oil pulling - I'm swallowing!

DunderMifflin · 23/11/2013 09:12

I've been oil pulling for a few weeks and my teeth and mouth definitely feel nicer - I haven't been able to find a good way of disposing of the oil so I've decided to swallow. Apart from the ick factor, its only what's already been in my mouth and coconut oil must be nutritious.

Also I can trick myself into thinking I've had a bounty in the morning!

If I develop aggressive thrush, carbuncles or balloon in weight, I'll report back.

My research into oil pulling consists of a quick google 30 seconds ago but the first link I opened said not to swallow due to the toxins that have been pulled out. It said to spit it into the toilet.

ZenOfPetals · 23/11/2013 09:20

I have bought the oil, and keep meaning to do it, but I have to have coffee in the morning ASAP, so cannot spare 20 minutes to do the oil pilling. Does anyone think it would work after coffee?

GobblersKnob · 23/11/2013 09:22

The first rule of oil pulling is do not swallow! I think you need a re-think.

valiumredhead · 23/11/2013 09:26

God, yuck! You don't swallow, it's full of all the crap you've just swished round your mouthConfused Envy

valiumredhead · 23/11/2013 09:27

Zen,I do it whenever I remember, never first thing and usually only for about 5 mins.

valiumredhead · 23/11/2013 09:28

OP-you just spit out in the bin, practically every article written says that.

DunderMifflin · 23/11/2013 10:03

But if I wasn't doing it, the 'crap' would be in my mouth anyway?!

It's too liquid to spit in the bin and it blocks sinks, toilets, etc

I'm not really doing it for toxins removal (what is that anyway?) - as I said,I'll report any adverse effects.

OP posts:
valiumredhead · 23/11/2013 12:59

Of course it's not too liquid to spit out on the binConfused

Do you swallow mouth wash too?

Blerk!

DunderMifflin · 23/11/2013 13:40

It's like water - I wouldn't put that in the bin.

I don't swallow mouthwash because it would taste horrible.

OP posts:
trixymalixy · 23/11/2013 13:44

Surely the whole point is that you don't swallow it Hmm

I wouldn't spit it down the sink (easily blockable old pipes) or in the bin either, but I'd spit into some kitchen roll and then bin.

NoArmaniNoPunani · 23/11/2013 13:44

You swallow saliva and that's full of bacteria. It all gets killed by stomach acid. The bacteria in your mouth is only a problem if you have gum disease and it enters the bloodstream via the gums

YoureBeingASillyBilly · 23/11/2013 13:47

Spit into a tissue then put into bin

AmberLeaf · 23/11/2013 13:55

Definitely don't swallow.

Just spit it into an empty yogurt pot/tin or something then bin it.

My son blocked up the sink by spitting it into there!

DunderMifflin · 23/11/2013 13:58

I have a healthy mouth so as NANP says, I'm not swallowing any bacteria I wouldn't be normally.

I can't believe oil pulling has been properly tested and so all the sites that say 'don't swallow' are just repeating the others or going down the unproven 'it contains toxins' line.

OP posts:
NoArmaniNoPunani · 23/11/2013 14:09

Why don't you just brush and floss? Oil pulling is a load of unproven shite

AmberLeaf · 23/11/2013 14:09

People have been oil pulling for a very long time, long before us westerners copped onto to the idea via the internet.

The people that have been doing this for a long time advise not swallowing, I think they are the experts. But you can do what you like.

DunderMifflin · 23/11/2013 14:32

Ha ha - the two ends of oil pulling opinions!

I can't get on with flossing, like oil pulling and the visible improvements to my teeth/mouth.

I can't see how swallowing coconut oil is going to be either a major benefit or disadvantage and, to me, its much more convenient than spitting it out. I find the thought of soggy tissues in the bin a bit ick - different icks for different folks and all that.

OP posts:
NoArmaniNoPunani · 23/11/2013 14:36

I've got a patient who replaced flossing with oil pulling. She now has gum disease. She didn't tell me what had changed at first. It really is unproven shite. If you can't get on with ordinary floss try tepes or flosspicks - benefits of them are backed up by lots of clinical evidence.

DunderMifflin · 23/11/2013 14:39

I do like the sound of the floss pick - is that the water one?

OP posts:
IslaValargeone · 23/11/2013 14:40

I'm not quite sure how you can compare mouthwash and oil?
Coconut oil for example is solid before it gets swooshed and 'pulled' then after 20 minutes in your gob it is very liquidy.
Mouthwash is supposed to go down the sink.

TJH1 · 23/11/2013 14:41

Eh? Can't stand the thought of soggy tissues in a bin but you are prepared to swallow that stuff? How inconvenient can it really be just to spit into a tissue? Put it in a plastic bag if you must.

NoArmaniNoPunani · 23/11/2013 14:53

flosspick

palemistyveil · 23/11/2013 14:56

Wouldn't swallowing the coconut oil have a laxative effect?

mogontheblock · 23/11/2013 14:58

(LITERALLY have NO idea what this is thread is about but there seems to be a lot of focus on spitting or swallowing?!)
Shock

IslaValargeone · 23/11/2013 14:59

Armani do you think the hi tech water ones are any good?
I quite fancy one.
