Uniqlo down coats?

So my North Face is on it's last legs and I really don't have the budget for another. Was looking at the uniqlo down one. Does anyone have one? Is it warm, will it get me through winter comfortably? Also what is sizing like, I'm a 14.

I got this coat a couple of years ago. In white, (mad I know!). It has been great. It does get dirty, but washes very well. Very light and warm.

bundaberg · 03/11/2013 19:37

i have one.
last year was great. not quite as warm as i'd hoped. but it was pretty good.

I've washed it once, followed the instructions, but this year it leaks terribly through all the seams :(
really disappointed.

in fact, I think i might email them

s0 my advice is steer clear

Ohwhatwitcheryisthis · 03/11/2013 19:46

I got one. Don't think it's going to be warm enough alone, but with fleece or heat tech should be ok. I have a great fat arse generous hips and got the largest. should be fine for 14. The hoods are huge and blow off. I'd get the no hood one and a hat.

Loopyloulu · 03/11/2013 21:09

I've got one and it's lovely and warm. The only thing I don't like is the colour- brown but looks purply in day light. Great price/value.

I bought it last winter as was desperate and only colour left.

I'd go for a medium- I got small and I'm a 10.

Haven't washed it yet bt you have to avoid bio stuff i think to keep it showerproof.

LordPalmerston · 03/11/2013 21:10

quite shiny

try lands end

OhTheDrama · 03/11/2013 21:17

Hmmm not too sure now! £90 is a big chunk of our budget for it not to work out. Can't spend anymore than £100 and starting to get desperate as the school runs are starting to get a bit chilly.

I have one. Just washed on a 30 degree wash (30 minute cycle) and it's ruined. Any tips welcome... Guess the 30 on the label meant 30 degree hand wash...

Loopyloulu · 04/11/2013 08:10

How is it ruined? If that's the case you are entitled to a refund under consumer law- it's not fit for purpose after 1 wash. Contact them.

Wildwaterfalls · 04/11/2013 08:25

Hmm interesting. All of the down is now in little clumps so I have a thin empty coat with little balls in it, if you see what I mean...

Marylou2 · 04/11/2013 08:41

I have loads of stuff from Uniqlo but not one of these. Can't recommend LandsEnd down fill coats enough though. They are fab.If you search for a good offer code you should be able to get one on budget.

bundaberg · 04/11/2013 08:51

Will that happened to mine too. I did manage to shake it out, but like I say it was never quite the sane and it now leaks.
I used non-bio but tbh it isn't the waterproofing on it that has been affected...Its leaking through all of the seams.

Snowlike · 04/11/2013 09:14

To dry your down coat properly you need to put it in the tumble drier with some tennis balls and dry it well beyond the feel dry stage.

I have a Uniqlo down coat and a north face arctic parka - the uniqlo just can't compare for warmth, it's supposed to have the same down fill - which is why I bought it but for me and I am someone who is always cold, it's an autumn/spring coat and during winter I cling to my North Face like someone possessed!

Blackduck · 04/11/2013 09:15

Landsend currently have 25% off (today is the last day) so would come in under 100....

Loopyloulu · 04/11/2013 10:56

Yes you are supposed to gentle tumble dry them to shake the down about!

Loopyloulu · 04/11/2013 10:58

bunda- they aren't sold as waterproof coats- showerproof at best. If you want waterproof you need Gortex and tapes seams and something from an outdoor type store.

chartreuse · 04/11/2013 11:46

As others have said, Lands End are really, really good for coats. There is a discount today. I have a couple and the quality is second to none.

bundaberg · 04/11/2013 13:44

no, i know they're not sold as waterproof,

but i do expect to not get soaked through after a rain shower! i've never had a coat that has done this before!
and like I say, last year it was fine, didn't get wet once despite doing out in rain showers

OhTheDrama · 04/11/2013 14:46

Thanks everyone will have a browse at landsend later on.

I tried a down coat from Lands End. Sent it back as it was very thick and heavy.

I've got one of the Uniqlo down coats, bought it a month ago and I absolutely love it - it's very light and feels lovely to wear but probably not warm enough for the depths of winter in places where it will get bitterly cold.

HellonHeels · 04/11/2013 15:02

Looking back at the OP, I should add, the uniqlo coat is in no way a suitable replacement for an outdoors coat like a North Face garment. It's more a fashion coat - if you're looking for an all-weather type coat to wear out on the moors in the teeth of a blizzard or something, this isn't it - and the price reflects that!

Wildwaterfalls · 04/11/2013 15:30

Many thanks for the tips on drying my coat. Will try tonight. Thank goodness for mumsnet! Smile

bundaberg · 04/11/2013 16:12

Had an email from uniqlo saying that their coats should not be worn in the rain Hmm

So given that we're in the UK I'd advise against them

bunnymother · 04/11/2013 16:28

I have the Zara £109 down coat, and happily wore it with just a cotton top underneath, yesterday in the park. Maybe look at the Zara ones?

bunnymother · 04/11/2013 16:35

Here is mine, in the stores you can also get it in black: www.zara.com/uk/en/woman/coats/puffer-jacket-with-hood-c269183p1294059.html

paperlantern · 04/11/2013 16:50

marks and Spencers down coats are awesome, wash well, are waterproof and come in at less than £100.

perhaps not the most trendy. (let's face it though no down coat is) but they look very smart
