S&B newbie needs dress advice

I need a dress for DH's 40th birthday, drinks with friends in a nice cocktail bar, one of those speakeasy-type places. I'm a 12, 5'7", but a bit of a tummy, no waist to speak of. Will this dress be forgiving on my straight-up-and-down, (except side-on, from which angle I look about 4 months pg) 37 year old figure?
I'm thinking either black tights and courts, or tan tights and black shoe-boots (are they still in?) and poker straight hair.

Thoughts, stylish ones? Smile

Wee bump? Wink

Love that dress.

I'd go with black opaques and black shoes, large gold sleepers and wavy Farrah Fawcett style hair.

Stase · 01/11/2013 22:35

Gorgeous isn't it? But will that knotted detail be flattering on my less than flat belly?

Love the Farrah suggestion Grin

It's one of those things you'd have to try on I think. If the knot is in the right place, it could be very flattering, but if it's not, then it could ruin the look completely.

Have you ordered it?

tethersend · 01/11/2013 22:38

A thinking a sort of Studio 54 look...

Stase · 01/11/2013 22:50

I think you're right, it needs trying on. I think it's an ASOS exclusive, so I can't try it on in the shop, which means possibly paying unnecessary postage. Doesn't help that it actually looks big on the model, loads of room in the arms, etc, makes me wonder if I need to order a size up for best effect.

I don't go to cocktail bars often, but I think it's quite simple/classic/retro, so should be happy in the wardrobe for a while.

Yy, I love a bit of lurex.

Stase · 02/11/2013 09:09

Hang about - it also comes in a sort of gunmetal silver... Confused now! Confused

I've seen this style dress in the window of Ted Baker, last night in fact. If you can get to one you could try it on in a different colour (the one in the window was a reddy/pink colour) and see if it fits ok and then order the ASOS one.

Love the Studio 54 suggestion.

mammadiggingdeep · 02/11/2013 10:07

Oh wow!!!!! Love this!!!!!!!!

I think it'd be quite flattering on a little tum. Shoe boots would look cool.

Oooooh....you'll knock em dead!

Stase · 02/11/2013 10:20

Ooh, good call! Phoned the shop and they're holding it for me in two sizes until tomorrow. Going to have to either raid the join account or convince DH it's an early Christmas present...
Thanks for your help everyone. Smile

Just to update, if anyone's interested, I tried this dress on today, and it's not that flattering, definitely requires as waist! So not for me... The hunt continues! Grin

:( oh no..rubbish!
Good luck with the search!

Stase · 08/11/2013 20:11

Ok, I really need some help!
I've looked in all my local shops and had a browse online and can't find anything I like!

Is anyone up for helping? General guidelines are: suitable for a cocktail bar, good legs, no waist, bit of a belly, ok boobs, would rather cover the tops of my arms. Basically I'm what my sister calls 'mum-shaped' HmmGrin

Size 12 as long as its not a belted waist. I have a selection of foot-ruining shoes that would go with most things.

Anyone up for the challenge?

Love this

lace sleeves

Stase · 08/11/2013 21:08

Thank you. Love the second one, that's a good shape on me I reckon. Bit out of budget for what will be a one-wear-wonder I think. Is that a shift, would you say? Perhaps I need to search for that shape?

OP posts:
MrsNoodleHead · 08/11/2013 21:11

Classic cocktail dress but cool back

MrsNoodleHead · 08/11/2013 21:13

I love that second one too. The kind of dress you can feel comfortable in while showing off fab legs.

I don't think I'd call it a shift shape. But they are quite easy to spot when you've a series if dress pictures lined up. Will look.

MrsNoodleHead · 08/11/2013 21:51

No less expensive - sorry - but you could perhaps get more wear out of this one?

Stase · 08/11/2013 22:19

Oh dear, that's lovely! It is too expensive though. DH wants a new amp, which is going to cost about £500, and can't really prioritise my dress over his present.
As an aside, what's with the ubiquitous exposed zip these days? Can't wait til that trend passes...
Thanks for all your help. I have a clearer idea of what I'm looking for now, but it might have to come from Warehouse... Smile
