gets them from California. the owner did say Florence off Florence and the Machine went to her shop (Vien Vintage).

which is nice but some stuff bright.

IsItMyArseOrMyElbow · 08/01/2014 11:04

I think I may still be wearing the same pop socks I had in the 80s

Rosencrantz · 08/01/2014 11:49

People don't seriously wear leg warmers now do they? You know, without irony or as fancy dress?

SugarHut · 08/01/2014 12:41

If it fits well, and looks pretty, and not old and knackered, then wear it!

I hate it when people try and pass of "worn out and past it's best" with vintage though. If things suit you, and are in good condition, then you should go for it. You can always mix older pieces with your 80s stuff?

Flangeofmingetown · 08/01/2014 12:58

EEEEEEK! The eighties were hideous.

Step away.

nilbyname · 08/01/2014 12:58

I have loads of leg warmed that I wear with boots and jeans. Mmmm toasty!
