Sheepskin gilets - yeah or nay?

WillPenn · 01/01/2014 19:26

Am considering purchasing a gilet similar to this one (of real sheepskin)

here

but can't quite make up my mind whether they are stylish or old ladyish (am 41 so not quite an old lady yet...). Opinions welcome!

That Pyrus one is beautiful!

WillPenn · 01/01/2014 22:09

Why sugarhut?

I like, but it would end up covered in toddler yoghurt, so might not last a lifetime

SugarHut · 01/01/2014 22:50

Only clicked on your first link, the purple one is god awful and looks like it cost £19.99 from a market stall Grin imho of course.

Second one, the tartan affair is much better, more tailored, a lot more stylish.

I have huge boobs, gilets should never, ever be worn. One of the most unflattering things to our shape.

fedup21 · 01/01/2014 22:56

I think they look terrible unless you are slim-you are in danger of looking too Michelin man like otherwise!

FiscalCliffRocksThisTown · 01/01/2014 23:05

I certainly don't look michelin man like! It's not a big downy puffa, it is nicely shaped furry one.

So no, I would not go clubbing in it.

But as a glam country woman's attire ( well, yes) eminently suitable! And a bit glam, very warm and cosy, and think what you save on heating bills!!!

Curioustiger · 01/01/2014 23:09

Sorry not for me. A bit sienna miller circa 2005. There's nothing as dated as an item from the last decade. It hasn't had sufficient time to come back into fashion!

Curioustiger · 01/01/2014 23:11

Oh god but now I feel duty bound to post but if you like it buy it, it looks warm etc etc etc. but I still dot like them myself!

Curioustiger · 01/01/2014 23:11

Don't like them. Not dot like them. Oh I really must think before I post!

SugarHut · 01/01/2014 23:22

Sienna Miller circa 2005. Yes yes to this. And they even made her look like she might smell a little fusty.

I'm very slim (sz6) and have a large bust. You need to be waify to even think about one of these. I had one once, til I saw myself in a photo. I looked like a toffee apple, boobs made it hang like I had a mammoth torso, with tiny legs poking from beneath. Embarrassingly comical. They're just not chic in any way. Sorry OP.

PoshPaula · 01/01/2014 23:26

I like the faux fur filets you've linked to. I'd wear one.

MrsCampbellBlack · 02/01/2014 07:18

I like them. The Iris & Ink one that Eshermummy has is gorgeous.

But you need to try a lot on to find the exact right shape for you. And if you're wearing with a cashmere jumper, some skinnies and ankle boots - I don't think you need to worry too much about looking like a reject from 2005 Wink

Lambzig · 02/01/2014 12:14

I have the Brora one and love it (although I am not wearing it much at the moment to avoid baby snot/vomit). It can glam up an outfit quite nicely, but you need to pick a colour that's going to go with your tops.

I can't do faux anything, so it had to be my Christmas and birthday present.

Twinklestein · 02/01/2014 12:34

Personally I think they're a classic, I couldn't care less what Sienna Miller was doing in 2005. Some things have a moment and then become a staple.

I have several faux and real, and I wear them constantly through the winter as I really feel the cold.

I don't like the ones with the fur on the outside so much, & those are less flattering.

It's true that they look better if you're thin, but that applies to most clothes...

WillPenn · 02/01/2014 14:31

Back again - thanks for the comments. Taking it all on board - especially the comments from the big of boob. I'm going to sleep on it - perhaps see if there is anything good in the sales.

But I would be wearing it with cashmere jumper/skinnies/ankle boots, MrsCampbellBlack - this was the exact combo I had in my head!

I'd agree with if you MUST, do it with skinnies and then knee high boots, over the skinnies. But there are much more flattering (and less has been) things you can substitute with. What is it you're after from this gilet? Do you want a jacket type thing? Or is it something fur, and a bit glam?

WillPenn · 03/01/2014 10:25

Sugarhut, I want something a bit glam and very warm that I can just throw on. Also would be wearing it around the house alot - often I'm cold with 2 cardies on in the evening and thought the sheepskin might do the trick in keeping me warm.

I'm not sure, though, that fur gilets are hasbeen? A lot of leading designers seem to make them as part of their collection. BTW, I was not proposing to buy the purple one that I linked to - that was the colour that comes up. I'd buy black or dark brown.

Willpenn i think they are a classsic item. They aren't a "now" item. Joseph etc make pretty much the same one winter after winter. So not high fashion but so what. But to help stay warm have you tried the heat tech ultra warm tops underneath jumpers. I'm shocked at how warm they are. Not related to your gilet question i know......they have a couple of styles.
