Do you find that certain colours make you look more *polished/expensive*?

Tried on a toffee/caramel Whistles (and bought it) sweater today.

the salesgirl said it looked good with my highlighted natural colour dirty blonde hair.

certain tweed checks (the lighter spectrum) make me look naice and posh too. Like I've got money fat chance.

does anyone else find this or am I just being daft??

My exdp, and ds both tan really easily. They are both Winters.

miaowmix · 04/10/2013 20:39

Great tips, thanks. v tempted...

LaCerbiatta · 04/10/2013 21:13

Hmmm I don't really understand seasons but I would say that if you tan you're more likely to be winter than summer and if you suit cool colours as opposed to warm yellows and oranges then you're more likely to be winter than Autumn.

Annianni · 04/10/2013 21:24

I wore a lot of black when I was younger, and usually tanned.

Now I'm boring and pale, it looks awful next to my face. I look much better in navy and grey.

I have pale skin, dark brown hair and blue/grey eyes.
I'll have my colours done eventually.
I suspect I'm a Summer.

AnyFucker · 04/10/2013 21:28

I have no idea what "season" I am

but put me in toffee/cream/pale brown/caramel/soft grey colours I look great

put me in bright blue/orange/red/emerald green/yellow I look terrible

mrscog · 04/10/2013 21:31

I always find navy gives me a real lift and I feel great in it. Really want to get my colours 'done' but never enough ££ spare!

Gatekeeper · 04/10/2013 21:43

I look good in marl grey, coral, dusky/mulberry/raspberry pinks, soft brick red , sage and spring green . Dreadful in blue, mauves/purples, yellow, brown and black. Don't look good in cream or white either.

Skin is pale, freckled with ruddy cheeks, hair dark brown with reddish tones and grey eyes.
Fat arse Grin

SundaySimmons · 04/10/2013 22:26

I suit navy, grey, black, bright pink, royal blue, pale blue but I am not a natural looking person!

I have dyed hair which is probably six times darker than my natural colour, I am naturally fair but am usually tanned and I wear a full face of make up. I have blue grey eyes.

Therefore if I had my colours done would it be based on my natural looks or my artificial look I have created?

MissDD1971 · 04/10/2013 22:53

hmmm Sunday I don't know about that?!

don't they go on your natural skin complexion - e.g. how fair are you? sort of Celtic fair (very pale skin, freckles, burns easily etc?) for a start and maybe eye colours? from my recollection of the Color Me Beautiful book I had!

This gave ideas about how to dye hair IIRC and also had people with dyed hair.

Anyfucker, I think I must be your absolutely exact opposite, as I suit all the colours you said look terrible on you and vice versa.

Mostly, though, I just look great in black - and much less good in absolutely anything else! Anyone any idea what "season" that makes me??

Casmama · 04/10/2013 23:17

If you look gret in black you are probably winter.
When you are draped they will cover coloured hair and work eith your skin tone and eye colour.
I paid £99 to HOC and probably saved that in the next 3-4 months by not buying things that didn't suit me only to lie in the wardrobe.

blueshoes · 04/10/2013 23:59

Red is my colour. I light up like a disco ball.

scarlet76 · 05/10/2013 06:56

I think clours like camel, grey, navy and olive look far more polished on any wearer rather than very bright colours like pink, yellow or orange.

chickydoo · 05/10/2013 07:12

They are def some colours that look really obviously awful on me.
Pale peachy pink, pale beige ( yet darker versions of these colours look good) cream looks crap on me, yet white is ok.
Bright aqua is one of my best colours ( so I'm told) although I don't have much of it.
I do think over the years I have whittled out colours that don't look so good, although I have never had colours done.
Methinks there is something in it

Lavenderhoney · 05/10/2013 07:21

I have no idea, but I look dreadful in pastels ( they age me) and I look great in hot pinks, jewel colours.

If I want to look posh I have to look groomed as well. The right colours help, but hair done, nails, decent bag and shoes- well it's the whole picture isn't it?

Orangeanddemons · 05/10/2013 08:09

Chicks, you sound like a summer. I'm a summer and I tan really really easily. I thought one of the general rules of thumb was winters and summer tan easily, although winter less so

snowlie · 05/10/2013 08:42

Scarlet Yellow looks great on me, camel looks very dull, as do most classic styles - it's easy to generalise but IMO that's where people go wrong! They follow others people's rules and trends rather taking the lead from their unique combination of lifestyle, personality, colouring and body shape and finding something that works for them....

I'm in my early forties now, figured out how to dress for my body shape rather than just wishing it smaller, I've learned the importance of accessories, lipstick is essential, just had my colours done and most things in my wardrobe can now be easily matched together - almost capsule, I feel like I finally know how to dress for me, I really wish I'd known this stuff when I was younger....but I will make sure I pass on the knowledge to dd because once you know, it's fairly easy to look good.

Orangeanddemons · 05/10/2013 08:52

I agree Snowlie. I can't wear any dark colours apart from dark blue and teal. Look like death in them. But look great in pink, lilac and aqua. I wear lots of those, even though I wish I did suit the more sophisticated colours

RockMummy · 05/10/2013 09:23

Couldn't agree more about getting your colours done and wearing them!
I'm a bright leaf autumn and have had lots of compliments when wearing moss green/brick red/teal.
Also dress in your nicest clothes for the day even if other people wouldn't. Echoing Snowlie it's all about your body shape/lifestyle/taste as opposed to theirs!

mrsharrystyles · 05/10/2013 10:05

I am having my colours done on Monday. It's with HOC and it is £99.
I'm very excited. There are four of us going. We booked it ages ago and it's been like waiting for Xmas as a child.
We have all been trying to guess our season, but suspect we will all be wrong. I think I am a spring but am willing to be proved wrong.

flowwithit · 05/10/2013 10:13

I have been trying to work this out but I think I need to get it done so I'm going to have it as my christmas present. What's the difference between house of colour and colour me beautiful. Which is best?

snowlie · 05/10/2013 11:30

I waited for ages to have my colours done too, I saved instead of spending on new clothes - that was hard but I didn't want to buy something in the wrong colour. I guessed I was winter because I thought I suited black but I turned out to be a dramatic autumn - I suit dark and bright colours - the woman who did my colours said she could see why I thought I suited black, because it gave drama to my look, which I need but she recommended other colours that would give drama and work with my colouring in a a more flattering way.

MissDD1971 · 05/10/2013 11:35

really strange - I always thought I was a summer - but I tan quite easily - get a golden glow which everyone comments on and look good in pastels - well ice blues etc.

and I really suit black (from others). I like waking myself up with orange and yellow but mostly accessories ad occasionally stripes etc and it has to be clear/bright yellow etc if you know what I mean.

I think I may be a winter.

MissDD1971 · 05/10/2013 11:36

JacqueisePeacock - generally if you look good in black you're a winter but suit jewel colours and ice blue and pink etc. from the old book I had.

OP posts:
DameFanny · 05/10/2013 11:38

What could I be then? I look best in muddy colours, silvery olives etc. can get away with black. Orange is ok and raspberry - though I wouldn't wear pink anyway. Pale blues make me look anaemic, scarlet's ok. Anyone want to diagnose me? Strawberry mouse hair, very pale, freckles, grey/dark blue eyes, brown lashes and eyebrows...
