Merino cardigan to wear lounging about with newborn

Can anyone help me find a new cardigan to replace a much loved but very tired cardigan. I'm after ideally a merino wool in grey, navy or cream. Needs to be longish (I'm 5"9) that I can chuck on over pjs or whatever I managed to thrown on with a newborn. We've a cold house and I'm no doubt going to be up a lot in the night feeding. My current one was from the White Company and has lasted brilliantly except for me catching it on a door and it ripped. Needs to be smart enough to wear with visitors and quick trips to the shops too.
The WC haven't got anything in this winters range which fits the bill, I've tried Hush - the cardigown thing is pretty good except the sleeves were really baggy.
Budget of £150
Huge TIA

I like Gap merino. Or try TK Maxx, I have a couple of bargain merino cardis from there.

Have been v pleased with my Gap merino cardie purchased a couple of weeks ago.

orangina · 19/09/2013 13:44

What about a cardigown from Hush? It is a bit expensive, but my friend swears by them....

orangina · 19/09/2013 13:45

Aurgh, didn't read your OP properly, sorry!

CairngormsClydesdale · 19/09/2013 13:46

Oh god mine only goes with toddlers. :(

Toptack · 19/09/2013 13:47

Um - looks at own cardi that has just been sprayed with regurgitated milk - perhaps something more washable might be a good plan?

HandMini · 19/09/2013 13:47

I would go for something more like the CardiGown. The GAP one looks a bit small and formal. I bought a lovely cream wool / merino mix cardi from MUJI. Would never have thought to look there, a real surprise.

GladbagsGold · 19/09/2013 13:50

I don't think merino is very easy to wash/dry is it? But if you are set on it, it might be worth getting 2 x £75 tops so you can have one to wear and one in the wash.

dottyaboutstripes · 19/09/2013 13:51

I bought that Gap one a couple of weeks ago and am very pleased with it (comes up v big though)
Just noticed it says "Dry Clean Only". Sod that!

dottyaboutstripes · 19/09/2013 13:52

I have to agree though, that merino & newborn = not best idea ever!

BreakingBadger · 19/09/2013 13:55

I never understand people who spend £££ on stuff that will end up covered in vomit. I love clothes, but Primark is your friend for those first 3 months - numerous soft jersey jammies, comfy joggers and synthetic tops that will wash and dry easily. Get a nice winter coat and/or boots for the money when newborn is safely in buggy unlikely to hit you with bodily fluids.

But since you are probably going to ignore that, try a DKNY Cozy, they're lovely for lounging.

IslaValargeone · 19/09/2013 13:55

Can I just clarify, have you got the newborn yet, or is this for when he/she arrives?
I'm guessing it's the former, because I can't imagine anyone spending £150 on a cardi with a brand new baby :o

My baby wasn't vomity. I lived in two hand wash only jumpers when he was tiny. Mine were from White Stuff and Wrap. Wrap do gorgeous soft stuff which lasts really well.

carrie74 · 19/09/2013 14:17

Ooh yes, DKNY cozy (now I've read properly). I've got two (but not purchased until children were considerably older: 7&5)

HelgatheHairy · 19/09/2013 15:13

If you have your heart set on the cardigan get lots of muslins. DD is 5.5 weeks old and has thrown up on everything I own, including my hair. DH had it worse though, she threw up in his mouth!

FreeButtonBee · 19/09/2013 15:47

I am with you OP, I have the pukiest baby known to man - 7 months and still up chucks 20-30 times a day! and I had a great cardi from Anthropologie. It wasn't merino - but is a wool mix and hand wash. I chucked it in the machine in a lingerie bag on the delicate cycle. Definitely get something with tight sleeves and pockets are also useful. Oh and it must cover your arse!

Merino is quite often machine washable. I love having beautiful snuggly things to put on when feeling blobby and tired with a newborn.

Paribus · 19/09/2013 15:58

DKNY cozy

suntodayplease · 19/09/2013 16:52

Thanks for the helpful suggestions. I have 1 DC already and have no problems with merino wool being itchy or non washable. Wool wash on machine never caused me problems in the past. Also very used to dealing with vomit etc. didn't realise I was unable to spend ££ on clothing post birth though, new to me that one.
Will check out the DKNY cozy, sounds promising.

Have you looked at woolovers? They have some nice merino cardigans, machine washable and pretty reasonable prices. Try to ignore the frumpy pictures- the quality is great and they look better on (IMO)

IslaValargeone · 19/09/2013 17:02

Nobody was suggesting you can't spend ££ on clothing post birth.
Lighten up. Hmm

BitchyRestingFace · 19/09/2013 17:20

Yes, I would look at Woolovers. You could get four or five items for your budget there. All nice natural fibres, too, wool and merino wool and cashmere and silk.

Totally understandable to want a bit of luxury, especially post-birth. Fleeces etc have their place but would only make me feel grottier if I was wearing them day in, day out. Merino is a lovely fabric.

I have a cashmere "wrap" from Boden which does the job OP describes. It rarely leaves the house, but it is gorgeous to wear inside, over PJs, as a smarter version of a dressing gown. I use it all the time.
