REALLY warm gloves?

cardamomginger · 17/10/2013 21:29

I have Raynauds and my hands hurt like hell when it is cold. I need REALLY warm gloves. Wool - no good. Cashmere - no good. Cashmere lined leather - no good. I don't want anything too bulky, because I still need to be able to do things with my hands when I have them on.

Any thoughts anyone? Thank you!

The fur lined gloves from Dents are super warm, not bulky, but not ethical: gloves

CeeceeBloomingdale · 18/10/2013 07:44

I have sheepskin mittens which are bulky but the only things that really work. They are leather not suede on the outside and I bought them years ago for well under £10 from a company who produces them, not a private sale so UGG isn't the only option. I also have Emu long leather mittens which aren't as warm but are a lot less bulky and better than my cashmere gloves.

Sheep skin gloves. I have Ugg gloves. Amazing!! Hands could not be more comfy.

Try Ugg or Celtic sheep skin. My pair is 3 years old and despite heavy usage look immaculate. I expect they'll last for decades.

cardamomginger · 18/10/2013 09:32

Thanks all. I'll look at sheepskin and with maybe some possum for milder weather (quite like the look of their socks too) and if it's really bad, maybe some silver ones as liners in the sheepskin.

Fellow Raynauds people - any thoughts about what you are going to do?

Celtic sheepskin mittens are fabulous. They also do them in child/teen sizes if you have mutantly small paws like me.

Mrspebble · 18/10/2013 09:38

I have the ugg gloves.. Only decent thing I own !! Present while on honeymoon. Soon as wintr came in foundation leaked on them so I got them cleaned. Now they are a bit tight!! They are lovely though.

cardamomginger · 18/10/2013 09:54

We're going to Florida next month and the discount mall we're visiting has an Ugg!

Doesnt help with needing to be able to use your hands much, but when we were in Lapland we realised that the Finns were right in insisting that mittens were a lot warmer than gloves, even taking liners into consideration. All the Finns wore mittens. Not a glove to be seen.

Snowlike · 18/10/2013 10:09

I'm planning on Leather gaucho gloves with a primaloft lining for driving. And then a mixture of sheepskin mittens worn with merino liners or for wet and cold ski gloves with merino liners. I have many glove options but my fingers still get very cold.

accessorizequeen · 18/10/2013 11:58

My mum has Reynauds. I don't think one pair of gloves will do it. She always has a liner pair, then fleece/wool lined leather on top. If the gloves are too stiff & you can't wiggle your fingers, they get cold too. My sister & I suffer less but we both wear 2 pairs on cold winter days. Thin wool gloves then we layer with those wool fingerless gloves with flap over mitten - accessorize & joules do them. Toasty in those & I can do stuff without taking them off, just fold the mitten back.

CMOTDibbler · 18/10/2013 12:07

I have a nerve pain problem in one hand that is incredibly sensitive to cold, and the muscles don't work in that arm below the elbow so my arm doesn't generate any heat either.

I wear layers - microfleece wrist warmers, silk glove liners, and down mittens. If its really cold, I put a hand warmer (love my HotRox chargeable one) inside the mitten.

ATM, I can get away with wristwarmers or woolly gloves, but will soon move to insulated fleece gloves with the silk underneath so I can take off the main gloves but not get cold

Marking place to read later

cardamomginger · 18/10/2013 12:33

Yikes, that sounds grim CMOT. Thanks for the tips. I've ordered the Raynauds silver gloves, which I intend to use as liners. I have a 3-year old, so need to be able to hold her hand when I'm wearing whatever it is I end up getting. So I'm not sure a mitten, even with a fold down bit to expose the fingers, is going to cut it.

Which brand of insulated fleece gloves do you wear?

Like the idea of putting one of those handwarmer thingies INSIDE a glove/mitten Genius!

You too, Olivia?

You can grip fine through a mitten - I wear them on my good hand too, and I can still do anything without fine grip.

The fleece gloves, shamefully I buy the ones from the garage! £2.99 or so. Not stylish, but v practical.

I'd forgotten that I also am rather partial to dh's Sealskinz insulated gloves which might be good for you. They are just very difficult for me to get on

Lands End do gloves with a zip pocket for a handwarmer. I originally did it as a very lovely Mumsnetter had special mittens made for me when I was wearing splints and couldn't get anything on, and she put the pocket in those.

You can get 40 pairs of Little Hotties handwarmers (which are hot for 8 hours) for £16 on Amazon. I keep the packets in the car/handbag/coat pockets and am popular at cold events for my spares!

cardamomginger · 18/10/2013 13:02

Fantastic - thanks so much CMOT.

You too, Olivia?

Not me - DH
He has previously had sheepskin lined leather but he does look slightly like an axe murderer Shock Grin as they are SO mahoosive.

cardamomginger · 18/10/2013 17:06

Olivia - Ha! (although not at the Raynaud's, which sucks)

For those who are even vaguely interested, I've bought the silver thingies from Raynaud's to use as liners and a pair of possum gloves for milder weather. I've dug out some sheepskin gloves which weren't quite cutting the mustard, but which may with the addition of the silver liners. If not, I've got my eye on some Sealskinz extreme weather gloves - one reviewer said that even though the leather on the palm when he was snowboarding, he was still toasty and dry. Also lusting after some gorgeous possum wrist warmers and I suspect I may weaken

Thank you everyone - I really appreciate all the ideas and help!

Did you order the possom gloves from the site linked to? The postage was showing as over £30!

QueenCadbury · 18/10/2013 17:59

I haven't had a chance to read all the replies yet although I will as a fellow raynauds sufferer. Last winter I wore silk liners, north face inner gloves and north face mittens and was still crying in pain!

CointreauVersial · 18/10/2013 23:04

Marking my place here too. Blue fingers all winter!

cardamomginger · 19/10/2013 12:01

buskers - no I found a site in the uk called kiwikate.
Don't have as wide a range, but still good and postage is £2.90 Smile Smile

I have seen these mittens at John Lewis. They are elegant and felt warm. Apparently, the PrimaLoft technology was developed for the US military to use in extreme weather conditions...

Some cheap-ish sheepskin mittens can be found here. HOWEVER, the advertised colours do not match the mittens that are sent, so I'd recommend that you liaise with the company before ordering anything from them. The quality is pretty good though.

duckyfuzz · 20/10/2013 16:32

Rattitude I tried those on yesterday, in the glove version, they are lovely and now on my Christmas list!

Rattitude · 21/10/2013 18:59

Ducky, I had not spotted the gloves in the shop but I have seen them on the website now. They look nice too.

I have noticed I forgot to include the link to the website selling cheap-ish sheepskin mittens in my earlier post. Here it is.
