Caroline Hirons. Am I the only person that really does NOT rate her advice?

No sunscreen every day? And never over SPF 20 ever???

No red meat or dairy?

You only get what you pay for with skincare and you need to be spending £40.00 - £60.00 if you want a decent cleanser???? Shock

Really???

I'm sorry, but that's just rubbish. Liz Earle Cleanse and Polish and Avene Extremely Gentle cleanser are two of the best at only £12.00 each. And as for no sunscreen...

This woman is not a dermatologist. She's a 'beautician' who's worked in the industry for a long time (and clearly has a lot of contacts.) She has no medical qualifications as far as I know and some of her advice would have a decent derm tearing their hair out.

I think CH's blog is good in that it encourages us to be aware of ingredients are in our skincare, she won't recommend anything with mineral oil for example.

I do think she pushes people towards using too many products in a day, and too much in the way of acids. I like a bit less stuff on my face. And the idea you should be spending the same on skincare as you would on shoes or a handbag is just plain daft.

womma · 25/11/2013 14:53

I think she gets a lot of stick about her appearance. She has the temerity to work in the beauty industry and not look like a stick insect. Good for her.

Joan Collins has had a fuck load of plastic surgery so that's why she looks the way she does.

BeCool · 25/11/2013 15:12

She is not somebody I would wish to take dietary or beauty advice from.
Er, then don't. It's really quite simple.

I think you've misunderstood her re sunscreen though. She says not to buy expensive moisturisers/day creams with SPF in it - as you will be paying well over the odds for SPF while the moisturising aspect is degraded. So spend all your ££ on the actual face cream and apply the SPF separately, or with your foundation.

There isn't actually much point is applying over 20 SPF sunscreen anyway as it will have worn off/been sweated off before it can give that amount of protection. Thinking you can apply SPF50 in the morning and be protected from the sun on a hot afternoon will probably get you burnt. Apply 20 in the morning, and if you are going outside in the afternoon to be in the sun, apply it again. This is sensible relevant advice.

Her face massage rocks & has sorted out my sinus condition where all else failed.

I've found her to be quite informative and useful. There is no way I will ever use as many products as she mentions. That doesn't mean I think she is rubbish.

Of course everyone can only give an opinion, and her's is based on her experience. I don't think any advice will ever be one size fits all.

As for her not being a dermatologist - like we are all seeking skincare advice from dermatologists? Sorry but that really made me scoff!

squoosh · 25/11/2013 15:13

Caroline Hirons talks about how she broke out with adult acne once she hit 40, she's not skinny and apparently some people don't like the way she looks. Goodness, how dare she claim to have any knowledge of skin care. Hmm

Some products work well for some people and not at all for others, I happen to love the Clarins exfoliating toner. There is no guru out there who's every recommendation will work for everyone.

BeCool · 25/11/2013 15:23

Actually the only time in my adult life when I was blackhead/acne free was when I was on a vegan diet so my experience shows (to me) a dairy/meat link.

some strong links between milk and acne talked about here The thing about linking diet and acne (or anything else) is just because scientific studies don't prove it outright, doesn't mean it doesn't happen. It just means they haven't PROVED that is happens - yet.

cauliwauli · 25/11/2013 15:23

Wish I hadn't clicked on that gurugossip link - what a mean-spirited bunch on that thread!
Shock

lurkingaround · 25/11/2013 15:25

There is more and more evidence linking dairy, (if you must have dairy do not use skimmed milk, as CH advises, if you are prone to acne) sugar (even fruit sugars) and nuts to acne.
No, you can't prevent ageing, but you can prevent sundamage which is probably about 80% of skin aging.
SPF 20 is not enough, no matter how often applied.
Take a Vit D supplement, they are well absorbed for the most part.
I think if you have a skin issue, go to a dermatologist.

squoosh · 25/11/2013 15:26

The gurugossip thread is really spiteful.

goodasitgets · 25/11/2013 15:26

I don't use the mega expensive stuff she recommends

Am routine is Occo liquid cleanser and a hydrating toner plus a cream she tweeted had nice ingredients (it was £4.20)

Pm routine is Occo wax cleanser + flannel then md formulation cleanser, bravura exfoliating toner, serozinc and same cream as am

My skin is absolutely glowing

BeCool · 25/11/2013 15:28

I really don't think Joan Collins looks "great" for 80.
I think she looks a little sad and desperate really. And in total fear of aging.

