Down filled coats - is it normal for feathers to come out

Dancergirl · 03/12/2013 19:32

I've got Boden's Stockholm coat that I bought last year.

The feathers are EVERYWHERE! All over the lining and all over my black cardigan and other clothes. I'm getting sick of having to pick them off everything.

Does this normally happen with this type of coat?

It hasn't happened with any of mine. What a pain! Contact Boden?

FracturedViewOfLife · 03/12/2013 19:38

I haven't had any feather escape my Fat Face one. I would contact them.

BikeRunSki · 03/12/2013 19:40

It depends a great deal on the quality of the down ( how much expensive tiny fluffy eider goose feather to how much cheap, spiky duck feathers), the robustness of the fabric the cost is made of and the standard of the stitching. I have owned several down jackets and sleeping bags , all mountaineering brands, and I would say that some feather leakage - a few feathers occasionally - is normal, particularly after a few years, but all over everywhere is not.

I can't say much about fashion down, but for a mountaineering brand if it were less than £150-£200 full price, it is likely to be the cheaper, spiky down that escapes easily.

Don't Boden have a no quibble returns policy though?

Dancergirl · 03/12/2013 19:47

It wasnt cheap!

Not sure they'd return it after a year though....

This years version is £179!

If it is faulty let them know, even if they only offer you a 50% refund it's better than nothing.

Dancergirl · 03/12/2013 21:24

Yes I'll call them tomorrow.

Although if I return it I'll need a replacement, any ideas? I like the Boden one as its very warm but not too bulky.

Are Uniqlo any good?

My sister who has a Uniqlo shop near her says they are a bit shiney. I have had a Gap one for about 3 years and its never shed and I've just bought another. Super warm and you can wait for a 30% discount to buy.

Yes shiny is not good! I'll have a look in Gap, thanks.

BikeRunSki · 03/12/2013 22:58

Great price if you are not Medium

bunnymother · 03/12/2013 23:01

The Uniqlo ones feel too light, too.

Dancergirl · 04/12/2013 09:48

Zara ones any good?

carrie74 · 04/12/2013 10:42

I've had down coats from Mango, Gap and now Aigle, and I don't think I've ever seen a feather come out.

FairPhyllis · 04/12/2013 11:06

The odd feather now and then is normal, but lots like you're describing isnt.

Hermione123 · 04/12/2013 11:22

I returned that Boden Stockholm coat last year for exactly that issue and got a full refund, it she'd so many feathers it was unwearable. Ime a few feathers over time but that one was poor quality

glowgirl · 04/12/2013 11:25

At first maybe one or two but no more than that.

Dancergirl · 04/12/2013 12:34

Thanks. I spoke to Boden today who are sending me a free returns label for me to send to their faulty goods department. I hope they give me a full refund.

I bought a fairly inexpensive one from TK Maxx last year which shed feathers after a while, but the worst part was that when it go wet it had a horrible smell. For that reason I have replaced it this year with one from Aigle. What I didn't realise at first was that mine had no fur round the hood. When I checked with the store I discovered that the fur on these is real, raccoon apparently and the store has a no fur policy so had ordered a batch without fur.

whitewineandchocolate · 04/12/2013 17:17

Thank you so much for this thread, I have a Stockholm coat here and was trying to decide whether or not to keep it. Based on your comments it's going back in the morning. Mine may be fine, but too expensive to risk.

Dancergirl · 04/12/2013 17:35

white is yours this year's version with the belt? Mine was from last year. Maybe this year's are better...?

OP posts:
whitewineandchocolate · 04/12/2013 17:46

It is this years and seems ok but I wouldn't have thought the design would have changed that much, just a bit risky but good that they were helpful to you on the phone.

bigTillyMintspie · 04/12/2013 17:49

Dancergirl, I have a Boden anorak that leeches feathers. I got it last year and have worn it loads. Had you worn yours a lot?

bigTillyMintspie · 04/12/2013 17:51

Just checked my account and it was an Aspen jacket bought just over a year ago. I guess that's too long ago!
