oil pulling - I'm swallowing!

DunderMifflin · 23/11/2013 09:12

I've been oil pulling for a few weeks and my teeth and mouth definitely feel nicer - I haven't been able to find a good way of disposing of the oil so I've decided to swallow. Apart from the ick factor, its only what's already been in my mouth and coconut oil must be nutritious.

Also I can trick myself into thinking I've had a bounty in the morning!

If I develop aggressive thrush, carbuncles or balloon in weight, I'll report back.

Did you read mine? I hardly think Channel 4 is an authoritative source of clinical data.

I'm willing to believe that 'swishing' is the action responsible for the stain removal, but I'm not sure I could manage 20 minutes of Listerine. Coconut oil tastes nicer.

Mrsmorton · 24/11/2013 13:20

Oh and thesaurus, there is no evidence base to support oil pulling. My experience is that people are too idle to spend 20min doing that as well as correct brushing and flossing. Quite how that is a logic failure is beyond me.

AmberLeaf · 24/11/2013 13:50

But the experience you mentioned was of people who don't bother to brush and use mouthwash instead. Again, what does mouthwash have to do with coconut oil?

Anyone who gives oil pulling a try will no doubt have read up about it online, every article I've ever read says to brush and floss first and that flossing first is particularly important as it allows the oil to go between the teeth.

People that are 'too idle' to brush their teeth are probably not the people that are going out of their way to add to their oral hygiene regime IMO.

Mrsmorton · 24/11/2013 14:08

How many patients do you see a week amber? Do you have experience of the dental health of many socioeconomic groups?

AmberLeaf · 24/11/2013 14:35

You've avoided my question again

How many patients do I see a week? None, because I'm not a dentist nor have I claimed to be, or any sort of dental expert. This is a thread about oil pulling not dentistry. Oil pulling is what I am commenting on.

How many of your patients have told you about their oil pulling habits? Because you haven't yet said that any of them do it, just patients who don't bother to brush and use mouthwash instead, again what exactly does that have to do with oil pulling?

No one suggests that oil pulling is instead of brushing/flossing.

I don't doubt for a minute that you see many patients with poor oral hygiene. I do doubt that any of them do oil pulling. They are two separate issues.

BellaVita · 24/11/2013 14:38

I put a layer of toilet paper in the bathroom bin and spit onto that.

Mrsmorton · 24/11/2013 15:12

I probably have half a dozen patients who do oil pulling instead of any other OH regime, maybe ten who do it alongside brushing. HTH

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 24/11/2013 15:34

Eew,just eww!

Use water instead and spit it out.Coconut oil is not a magic ingredient!

AmberLeaf · 24/11/2013 15:45

Oil pullers who don't brush their teeth yet have regular dental checkups?

Thank you for finally sharing your experience of oil pullers over those who just use mouthwash though!

As said before, everything I have ever read tells you to do this alongside brushing and flossing. Your experience is not the norm or representative of oil pulling.

Nothing wrong with doubting the benefits, but doing it in the recommended way [alongside brushing etc] is not harmful.

Mrsmorton · 24/11/2013 16:05

You would be amazed at the number of people who think that the dentist is responsible for their oral health. "Oh my teeth a re bad because I couldn't find an NHS dentist" and that by going twice a year they have discharged their entire responsibility...

AmberLeaf · 24/11/2013 16:22

I can well believe that.

It isn't anything to do with oil pulling though.

JuneauWhoIAm · 24/11/2013 18:34

Did I mention listerine anywhere thesaurus or do you just see what you want to?
I mentioned WATER versus oil.

palemistyveil · 24/11/2013 18:49

I was boggling at how it could possibly be more lucrative for a dentist to have patients with healthy teeth than those who need work doing. NHS dentist!

Mrsmorton · 24/11/2013 18:54

If a patients just needs one small filling, it generates the same amount of income as someone who needs 10 fillings, four root canal treatments and an extraction. I can do a check up and filling in 15 minutes but ten fillings would take considerably longer so I could do 4x check up and fillings per hour or one grotty mouth in an hour.
Or six check ups in an hour, one grotty mouth will generate half of that income one root canal treatment can take two hours if it's complex or heavily infected. Two hours for the same income as 15minutes...?

Teastrucking · 05/11/2018 12:41

I’m doing the oil pull treatment now every morning for two days so far and I swallow. I figured that you may as well attack two things at once. The bacteria in your mouth and parasites in your guts. I’m going to do this treatment for a week and it does curb your appetite and will burn belly fat. To each it’s own. Your body is your own experiment right???
