Sheepskin gilets - yeah or nay?

WillPenn · 01/01/2014 19:26

Am considering purchasing a gilet similar to this one (of real sheepskin)

here

but can't quite make up my mind whether they are stylish or old ladyish (am 41 so not quite an old lady yet...). Opinions welcome!

it's one of the nicer ones I've seen. I don't like them myself and they just don't suit me and my body shape but if you like it and it'll work with the kind of things you wear then you should go for it. I don't think it's especially old ladyish, I've seen plenty of pretty young things wearing ones very similar

Volume121 · 01/01/2014 19:58

I don't think they are old-ladyish but I don't personally like them

ShreddedHoops · 01/01/2014 20:00

I think they look old ladyish on most people most of the time I'm afraid. Love faux fur ones though.

dexter73 · 01/01/2014 20:03

I think it is lovely.

bunnymother · 01/01/2014 20:04

It's lovely, but I think I would prefer a jacket.

burnishedsilver · 01/01/2014 20:15

I like it. I'd wear it.

eshermummy · 01/01/2014 20:18

I've got a black sheepskin gilet. Not old-lady-ish at all imo but I do struggle to get much wear out of it, even though I love it.

WillPenn · 01/01/2014 20:18

Do people think the faux fur ones are better then?

Am not sure they really go with what I've got in my wardrobe, which is the other thing that is stopping me. Mind you this faux one is quite nice?

I wear mine quite often around the house as an extra layer. I love wearing it as it's so cosy. Mine is navy & I think it's quite versatile.

MarshaBrady · 01/01/2014 20:23

I'd choose a jacket, although it's ok.

FiscalCliffRocksThisTown · 01/01/2014 20:24

I wear mine mainly indoors, to keep warm!

It is a toscana one, bliss

eshermummy · 01/01/2014 20:28

I have a sheepskin coat aswell but it has to be sub-zero temps to wear. It's seriously warm.

WillPenn · 01/01/2014 20:28

Are the real ones super warm, then? We live in quite a cold house in a cold part of the country and so it might actually be worth me buying one if they are very cosy.

I prefer the faux one (mmm might get one too, that is exactly what I've been looking for!)
The real sheepskin one is a mumsy

FiscalCliffRocksThisTown · 01/01/2014 20:30

I got this one. 5 yrs ago

Still going strong and vastly superior to the. Celtic one ? I ordered both to compare!).

The Celtic one is almost 5 inches shorter ( too short on me but am 6ft) and not as luxurious.

eshermummy · 01/01/2014 20:30

Mine Toscana also - very warm and cosy. I have a couple of other fur gilets too but the toscana by far the warmest.

Upcycled · 01/01/2014 20:31

I like it but I think you need to have a certain style to wear it well.
I tried one and couldn't make it work but will probably try again when I have enough money to buy nice clothes and shoes.

alwaysrunninginheels · 01/01/2014 20:34

I have just bought this one in the sale. Husband hates it. I love it! Can see me wearing it loads.

Willpenn- I have an ancient real one and it's seriously toasty. But v unflattering so only worn in my house. Can see why the sheep are warm though.

WillPenn · 01/01/2014 20:37

Thanks for the link, Fiscal - that one does look very nice. I think I'll have to get saving and buy a good one next winter. I'm not such a fan of the faux ones and do need something warm to see me through the winters.

Hopefully I can carry it off style-wise!

That is a great bargain, always - I like it alot but it wouldn't suit me as boobs are too big to add so much extra fur too! My DH also not keen on them, but then he doesn't like much I wear...(which is his problem not mine!)

OP posts:
FiscalCliffRocksThisTown · 01/01/2014 20:41

I think it can look glam/boho ( kids self)

DH says cave woman, or sexy 70's earth mother goddess...

Depending on his mood.

It is the sort of item if clothing that lasts a lifetime.

The softness and warmth is utterly divine, and no dynthetic sweatiness!

I like the grey one linked from donaida too! Love that styke with skinny jeans!

WillPenn · 01/01/2014 20:56

Definitely glam/boho. Only 70s hippie if worn with flares and platforms. I don't think cave women had gilets - just sheepskin bras and skirts, right?!

No. 1000 times no.
