Do you "set" your foundation with powder?

I have trouble with the staying power of foundation, especially when I'm in the office all day, have been told previously to set it with powder, but have never been able to find a good powder to do so. Now I've read/heard a couple of times recently that setting makeup with powder is a bit passe? Is this true??? Apparently powder makes your skin look old (have experienced this!) and causes photography issues. Do I just keep looking for a (better) anti-shine primer instead? Very confused!

Oh I'd like to know this too! I have the exact same problem.

Amrapaali · 15/11/2013 10:15

I DO set it with powder, but go about it the other way round. My foundation of choice is LilyLolo Mineral Powder. I do translucent powder first, then a swirl of the mineral foundation powder. The foundation stays put as there is another layer of product to hold on to and it doesnt look as chalky, if the trans. powder goes on first, IYSWIM.

But if you are using cream foundations, I dont know how this can work. Sorry Smile

I use Clinique's loose powder in invisible blend or Chanel les beiges. Only on the t zone, never around the eyes. I have to or I'm an oil slick after a few hrs!

BunnyLebowski · 15/11/2013 10:19

I use powder every day - without it my makeup is too shiny, doesn't last and doesn't look 'done'.

MAC Mineralize is one of my favourites. Not at all cakey or powdery.

There's a good Maybelline one (in black square box) as a cheaper alternative.

Vibbe · 15/11/2013 10:19

I do. I have oily skin, so I need powder in some areas to make it last longer. If there's no need for using powder all over the face, you don't have to.

I use either Guerlain Meteorites powder pearls, Nars Light Reflecting Loose Setting Powder - both are transparant, Guerlain's powders have a bit of shimmer to them, while the Nars one is more matte. Or I use a Mac Select Sheer pressed or loose powder.

HD powders tend to cause some flashback, but the powders I'm using shouldn't cause anything like that - I haven't noticed any problems.

I apply the powder with a brush, and I make sure to just use a tiny bit - it's hardly visible and doesn't make my skin look old.
For the loose powders (from Mac or Nars), I get a bit on the brush, then swirl the brush in the lid of the container, then apply.
For the Guerlain ones, I just swirl the brush in the powder pearls, then apply - as I find that you don't get much on the brush.
For pressed powders, I also use a brush and just get a small amount on the brush, then apply. I find that using the powder puffs give that old skin look.

Mac Mineralize Skinfinish Natural is amazing!

FunnysInLaJardin · 15/11/2013 10:23

yes, I use Lancome translucent loose powder over a Chanel tinted moisturiser. I always have tbh and don't think it makes me look older Confused

plentyofsoap · 15/11/2013 10:26

I use Mac powder also and apply with a brush, mainly on my t zone.

trainersandcake · 15/11/2013 10:27

Yes Yes to MAC Mineralize - I do my foundation, then load up a brush and kind of 'push' it into my face rather than swirl.

I had a makeup lesson for my wedding prep and she said if you swirl it, it just rubs off the foundation.

MrsDoomsPatterson · 15/11/2013 10:47

I apply with a velour puff using the press & roll method, brushes should only be used to knock excess off. There are some great tutorials out there, I've been converted & this method really makes a difference.

MrsDoomsPatterson · 15/11/2013 10:48

I see trainers is saying much the same!

Walnut8 · 15/11/2013 11:12

Interesting! My technique is definitely all wrong then! I can't use MAC MSF as it makes me break out and have yet to find a powder that doesnt wash me out (even if professionally matched) which I think might be related to the photo issue that has been mentioned (flashback??).
Or am I just using too much? Question for those that use loose translucent - do you need to reapply during the day? If so, doesnt this get messy?

I touch up with Chanel Les Beiges, (its a pressed powder). If you press & roll you more 'press' the powder into the skin, I feel it's the powder sitting on top of the foundation that gives the chalky look.

Walnut8 · 15/11/2013 12:29

I've just looked up the Chanel one MrsDooms, it seems to get some good reviews. Does it look good in photos?

Vibbe · 15/11/2013 12:41

I touch up with a pressed powder - usually Mac Select Sheer.
I wouldn't bring a loose powder with me - it's too messy and will go everywhere. You can get transparent pressed powders.

MrsDoomsPatterson · 15/11/2013 13:12

It's the best pressed powder I have ever used. Not heavy at all. I'm not sure about photos - I'm sure someone at Chanel would apply some & you could take a quick pic afterwards?

CointreauVersial · 15/11/2013 13:25

My foundation IS a powder - Elizabeth Arden Pure Finish. It's loose, but you grind a bit of powder at a time, so it isn't too messy.

squoosh · 15/11/2013 13:31

I use Nars Light Reflecting Loose Setting Powder, the best powder EVER. I doesn't look flat and cakey and it doesn't need touching up. Amazing stuff.

FracturedViewOfLife · 15/11/2013 13:41

I use NARS sheer glow foundation and NARS pressed powder in some places.

I do have the big NARS loose powder but I don't use it much.

PicnicPie · 15/11/2013 13:43

I use Bobbi Brown Sheer Finish pressed powder. It is so light and holds all my make up in place and gets rid of that awful shininess. I found before I started using powder that my make up wouldn't wear off my early afternoon. Can't live without powder now.

PicnicPie · 15/11/2013 13:43

*would wear off

Thants · 15/11/2013 13:44

I use primer, cc cream and then powder. If I don't use powder the foundation just slides and smears off. I have oily skin. I use 17 mattifying powder. I like to be really matte because my skin is so shiny!

Rattitude · 15/11/2013 19:05
explains the 'press and roll' method, Walnut.
biryani · 15/11/2013 19:09

Yes, otherwise foundation would disappear. I use Maybelline mousse (quite light) and Rimmel loose powder (very light) on top.

Have you tried a powder foundation?

Pinupgirl · 15/11/2013 19:31

Yes I use a pressed powder every day as I like a matte look. I use Soap and Glory one heck of a blot-its great and sets my make up in place the whole day.
