Would you wear 80s clothes?

When does out-of-date become retro, become vintage, become individualistic, become stylish, become fashionable again?

I would never wear it, being old enough to have worn it unironically the first time.

ErrolTheDragon · 08/01/2014 19:58

Vintage 90s? Don't be so silly. That's just some of my old favourites. Grin

johnworf · 08/01/2014 21:10

I wore them in the 80's. Why would I want to wear them again??! Wink

Metebelis3 · 09/01/2014 07:10

I have clothes from the 80s (and from the 90s) that I still wear. Not a huge number, but some.

KatnipEvergreen · 09/01/2014 12:10

The 1990s is as vintage now as the 1960s were in the 1980s.

Aintnobodylovesnanbetter · 09/01/2014 12:10

I still do Wink

bettybleep · 09/01/2014 12:29

I've just bought some leg warmers.. I don't know what to do now...
The trouble is, when you get to a certain age, everything has been in fashion at some stage. I used to do the 'not if you've worn it once' thing, but now I do the 'if I liked it then' thing.. Within reason, of course

GideonKipper · 09/01/2014 12:33

I am very jealous of all of you who can still fit into your old clothes. I seem to be gaining a stone and a bit every decade Blush.

Not to mention the vanity sizing issue. You must be skinnier now than you were then.

Jaffacakesallround · 09/01/2014 13:01

I didn't think the 80s was a particularly fashion-era in any distinctive way. I was working full time in a career for half the 80s, then a full time mum for the 2nd half of them. The only thing that I recall is shoulder pads in dresses.

BlueChampagne · 09/01/2014 13:05

Hear hear Errol

er no...they're the same clothes regardless of what size the label says!

GideonKipper · 09/01/2014 14:03

Yes you're right, got myself a bit mixed up there. If they fitted you back then and you've stayed the same size they'll still fit. D'oh. Grin

I was preoccupied thinking about having clothes in the 80s which were a 14, and being able to fit into some 14s now but being about three stone heavier Confused.

JamJarShop · 09/01/2014 14:54

We have found memories of 80's clothing, but wouldn't want to wear it now.

My father still sports a 70's hairdo. I dont know if he expects it to come back into fashion, but its skipping the grey phase and turning white O_o

morethanpotatoprints · 09/01/2014 15:08

Strapless dresses with netting underneath aka Pepsi and Shirley, I loved these. My rara skirts were well worn too.
I think I was the only one who liked puff balls too. Grin

ILoveAFullFridge · 09/01/2014 15:40

Re vanity sizing, I'm a comfortable 14 right now. My 80s/90s vintage stuff is size 16. And some of that is very snug.

But, if I may be quite smug, it's not that I still fit it, it's that I fit it again. I have nearly lost the baby-weight. Said baby currently 13yo and weighing 5.5st! Grin. I don't really want to spend on clothes until I've shifted that final 1/2st, so finding this stash has been very pleasing.

Are turtle necks from the 80's ? I've been wearing them for 3 years yes, I don't buy clothes all the time and I have been told they are not fashionable anymore not sure if they ever were fashionable

All I wanted was to be warm and not to carry a scarf with me Grin

ComposHat · 09/01/2014 16:58

Top tip for any bald men: do not wear a beige polo necked jumper. Especially if you have a florid complexion.

From a distance the upper part of your body will resemble a giant penis.

maudpringle · 09/01/2014 17:08

I remember wearing a "Frankie says relax" t shirt, stonewash jeans, pixie boots and a donkey jacket during the mid 80's. That look aint never comin' back!!!

Merguez · 09/01/2014 18:58

Er, what is vintage '90s style?

I still have some clothes I still wear that are at least 15 years old. Do they count? Not particularly stylish though ...

violetwellies · 09/01/2014 21:46

I still wear quite a lot of 80's stuff, but nothing that was actually in fashion then. Laura Ashley tweed coat, flying jacket, men's jumpers (handknit) that type of thing.

Squiffyagain · 10/01/2014 05:42

I think you should only be allowed to wear 80s jeans if you tie a scarf round one of the knees.

GobblersKnob · 10/01/2014 11:27

I am wearing leg warmers Grin

AND tie dye leggings, I have no shame Wink

survivingthechildren · 10/01/2014 11:38

Forget that - you lot can still fit into your 80's wardrobes?? Envy

Lagoonablue · 10/01/2014 11:39

In the 80s I wore vintage 60s stuff though! Later I lived in501s and DMs. Lived in Manchester all through the rave/Indie thing and wore flares, baggy t shirts and Adidas classic trainers.

I can't imagine wearing that lot again. Though I tend to live in jeans, hoodies and converse when not at work so do look a bit 90s!

Smart stuff for me came from Next. Lots of double breasted jackets and shirts, long skirts, wrap around cardies.