Gosh is she really heralded as some kind of 'guru'?

jasmine1979 · 25/11/2013 17:17

Maybe also good to remember that Caroline isn’t giving out this information out of the goodness of her heart? Many of these self styles “gurus” are earning 6 figure sums or more from their blogs, videos etc, not to mention the constant stream of free products they sent to promote. (whilst often neglecting to mention the sponsorship they have with said item or company. All those young girls you can see on youtube talking about their favourite products are often earning big bucks from it.

They all help each other as well. The blogging beauty community is very tight. Caroline has become popular through word of mouth. Bigger bloggers with large followers like Tanya Burr, Viviannadoesmakeup, EssieButton etc all hailed Caroline as the queen of skincare and suddenly she was everywhere. No questions asked.

Companies nowadays are realising the huge effect that a bloggers rec can have on their sales. They know that if Hirons suggests a cream is good, there is every chance it will sell out and fast. It wouldn’t surprise me if there are very big kickbacks for her in that...

I like reading Caroline Hirons' blog. I like that she tells you what she was sent as a PR sample, and she tells you also about products she buys herself.

As with all things in life, if you wouldn't rush out to buy it because it'd been recommended in Red magazine, then you don't necessarily have to buy it on a blogger's recommendation.

I think what persuades a lot of readers to buy the products she has recommended is quite often the comments from blog readers who have bought said products and find it works for them too.

It works the same way as the MN style & beauty pages - something gets recommended on here and it suddenly becomes a cult buy because of other word of mouth recommendations.

valiumredhead · 26/11/2013 13:46

I've heard of her but only googled due to this thread.

Refreshing to see someone who isn't a stick in the industry. She is beautiful imo. To say she is in shocking physical condition is a slight exaggeration to say the least.

My mum is vit d deficient even with a 6 week holiday in the sun, and plenty of fresh air and sun in this country. She doesn't wear sunscreen or make up on her face which I suppose is a good job. it was only picked up when doing tests for something else so I suspect there are plenty of people with deficiencies who don't realise. I don't wear sunscreen on my face,I stay out of the sun and wear a hat. I'm very careful though as there's skin cancer in our family.

Wrt Joan Collins-if you saw her in rl you might not think she looks that great. She wears 3 inches of make up and a wig and has had surgery. She wears make up that will look good in photos so is inches deep.

The best cream I have ever used for my problematic skin is a fiver, so Caroline is very wrong about needing to spend shed loads for a good cream, in fact its the more pricey ones that are crap for my skin ime.

Yes. They are looking to shake this up in the uk regarding the law with bloggers having to say when they have a relationship with brands. (it could be said if you accept items for free then you are certainly having a relationship with a company.
cybher.com/12/2013/11/blog-disclosure-asa-clarify-rules/
I will say I do think Caroline is one of the more honest bloggers in admitting that she is given items for free. Whether she is then paid extra to promote a particular product over others I don't know though. Many bloggers are certainly not saying when they are sent products and hide this by telling about some and not others.

I just watched this youtube video with Caroline, and sorry but the idea of spending a £300 cream on my face regularly just seems crazy. I understand what she is saying about investing in your face, but surely most people would have different priorities with that amount of money!

Choccheesecake · 13/01/2014 14:03

I'm vitamin D deficient. Came up in a blood test. Was surprised because I had just come back from a beach holiday. Doctor said very hard to get all you need from diet alone and she is seeing more and more people with this because they wear too much sunscreen (obv protection IS important but not all the time and watch what factor you have. That's advice from GP)

I read Caroline's blog and have bought a few things on her recommendation. Most of them were around the £20 mark. I have sensitive skin but they have all been great for me. I like her style
