I'm at my wits end with DDs(6) waist length that's wavy, fine in texture but loads of it.It tangles so easily and can be horrendous to comb out after washing.I always condition and use a good detangeling spray. I guess I still haven't found the right products so any suggestions would be really welcome. Any price point really as I've just tried Kerastase which was OK but brought her out in spots. Many thanks.

A tangle teaser hair brush. I find it life changing on my tangly hair, love it!

Marylou2 · 15/12/2013 19:43

Thankyou but I have a tangle teaser, good wide toothed comb, mason pearson hairbrush. Maybe I'm looking for a magic potion that doesn't exist.

I was about to say a tangle teaser too.
It's a cheapy condtioner but have you tried Herbal essences one? it's the one in the blue bottle, it might be Hawaiian coconut or something?
That and the tangle teaser sorts out my dd's hair.
Might be worth a whirl for a couple of quid.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 15/12/2013 19:48

Pixie crop?

PrammyMammy · 15/12/2013 19:48

I'm watching this one too.
I wash dd hair with the blue herbal essence because that's what I use and kids shampoo doesn't work on her hair, it makes it dry and tangled.
I condition it and brush it while the conditioner is in. I then spray it with a pink Avon detangle spray and use the tangle teaser. I let it dry naturally, because it's so fine it doesn't take long, and it always looks really nice, the curls are not messy at that point BUT as soon as we hit the elements it is wild. Like a scarecrow. A nightmare to brush/tie back/do anything with.

addictedtosugar · 15/12/2013 19:53

Comb through before the conditioner is rinsed out, air dry if you can, then brush again, starting near the bottom, and moving up a few inches when the bottom in knot free, keep going til you reach the top - seems to stop the really big knots forming.

Marylou2 · 15/12/2013 20:13

I will definitely try combing the conditioner through. No chance of a pixie crop DH and DF would kill me. Her hair is truly gorgeous when it's done but so time consuming.

We use Aussie 5 minute miracle - plus a tangle teezer. Works wonders where other products have failed.

Butterytoast · 15/12/2013 20:21

I have super thick curly hair and the only thing that works for me is the tangle teaser and Aussie 5 min miracle conditioner..

TeWiSavesTheDay · 15/12/2013 20:23

Have you tried not brushing it? Bear with me!

Wash it in the morning, little bit of shampoo, lots of conditioner, lightly towel dry then run through it with your fingers to sort the parting. Let it air dry.

It's taken me 20 years to stop brushing my fine hair and it looks so much better, honestly and I never ever get knots. When I brushed it the knots would get so bad my mum cut them out. If it's a windy day or I'm going to be really active I tie it up and that's enough to counteract any hair all over the place potential for knots.

I don't brush the DCs hair either.

Marylou2 · 15/12/2013 20:23

I'll pop to Boots in my lunch hour and grab some 5 minute miracle.Got to be worth a go! Thanks.

I say wash it in the morning just because it gives it more time to dry but dcs if often done in the evening, so will do two low plaits to stop any sleeping on not completely dry hair issues.

Marylou2 · 15/12/2013 20:26

Interesting thought on the not brushing. I think it would just form a massive hairball the size of a football and have to be cut off.I reall couldn't take the chance but so glad it works for youSmile .

Brush her hair before you wash it - gets lots of looser hairs out (that would otherwise knot).

Shampoo, without piling the hair on top of the head (does that make sense?)

Conditioner on - comb through using fingers, then wide tooth comb, then normal comb (then fine tooth comb if you have the energy).

Rinse conditioner out.

Air dry if possible and brush through when dry.

I had long, thick, wavy hair which was a total pain to wash/brush. My mum used to plait it every night so it didn't get tangled overnight, then brush it through in the morning and replait/pony tail for school. This reduced the number of tangles, but even so it was awful having it washed. I still wash my hair like this now, it's become such a habit!

British curlies

Really useful website

CMOTDibbler · 15/12/2013 20:30

DH and DF can brush it then. And I speak as someone who has had bum length hair - it takes a lot of looking after to be nice that 6 year olds don't have. Cut to shoulder length it will look nicer and save a lot of grief

Charcoalbriquettes · 15/12/2013 20:31

So tewi, you wash your kids hair at night, air dry, ok, plait to keep it tangle free at night.... How do you make it look smart again in the morning without brushing it?

thanksamillion · 15/12/2013 20:33

I use the Avon stuff (but the mango one not the princess pink one) and it's revolutionised our mornings Grin

Also our default is that her DDs hair is plaited which fortunately is normal for girls here (I live abroad). She only has it down for special occasions and if I can't be bothered to plait it

Marylou2 · 15/12/2013 20:37

Ooh loving the website! A whole curly community, who knew. I know waist length hair is a pain as mine's quite long too but totally different in texture and very straight.

OP posts:
TeWiSavesTheDay · 15/12/2013 20:38

I just run my fingers through it.

If it's ended up looking a bit random i'll tie or plaits it back up again but usually fine. Tbf, it's not bum length - shoulder length. Mine's a bit longer.

TeWiSavesTheDay · 15/12/2013 20:42

I am convinced that brushing breaks the natural clumps or curls iykwim, and causes the knots because the hair isn't sitting naturally.

I do comb it properly if I'm doing a knit check, but otherwise - no combing. I got the idea from my sister whose hair is very curly but fine, and cut out brushing to stop frizz and it works really well on wavy haired DCs.

gruffalosmile · 15/12/2013 20:44

My DD has long thick wavy hair - it;s gorgeous but a pain! We find a tangle tamer hairbrush way better than a tangle teazer, it looks just like a normal hairbrush but has really good bristles that go through the tangles, I bought it from a local chemists shop. Second the advice about brushing before washing too.

elspethmcgillicuddy · 15/12/2013 20:49

I second not brushing. I have very curly hair and made this mistake for years. I only wash it about once a week and use baby shampoo. The rest of the time I wet it, put conditioner on it, run my fingers through it and let it dry in the air with the conditioner still on it.

Please give up the mason Pearson brush! I was known as 'the hair' at school because no one let my DM know this! I was asked to play both a sheep and a bush in consecutive school plays....

elspethmcgillicuddy · 15/12/2013 20:52

Oh and to sort it in the morning... Get a plant spray and wet it again until is damp. A touch of conditioner and run fingers through and let it air dry.

Marylou2 · 15/12/2013 20:59

Tangle tamer hairbrush ordered from Amazon(I know they don't pay their taxes but my life would fall apart without them!)
Elspeth, I'm ROFLing at the sheep and the bush business. Poor you!
