Does anyone drink Turmeric?

SundaySimmons · 22/09/2013 08:55

I have read lots of great things about drinking turmeric, how great it is for the skin.

I have read about taking a pinch if it in a glass of water three times a day or in a glass of warm milk.

It sounds revolting!

Anyone drink it or try it?

Off to work now, will bump later if no replies!!!

I've just today bought some capsules. And now I read this and you're saying the capsules are useless? Gahhh!

anotherdayanothersquabble · 19/10/2016 20:47

I mix turmeric, ginger, honey, coconut oil with ground black pepper, cinnamon and cardamon into a paste and keep it in the fridge which I add to warm rice milk. I love it.

I also blend turmeric root, black pepper, mint, coconut oil and orange juice. It is delicious!!

ohdearme1958 · 19/10/2016 20:49

My son in law gives it to my grandchildren routinely.

ohdearme1958 · 19/10/2016 20:52

Sorry, I also cook with it about 3 times per week.

Pukka does a turmeric green tea which is very tasty. It turns white cups yellow on the inside though.

Yep, we have tumeric and warm milk, u only need like a teaspoon of it and to be honest it actually tastes pretty nice, we tend to drink it every other day

girlwithamoonandstaronherhead · 19/10/2016 21:10

I have a story about this. I was drinking turmeric tea when I had really bad flu, chesty thing. So I drank the tea and then started coughing, and coughed to much I was sick, but didn't expect to be sick so unfortunately didn't get to the bathroom. I now have a permanent turmeric tea stain on my bedroom carpet. I can't get it out, I've tried all sorts.
So yes, turmeric is great, but be warned!

VerbenaGirl · 19/10/2016 21:33

My brother put it in scrambled eggs when we stayed with them. It was surprisingly delicious.

gillybeanz · 19/10/2016 21:39

My dh does.
He has auto immunity stuff going on, he drinks it with coconut oil.
Tastes absolutely foul. Grin You also need quite a lot for it to make any difference.
We tend to use it in cooking a lot, great in curries.

A relative made me turmeric mixed with milk and honey for a cold - I felt it really helped, but have never had it again as I've no idea how to make it.

Never heard of using it for anything else other than curry!

You don't have to take it in an unpleasant way. Add it to paellas or risottos for example. I add it to scrambled egg too.

I will try and remember to tell you if I get ‘old-timers’.

gillybeanz · 19/10/2016 22:06

Golden milk sounds like some sort of porno sexual act.
Just take the stuff it has benefits for lots of different ailments and diseases.
If you put too much on your face you'll look like an oompa lumpa. it stains.

Peach9876 · 19/10/2016 23:32

Sorry not read the whole thread.
I drink turmeric paste. Mix turmeric (best if organic apparently....) with water in a pan on heat, whilst stirring add some freshly ground black pepper (makes the good stuff in turmeric more bioaccessible, this one I believe!). Once all combined and smooth add some coconut oil. Mix all together.
I added some cinnamon and ginger, also healing/good for inflammation to make it taste better in milk.
I then put into a sandwich bag (use as a piping bag) and pipe a range of sizes onto greaseproof paper covered board/tray whatever. Let cool and freeze. You can keep some 'fresh' in the fridge and it seems to last a long time.

I started at 1/8th teaspoon in a cup of warm milk at bedtime. I now typically take about 1 teaspoon every night that I remember and can manage to make it. I find it does help with inflammation or at the very least the milk helps me unwind and relax.

Peach9876 · 19/10/2016 23:52

Came back to add. If I want extra during the day but don't want milk (dieting) then I have tiny blobs, sort of like pills. I can just pop a frozen blob of turmeric paste in my mouth and swallow with water/juice/tea like a tablet. Works great for me.

Helpisathand13 · 20/10/2016 00:07

I add organic tumeric to most things I am cooking, into sauces etc also if making homemade chips I add and it gives a nice golden glow. Good in smoothies and soups. If I don't use it my DS comments. It doesn't really add much taste but does add some colour and of course all the fab health benefits already mentioned. Defo tumeric for us!

clippityclop · 20/10/2016 00:24

After reading an article about how it can help prevent dementia (stops plaques in the brain sticking together ) I take capsules. I also sling a couple of teaspoons in to rice at the end of cooking to give a lovely golden colour.

ThanksForAllTheFish · 20/10/2016 01:16

We give of our elderly horse turmeric, black pepper and coconut oil (mixed into a paste) in his feed every day. It really helps with his stiff, creaky joints. I imagine it would have similar benefits for people. Beware the yellow staining - it's really bright and manages to seep right through the rubber gloves I use when mixing.

TheMaddHugger · 20/10/2016 03:57

I drink it in milk [not necessarily cowjuice, any milk like substance]
turmeric, a pinch of black pepper. a bit of ginger.
Helps with arthritis

Paperdolly · 20/10/2016 06:12

Just filled 2 trays of coffee bean moulds with GP I made and put in the freezer. It will be easier to take I think. I'll make scrambled eggs with what's left over in the jar.

PirateCatOvenGloveOption · 20/10/2016 08:20

I buy empty gelatine capsules from Ebay and fill them with Turmeric (wearing gloves as it stains like buggery). This way I don't stain my teeth yellow. The latest thinking (Trust Me, I'm A Doctor TV Prog) is that it doesn't work unless it is cooked but I take it as capsulated raw powder form and it definitely helps as a mild painkiller anti inflammatory. I notice a difference when I don't take it, put it that way.

squiz81 · 20/10/2016 14:52

Are people buying fresh turmeric or will the powdered stuff be just as good?

BagelGoesWalking · 23/10/2016 22:39

For loads of really good info and the Golden Paste recipe, just search Turmeric User Group in FB and join!

They really know their stuff, files contain all the info you could hope for and very informed admins.

piddleypower · 23/10/2016 22:45

Just made golden paste and froze half into teaspoon sized blobs on a baking tray which are now in a bag in freezer. Excellent tip Peach, thanks.
