herbaceous, I started running a year ago, having always absolutely loathed running - to my utter shock, I got totally hooked, and in fact still am. And I really am the least sporty woman imaginable. I love running now.

QueenQueenie · 12/10/2013 22:46

tell me more opm... how do I get hooked (and less purple)?

I tried the running thing but hated it....I really do need to do some exercise but as I leave for work at 6.40 and get back at 5.30 (at the earliest) it's fitting it in that's the problem!

bigTillyMint · 13/10/2013 08:33

BD, that is such a long day. Is that the downside to moving to a more countrified house?
DH cycles to and from work because it is the easiest way to fit in exercise - leaves about 7.20, back around 6. Could you fit anything in on your commute? Or at lunchtime (which is what friends who have lunchtimes do!)

Stropperella · 13/10/2013 08:55

BD, no wonder you're often knackered. That schedule would wipe me out.
Many, many thanks to MrsS, MI and BTM for your very kind offers of gin and company and I'm sorry I couldn't take you up on them. The course ran from 8.30 to 5.30 on Friday and Saturday and then I was on the train home by 6.30 last night. House is still standing and the livestock is still live. Phew.

Qq when i started running I not only turned purple but had an astonishingly loud ringing in the ears. Did wearboff, slowly.

Bd would shredding or callanetics be any good? You can listen to podcasts/radio while shredding, which makes it slightly less painful.

In other news, crepeys, i went to a mumsnet course on social media fir beginners because i know i'm particularly crepey in this area, and it was v good, would recommend.

addle, what did you learn on it? Was it about FB and Instagram and SnapChat, etc? Did you learn how to spy on DC?Wink

addle · 13/10/2013 10:03

FB and twitter mostly, BTM, and google + - most of it to do with professional stuff so v few spying tips. Is still swilling around in empty space between my ears but am determined to go through notes and get down to it. soon.

"How to spy on your DC" - why has MN Academy not thought of that? Could lead on to NVQs with MI5 and glorious new careers for us all.Smile.

I need lessons in Twitter...

Yes the move is part of it - I don't usually get a lunch break anymore (eat a la desk) and can't do anything on the commute. I need a new job (have just applied for one nearer home). - and if boss is going to leave as I suspect, I don't want to stay....

Glad to hear house still standing Stropps....

Evening all! Reporting back from my weekend "oop north".

The wedding went well - quite a small event but it was great to see all my slightly mad cousins (bride has seven siblings), DM, DB etc. There was a ghost present, however - cousin's first husband (who was DB's best friend and a lovely lovely man), who committed suicide a few years ago. Cousin's 16yo son gave a speech of such wit and confidence, telling his new stepdad how fantastic he is, how he loved to see his mum so happy after all the tough times; the bride then burst into tears of pride....well, there wasn't a dry eye in the house.

Then we were up early doors, and off to Alton Towers. I have to say, if you must go to a theme park while slightly hungover can I strongly suggest you go in the rain! There was absolutely no-one there, and thanks to my trusty Merrell Wakefield I stayed dry and cosy as we yomped from ride to ride. I must say, I do love a good rollercoaster thrill, especially when you don't have to queue.

I need to work on my "rollercoaster photo" pose though. God, it was like Halloween come early. Grin

QueenQueenie - I'm honestly not quite sure what happened. I was quite inspired by some other people I know who turned from being non-runners into runners. And when I got to the point where I could actually run for 20 minutes without stopping, I found I was on such an endorphin-fuelled high that it just did get really addictive.

I am currently working on couch to 5 metres. Going great!Grin

In other news we have a fox which is being attracted by the Pygmy goats that live next door . The blimmin fox is sitting in our garden eyeing their enclosure. Our poor kitties are hiding under the bed. Even when I turn on the exterior lighting it just sits there licking its paws .Confused brazenly.
Stropps do you have any anti- fox suggestions. ??[ thinking of your livestock experience]

Cv your weekend sounds brilliant. Hope you will share the roller coaster picGrin regardless

Cremo, we have foxes that will brazenly stare you out in our tiny back yard. One even went into my NDN's kitchen.

CV, you are a trooperFlowers

Pirate, I have never got into running on the roads (dodgy knees) I can, however, run for 20 or even 30 mins in the gym when I put my mind to it. It just makes me feel knackeredGrin

That is so lovely about the wedding speech.

And to lower the tone, BTM, I have the large Lakeland heated airer - is that what you have? It is .......big. But great.

I also find the financial investment in running makes one want to get one's value out of it Grin. The cliché about it being free...well, yes, once you've bought shoes (new pair clocked up on Sat), Restraining Undergarment (nuff said - have you seen the price of a shock absorber??) and anything else to accommodate/play the podcasts....I tell you, an old fraying swimsuit and a six-month swimming-pool membership is a damn sight cheaper.

I am also inspired by the fact I can do my bras up on smaller hooks.

I'm beginning to wonder if I should do the C25K thingo. I've always hhard running with a fierce passion - it makes my shoulders feel funny, gives me asthma and I can feel my flab wobble - but I do need to get fitter, and this seems the easiest way of doing it.

Tho I'd need v specialist footwear - I've got badly pronating feet. No doubt they would cost a buggering fortune.

Feeling rather fragile post pork lunch. There are 9 (nine, IX) empty wine bottles in evidence, plus beer bottles. I fear there might be more evidence already in the dustbin. The pork was bloody lovely, and the quince jelly a total hit, we got through a whole jar!

Off for my haircut soon. Had been fed up with the droopy ageing rock chick look, and wanted a change, but typically it's now lying all nicely, making me wonder if I'll keep it long and just put it up in interesting ways. Hmmm.

Crem, get a dog. And a shotgun. Grin
(I have the former, but not the latter)
When I was a teen and living far out in the country, I had a terrier not dissimilar to the one I have now and almost every morning he used to ask to be let out at 5.30 or 6 to go and chase the fox out of the garden (we had a big garden and no near neighbours), but when they both got old they weirdly made friends. The dog still used to ask to be let out early in the morning, but if you looked into the garden you would see them both sitting side by side on the lawn. And when the fox died, the dog found his body in the wood and lay down beside it and wouldn't come home for hours. True Story.

I have dodgy knees and a squiffy hip and lower back issues, so you won't ever catch me taking up running but I do walk briskly for around 40 mins each day with the dog and occasionally power walk up hills. Aside from that, my circuits class twice a week is all that I do. During the summer there is usually a certain amount of running incorporated into the circuits class, but it's on a field which doesn't jar all my ricketty bits.

The Lakeland heated airer is most excellent. I use it in our bedroom, so it is out of the way and no one falls over it.

CV, sounds like the wedding was lovely. I can categorically state that I will never be taking my dcs to Alton Towers or anywhere like it. I feel sick just looking at rollercoasters and will never go on one. Dd went to Eurodisney last year with a friend and they went on all sorts, so I don't think she has ended up deprived of excitement due to my weediness.
