Non frilly, non revolting, not too pricey christening gowns?

My 8mo DTs (two girls) are being christened in a few weeks. All I can find are truly revoltingly loo roll cover style dresses.

Ideally I want sleeves as it will be winter and I don't want them to get too cold, although I have shawls to bundle them in. I absolutely adore the monsoon christening gown but there is no way I can justify £100 per dress on something they will only wear for one day. I've checked out bridesmaid and flower girl dresses but they're way too OTT.

I just want something plain, elegant and simple - it doesn't even need to be pure white, ivory or cream is fine - that I don't have to pay a fortune for! Any ideas?

I used www.poshtotsonline.co.uk/
They have some super expensive stuff but some bits are more reasonably priced.

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 04/01/2014 08:02

Check on eBay. You might be in luck and find something similar to the Monsoon dress.

Wheels79 · 04/01/2014 08:04

That should be www.poshtotsonline.co.uk/

CollectorofCookbooks · 04/01/2014 08:04

eBay isn't bringing anything up at the mo, will keep checking

Will look at Posh Tots, they didn't have anything before Christmas but something might have come in since, thanks for reminding me

Ooh! Completely different to the monsoon gown but really like this - what do you think - much more practical too?

I bought a white dress from monsoon (unhelpful) but it was actually reduced in the sale when I went to purchase it. Ds wore a suit rather than a traditional christening dress.

Disclaimer, dd was 8 months, ds had just turned 2yrs.

This is really pretty, only £16, but you would need a cardigan

I got this one www.chateaudesable.co.uk/4938819/products/christening_winter_gown.aspx for my dd. It is a really lovely dress and warm enough on its own with a long sleeve vest underneath. I feel your pain though, its a nightmare.to find something plain and simple.

Mikkii · 04/01/2014 08:25

John Lewis usually have suitable things, but nothing showing on their website. Perhaps in store?

HandragsNGladbags · 04/01/2014 08:28

I bought a christening dress and a shrug from Next which was long but rated rather than frilly.

dozily · 04/01/2014 08:36

I prefer the Emile et Rose one to the Monsoon one personally, and there are some other lovely suggestions above. Personally I prefer a fairly simple white dress rather than a traditional christening gown.Dd1 & Dd2 wore a cotton broderie anglaise dress and looked lovely but it's harder to find that kind of thing in the winter.

dozily · 04/01/2014 08:41

How about something like <a class="break-all" href="https://m.mamasandpapas.com/product.php?sku=s0010605&fromsite=www.mamasandpapas.com/product-broderie-anglaise-dress-welcome-to-the-world/s0010605/type-s/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">this with a cardigan?

CollectorofCookbooks · 04/01/2014 18:59

Wow thanks! Went out for the day and came back to lots of suggestions. Loads to check out with DH.

Much appreciated!

White Company but will need a cardy or long sleeved body suit

Paintingrainbowskies · 04/01/2014 19:55

My daughter was christened in this;

m.debenhams.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/prod_10701_10001_248020825380_-1

Mainly because we had a vintage shawl handed down so I wasn't too bothered about the gown!

I really liked it.

AHardDaysWrite · 04/01/2014 20:04

Try your local indoor market. There's often a baby clothes stall. Both my local markets have gorgeous christening gowns for about £30.

CollectorofCookbooks · 04/01/2014 20:53

Good idea to try the market, sadly the cost of turning my wedding dress into a pair of dresses is prohibitive - the quotes I've had to do that and mend the hem of my dress so I can wear it again are more than the two monsoon gowns!

I like all of the above, time for some serious thinking and decision making. Thank you so much!

Not on the Highs Street.

HavingAnOffDAy · 04/01/2014 22:15

We had a gorgeous cotton, Victorian style dress for DD when she was baptised.

Similar to this but long sleeved.

I was lucky enough to find one for sale at a craft fair, but perhaps you could get them made?

Her christening was in October & she wore a plain white babygro underneath & then changed into a less formal dress for the mel afterwards

nicky2512 · 04/01/2014 22:21

Rosebud and lace trim christening dress on Next website is beautiful though still quite expensive at £60. Sorry I don't know how to link.
