Hairdresser has fucked up my"ombré" hair. What do I do now?!

AngryBeaver · 12/10/2013 03:17

I went in, asked for a quote ($160) then booked.

I was in there from 1pm until after 4.
I could see the colours weren't what I wanted at all. The top was far too dark and the bottom was like a muddy brown(with a hint of green)
It also doesn't blend like it should.

It's patchy, like a home dye job!

I usually don't like confrontation, but I was so miserable the whole time in there.

I'm pregnant, have morning sickness and bad back.
So to sit there all that time was really hard.
(Plus hairdresser STANK of fags, making me feel sick, and when I left I stank of them too!!..)

Anyway, I said I wasn't happy and she eventually said I could come back in on weds to have it corrected.
(Just the ends)

Then tried to charge me $300.

I told her what the other woman had charged and in the end (I was desperate to get out) I paid $220.

At 9 am this morning I had a call from the owner trying to get back the remainder of the money.
Telling me it was my fault for not asking agin how much it would be when I was in there for so long.

It got a bit heated.
I said "I am not a hairdresser! That is why people get quotes" etc

In the end she completely backed down and said I was right.

But now I have to go in on weds and face them!!

WWYD?

Oops sorry, quite long.

AngryBeaver · 12/10/2013 03:19

And here is no way she will give me any money back to have it fixed anywhere else, btw! No. Way.
We I've on an island. There is only the owner and the stinky fag woman that works there.
But it's a nice posh/modern salon.
I just bloody assumed they knew what ombré was!
(She said it was fairly new -not really- and there were different techniques)

rootypig · 12/10/2013 03:28

Ugh OP horrid. Where in the world are you? the $ is confusing me. Asking as it will be relevant to the advice people give you.

SavoyCabbage · 12/10/2013 04:35

So you got a quote of $160 then they tried to charge you nearly double? That's outrageous! Even if they hadn't screwed it up.

What would you like them to do? Do you them to fix it or do you not want to go back?

AngryBeaver · 12/10/2013 05:41

I live on an island in the Hauraki Gulf! Nearest city, Auckland. So NZD.

Well, I want it fixed, but I have serious doubts now regarding their capability!

I really can't afford to write this off and go elsewhere.
I'm expecting my 4 th baby and we've just bought a house!

Money is tight, and this was a treat :(
My hair doesn't even feel nice.
I've washed it today and it's still really dark on top, and muddy halfway down :( and a really crappy blend.

The owner was on for ages trying to get me to accept responsibility for her misquote!!

How the frig am I supposed to know how much they charge for 2 colours and not one!

What a miserable experience, AngryBeaver Sad. I would probably just cut my losses, spend the next few weeks doing regular conditioning treatments then do a home dye job.

I have a miserable hairdresser experience, if you want to hear it...

rootypig · 12/10/2013 06:24

You poor love. If you're not feeling up to the confrontation, can you get DH or someone else to go in for you and be very firm? they need to give you your money back, all of it.

mogontheblock · 12/10/2013 07:34

With rootypig here, get DH to go in kick off & get money back. Get yourself some lovely kerastase conditioning products & a decent home hair dye (I used them
for years & they were grand!) Get one that matches your natural colour as best as poss then maybe (?) try one of those home ombré kits? Think loreal do them, they look really good.
Meanwhile book yourself in a massage somewhere. You will feel better if you can your money back I'm sure. You poor thing hope it goes ok x

SundaySimmons · 12/10/2013 08:06

Personally, I wouldn't go back. I wouldn't want someone who stinks of fags touching my hair or standing so close to me for that length of time.

Can you get to the Ministry of Hair

Level 2
Heritage Hotel
35 Hobson Street
Auckland CBD.

kiwik · 12/10/2013 11:00

I agree with SundaySimmons - no way I'd be going back and letting someone smelly touch my hair.

I recommend Brad at French Revolver in Victoria St. (Opposite the TVNZ studios). I've been getting my hair done by him for years, from when he was at Vada off K Road. He is a marvel with hair.

AngryBeaver · 12/10/2013 21:07

Thanks ladies, spent most if yesterday in bed as felt so rubbish.
So definitely not up to confrontation.

The thing is, this is SUCH a small place, and we've only lived here since March.

I don't want to cause trouble here.

So I think I have to accept that t money is gone.

And decide whether to go back or not.

I'm booked in for 9 am so am hoping she won't have smoked by then!
Do you think it would be out if order if I asked her not to some whilst I was there??

I'm amazed the owner didn't say anything to her. She walked right past her and the whole salon soon stank! :(

rootypig · 13/10/2013 00:42

Oh honey I wouldn't go back. I understand you can't afford an appointment elsewhere but home dyes are so good these days, spend some money on a hair mask and use every few days in place of conditioner.

