I like clothes, but generally I don't do fashion. However, when a trend comes along that is easy to wear and comfortable suits me, I'll go with it (and probably wear it more much longer than it remains fashionable Blush )

So, I am liking dresses with ankle boots, but I am 45 and, I think beyond, little flippy dresses. Would something like this Top Shop dress work with either of these Clarks boots ?

Again I'm not looking for cutting edge, just a nod to the trend and a comfortable slightly dressy casual outfit. I have a couple of "parties" coming up where people are celebrating their birthday with a night in the pub.

Any better suggestions gratefully received, but must start with comfy shoes!

Yes, I think it would look good. I would wear them! (Although I am not a fashionista)

ceeveebee · 21/09/2013 07:32

Hmm, no sorry I don't think the dress and either pair of boots would look good, with a dress like that I would wear shoes or maybe shoe boots with a slender heel, but that's just my opinion

Roshbegosh · 21/09/2013 07:38

I love them both but would maybe go for a less chunky boot. Clarks do another ankle boot with a zip and tassel bit and a more pointy toe which I think would look good. I agree feet have to be comfortable and your choice would be fine really.

EeyoreIsh · 21/09/2013 07:40

I love that dress, excellent choice.

I think it would work with ankle boots (assuming you have slim calves). I'm not sure I'd choose that first pair of boots, but that second pair would work. I would think about the boots having a bit more of a heel, and a different colour. light brown might be better, otherwise it might look a bit too matchy, and if that's the look you want, I think shoes might be better.

Somethingyesterday · 21/09/2013 07:43

Hmmm... I'm inclined to think that a lot of people who are older than you would find that dress depressingly tame (and rather office-y.) The boots are inoffensive...

Are you actually wanting to be invisible? Do you have friends (or family) who give you the impression that at 45 you should be disappearing into the background? Are you aware that several of the greatest fashion houses are headed by women of a similar age? (Am I ranting in Sand B again?)

It's too early for me to have any links to hand. But I'm sure you could find something more exciting.

PastaBeeandCheese · 21/09/2013 07:47

Nice dress but I think the boots are too chunky for it.

That said I have the first pair of boots and I love them with a casual dress / casual skirt and thick tights / tucked into jeans so I'd advise buying them anyway!

Roshbegosh · 21/09/2013 08:08

Come on somethingyesterday don't just criticise and then not suggest something better.

SundaySimmons · 21/09/2013 08:17

I have the boots in taupe, they are very comfortable. I am still deciding whether to get them in the blue.

Don't forget there is a 20% off voucher for clarks on here.

The dress is lovely but definitely not to be worn with those boots.

snowlie · 21/09/2013 08:19

I like the dress but I think the shoes ( which I like too) are too casual for it, a black leather shoe boot might work.

SundaySimmons · 21/09/2013 08:30

Would you not wear the teal boots with black or grey skinny jeans and a dressy loose fitting teal top/blouse?

SparkyTGD · 21/09/2013 08:37

I like the boots but wouldn't wear with a skirt or dress, too wide at ankle I think, although if you are very slim & confident it would probably look fab Grin

I'd wear those boots with black skinnies and a dressy top.

I'd probably go for a more fitted ankle boot like these or these with a dress.

SparkyTGD · 21/09/2013 08:39

Didn't realise you'd linked 2 pairs of boots OP, I love the first pair but the 2nd pair would be better with a dress, IMO.

Roshbegosh · 21/09/2013 08:46

The Khalistra ones were the ones I meant but didn't link too, great with a skirt or dress.

PractialJoke · 21/09/2013 08:54

Lol Something. No need to take offense on my behalf. Today im wearing shocking pink skinny jeans-dont think im invisible!

Yiu're right about the dress being officey, i was thinking it would do for work too but hoping ankle boots would make it a bit different for the pub.

Was really asking about the kind if shape dress that works with ankle boots, if you don't want a little girl short and flippy one . Am quite happy to do short or flippy just not both

I think it would look great no to floaty top and skinnies though I think that is mumsy whereas fitted dress chunky boots quite cool.

PractialJoke · 21/09/2013 09:07

Thank you noddy, that's exactly where im coming from, although im sure i would wear the boots with jeans and the dress with shoes, on occasion, too

OP posts:
noddyholder · 21/09/2013 09:16

Yes I think both would go with lots of other things too.i have a similar dress ad boots but black and I wear a lot. I like te contrast though and think dress would be too office/wedding with smart shoe boots

PractialJoke · 21/09/2013 09:27

Unless youre in the office!

OP posts:
SparkyTGD · 21/09/2013 09:33

I think it depends on the top tbh for floaty top to be 'mumsy' noddy, if bought from fatface/white stuff etc maybe.

but OP wasn't asking about that,

Finding myself getting narked for no reason.

Ujjayi · 21/09/2013 09:40

OP love the boots and the dress but not together in the same outfit. The dress does have the potential to be office-ish but completely depends on how you style it. So I would avoid shoes altogether and go straight for boots but less "western" than the ones you linked to. these from Sam Edelman or more shoe-boot type (although personally not keen on the silver zip).

That dress would look fab with opaques, flat mid-calf bikers and a chunky oversized cardigan too - takes it from smart to cosy-casual. I have bought a few Top Shop dresses similar to this one over the summer and have been impressed with the quality. I find that a nude slip beneath stops any unwanted cling and some extra warmth as some of them can be quite thin (geez......I'm turning into my mother!!!)

snowlie · 21/09/2013 09:41

I'd try the first pair sparky linked to. For some reason the lighter sole on the other pair just makes them too casual....and I think only the teenagers with perfect skin and limbs can do the scruffy boots/dress combination.

soaccidentprone · 21/09/2013 09:47

these would be a better option?

snowlie · 21/09/2013 09:49

Or these?

bunnymother · 21/09/2013 09:52

The dress is lovely - terrific find! Have you seen the Dune Nins? They are very similar to the Rag & Bone Newburys and would look good w a dress. They are a bit high, but look great in RL.
