Is there such a thing as a chic/stylish winter hat?

All I can think of so far is a beret. My style is "gamine" if that means anything to anybody but what it does mean is that woolly bobble hats are out. Handy that, because I don't like them on me. But what is the alternative in deep midwinter? Coat wise I will be wearing something fitted and crombie-ish. Can you please share your hat thoughts?

Ooh tough one, for your style I'd say beret or cloche. No idea or where to look though, I look stupid in hats!

NigellasGuest · 18/10/2013 12:11

omg Cloche - help!!

or a wool hat in a more rigid style www.hm.com/gb/subdepartment/LADIES?Nr=4294966434#pageSize=MORE&Nr=4294924581

Are you young gamine or old gamine? A beanie looks fine with that sort of coat and can still work if you are older.

BOF · 18/10/2013 12:16

The knitted beret from that selection looks a nice shape.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 18/10/2013 12:20

That's a good point BOF. I'm finding it hard to imagine whether you're a young urchin type or a chic Audrey-esque version OP.

NigellasGuest · 18/10/2013 12:28

I'm an old Audrey

Hmm- it's more Joan Hickson than Audrey Hepburn, than one Grin

BOF · 18/10/2013 12:58

What about something a bit Dr Zhivago? I still think beanies and berets are more contemporary though. S

Ladyface · 18/10/2013 13:00

TK Maxx has some nice cloche hats if you are near one, I can't see them on the online shop though.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 18/10/2013 13:04

wah at Joan Hickson, get a cute cashmere beret and be done Grin

Pandsbear · 18/10/2013 13:31

Berets are all very well when it's mildly chilly. No use when it is properly freezing and your ears drop off...

NigellasGuest · 18/10/2013 13:36

would never have thought of Amazon, thanks sturdy

BOF thanks but no thanks! looks like a living creature on her head, so more Dr Dolittle than Zhivago... Grin
I agree about the knitted beret in the H&M link - I like the look of it but might not be able to do it justice. I'm leaning in the cloche/beret direction and may just settle for a beret although the Ted Baker cloche-type hat linked by LeoAndBoo is nice.
Fedora... no thanks, not on me although FAB on others..
Baker boy .... hmmmm...

just kidding Grin

NigellasGuest · 18/10/2013 13:37

actually Pandsbear you are absolutely right. If a beret is my only option however, could I conceal a sort of headwarmer thing under it I wonder

OP posts:
Slimchance · 18/10/2013 13:39

actually I quite like the waxed flying hats but not necessarily "stylish"

NigellasGuest · 18/10/2013 13:47

sturdy I'm loving how one of the keywords in your link is "bonnets".

now there IS a thought. Not very "gamine" however.

Ear muffs could be the way forward.

that's an excellent suggestion Ethelb. However I would worry that the jaunty erect pointy bit might flop in the winter snow.