SundaySimmons · 13/10/2013 08:09

Your life is precious, why to back and spend time with someone who is not a very good hairdresser, stinks of carcinogens and the episode will cause you stress and upset which whilst you are pregnant are the last things you need to be feeling.

The money has gone, move on and don't ever go back. Unfortunately you will have to put this down as one of life's unpleasant experiences.

Thankfully, life is full of nicer things so do not dwell on this and hopefully find another hairdresser. Is it possible that their are mobile hairdressers where you live?

If s, talk to them, ask for pictures of their work. Do not commit to anything unless you are happy. They will be cheaper than a salon.

However, if you are that unhappy then go to a salon, albeit further away.

AngryBeaver · 13/10/2013 08:25

I think im just desperately hoping to have it improved!

I never do a good home dye job, it's always flipping' patchy. And, I'm nearly always allergic to them...my head always itches and gets tiny blisters!

Argh, what to do what to do!

I really can't stay like this? It looks so odd. Far too dark ontop for my complexion :(

OP posts:
SkodaLabia · 13/10/2013 08:32

Can you try one of those dye removing kits and then see what you're left with? I used one to remove dye that was too dark and it worked, although I did need to dye over the colour I was left with.

SundaySimmons · 13/10/2013 08:43

It sounds like it was too sophisticated for the hairdresser to achieve and that is why you have got a bad job. Sadly, instead of admitting her limitations, the hairdresser has gone ahead and tried to do it and failed.

If you go back, you run the risk of the bodged job being worsened and they do not sound very pleasant or customer friendly and it will end in confrontation and more bad feeling, not to mention your being very unhappy with your hair.

Must admit, I've never heard of ombre hair before and googled it and see that it is sported by sarah jessica parker and other celebrities who pay a fortune for their tresses so I presume that because the procedure looks quite natural it is actually quite complicated!

I don't think your hairdresser on a small island is familiar with the technique and asking her to repair the work she has already bodged is asking for more trouble.

OrchidLass · 13/10/2013 08:50

I really wouldn't go back there. I wouldn't trust them to get it right to be honest.

VivaLeThrustBadger · 13/10/2013 08:58

Wow, I have ombré hair and didnt realise how stylish I was. There was I just thinking I'd foot long roots after stopping highlighting. Grin

Beaver, can you get a friend or your dh to help you with a home dye? I wouldn't go back.

BooItTooJulia · 13/10/2013 09:04

If you have to go back and don't want confrontation, why not ask to have a conditioning treatment and either the colour stripped out or a single colour applied all over?

You can ask for your money back in a non confrontational way though. You could just say how disappointed you are, and that as professionals, they must be able to see that this is a disaster. They don't want you walking round as an advert for their salon, do they? If they gave you the money back you could get it fixed.....

Good luck OP.

roadwalker · 13/10/2013 09:09

what is ombre hair?

VivaLeThrustBadger · 13/10/2013 09:27

Lighter at the ends.

roadwalker · 13/10/2013 10:58

thank you

MissDD1971 · 13/10/2013 11:09

Sadly in a place like this BooToIt I think that that hair salon won't have THAT many customers hence charging so much money and being unwilling to take responsibility afterwards.

what about citizens advice bureau or Hairdressing Authority or whatever in NZ? what do they advise about situations like this especially bearing in mind it was a very expensive colour job onto your normal less money cut and blow dry?

You could ask for your money but I think the salon would just probably suggest to fix it for you and I know some salon owners (beauty in my case) can be very confrontational re money back. if the lady who owns it is aggressive and confrontational may be no hope.

suppose this is a bit of a warning re colour jobs.... sorry to hear you've experienced it OP.

MissDD1971 · 13/10/2013 11:12

OK - got legal hat on - have you got price list/website where they may say (here's hoping) that they don't do ombre or they do other colour jobs but don't mention ombre.

you could get them that way...

And IA - go in with DH AND plus above info and ask for your money back. guilt trip. maybe try to get half money back - say everything you told us re fags etc. kick up a stink. why SHOULD they keep a lot of money and give you a very botched job??!!! Shock

AngryBeaver · 14/10/2013 08:28

Thanks everyone.
Ha badger, I was only describing it as that the other day "it used to be called bad roots!"

I really don't feel I can cause I'll feeling in such a small place.
I am gutted, but I'll have to leave the money.

Lesson learned.

I will think i will ask them to just do an all over colour and hope that they sort it that way.

I won't ask them to improve ombre, they're obviously not up to it, and I can't risk anymore damage.
