Quick, help, wise MNetters! Can I wear this dress for a wedding?

Picture is on my profile. It's knee length and very much cream, not white. Planning on wearing it with black tights and flats. Or is it too 'bridal'? I have sod all to wear, wedding is this weekend and I can't justify buying anything new.

Any opinions very much appreciated.

Your profile is private. But from the description, no.

Heathcliff27 · 05/11/2013 09:55

No, not cream, white , off white or any colour close to what the bride will be wearing. Also, cream dress and black tights??? Noooooo

Theoldhag · 05/11/2013 09:57

Cream dress sounds fine, can be accessorised with a different colour, but not with black tights!

AutumnStar · 05/11/2013 10:06

Does it work now? Eek, I'll reconsider the black tights then. Thought they would dress it down a bit.

No I wouldn't wear that, too bridal IMO

AutumnStar · 05/11/2013 10:10

Hmm. I thought as much. Back to rummaging desperately through the wardrobe the drawing board.

It works now.

No way would I wear that to a wedding unless it was mine

SthingMustBeScaringThemAway · 05/11/2013 10:11

But it's transparent and lacy.Shock Don't you like the bride?

It's a lovely dress but you would have to dye it......

SthingMustBeScaringThemAway · 05/11/2013 10:12

X-ed!

AutumnStar · 05/11/2013 10:13

Sthing, it has a slip under it but it's not on the hanger. Possibly should have mentioned that! Grin

Sunnysummer · 05/11/2013 10:13

If you absolutely must, then maybe with a coloured shawl or cardigan? Agree that black tights are a no no.

Otherwise, do you have anything else, or a friend to borrow from?

Lots of recent threads have concluded that the bride probably won't care, but lots of guests will be sniffy and gossipy...

Theoldhag · 05/11/2013 10:15

Ah it's very lacy and rather bridal Sad, could you die it a couple of shades darker? Or maybe you could ask the bride as to her thoughts on it?

It is very pretty though!

OzzieMozzie · 05/11/2013 10:15

Do you have a brightly coloured slip?

SthingMustBeScaringThemAway · 05/11/2013 10:15

Still no good - sorry.

Tell us everything you have (except jeggings..) I'm sure the combined power of Mnet can create you an outfit.

SthingMustBeScaringThemAway · 05/11/2013 10:20

Also - what size and shape are you? Some of usHmm might have a beautiful but mistaken frock just waiting to be taken to a wedding...

LaRegina · 05/11/2013 10:22

No definitely not - looks bridal to me. And when you do next wear it, go with bare legs or nude tights Smile

What other dresses do you have - and if the answer is 'none' do you have a TKMaxx near you? They have really cheap weddingy stuff Smile

AutumnStar · 05/11/2013 10:22

No coloured slip, Ozzie but that would have been a very good idea.

That dress is a very impractical purchase but I loved it when I saw it! I need to be invited to a fancy Christmas party.

Sthing, I have quite a lot of dresses but they're all very summery. I have a turquoise floaty one but no nice cardigans to wear it with and blue one with thick straps. Same problem though. Wish it was warmer!

AutumnStar · 05/11/2013 10:24

Sthing, I'm a size 10/12 and hourglassish but smaller on the top.

That's gorgeous!

Not sure what all the grief about black tights is about. Black opaques with a long-sleeved cream dress and red lipstick looks incredibly chic. Friend wore something very similar to mutual friends wedding, wore a chain-link black patent shoulder bag to set it off. Fabulous but discreet, don't think anyone commented negatively.

That said, her dress was a little less lacy and bridal - I do think that this is a tad on the 'ethereal' side so I probably wouldn't go for it myself.

Do you have a Christmas do to go to? If you have to get something new try to get something that you could wear for both events.

TheHeadlessLadyofCannock · 05/11/2013 10:37

Oh please give it a rest with the 'colours you can't wear to a wedding' stuff! It is not the eighteenth century.

I think it looks nice, OP. And black tights with it will look chic and modern.

AutumnStar · 05/11/2013 10:38

It is very Kate Bush, Peony. Grin

I think I'll have to take myself off to TKMaxx one evening this week - good suggestion!

my husbands colleagues girlfriend wore a cream lacy dress to my wedding,i didnt even notice tbh,i only noticed afterwards on the photos,it doesnt bother me at all but then im not a traditionalist and i dont take offence easily.

SthingMustBeScaringThemAway · 05/11/2013 10:47

You can wear a summer dress. Do you have one that's particularly flattering? It need not be "dressy" - something simple will do.

Then you need a suitable coat / shrug / wrap whatever. (Why would you want to wear a cardigan to a wedding) Perhaps something you have but haven't considered?

Or do you have a work suit? Tights, shoes, bag, gloves etc could make it more festive.

If you can borrow anything make it fur(ry) or velvet in jewel colours....

AutumnStar · 05/11/2013 10:53

Thanks Headless. I do love it but don't want to attract any sniffy looks.

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 05/11/2013 10:53

Have you got a blazer you can wear with your other dresses?Or could you borrow something?

That dress is lovely but no way for a wedding and decor not with black tights unless you are tall and willowy with long light flowing locks and a pair of bright shoes!
