Dramatic I know...... hairdresser just been and questioned had I been cutting a fringe in or something as I had shorty bits where my hair falls either side - I have like a layered bob style some would say. I wash it everyday and generally straighten it too, I use 2 in one shampoo in conditioner ant dandruff and a nice line in snow if I wear a black top. we have decided this fringe has appeared from snapping off - maybe I brushed it harsh on holiday or caught my brush in it I don't remember. She has suggested I stop using my straightners as much change my shampoo and not washit every day which I cannot even bare to consider - help me change my ways!

I think it may be the straightners - surely it can't be good to use them every day?

I wash mine about every 3 days. Sometimes every other day - it depends on what days I exercise - as I tend to wash it on those days.

MrsCampbellBlack · 03/09/2013 18:47

I would think its the straightening not the washing your hair daily. I don't use straighteners at all now as they did my hair no favours condition wise.

mrsmindcontrol · 03/09/2013 18:47

My hair is fine & started to snap in the same area you describe when I used to straighten it every day.
I'm no expert but I'd suggest the following:

  • definitely change your shampoo to a nourishing/anti damage one. 2in1 is renowned for being crap
  • buy an intensive conditioner and do a hair masque with it at least once or twice a week
  • get a heat protection spray and use it religiously before straightening.

Personally, as my hair is so fine, I can't leave it more than a day without washing either but I do think the above steps should help.

gamerchick · 03/09/2013 18:47

If you straighten every day.. do you use any kind of defence beforehand?

I wash mine every 2 days and have a graduated bob. I wash and dry with separate shampoo/conditioner. Spray some head defence on and brush it through then dry/straighten it using serum afterwards.

The second day I use a wide hairband and tuck it into that or if it's feeling alright I'll do a quick straighten.

I will every couple of weeks or so just wash and let dry naturally if i'm just stopping in the house that day.

Could you maybe use a separate conditioner after your 2 in 1 maybe?

Oh, and the only straighteners I have used (and I have tried a lot) that didn't damage my hair, are GHDs. No idea why.

gallicgirl · 03/09/2013 18:49

I wash and condition mine every day. If I leave it two days it gets pretty greasy.
I blow dry it quickly and use gloop.

It is strong, healthy and shiny so I suspect the problem lies with the straighteners. Maybe you need a different hairstyle which doesn't require straightening?

DragonsAreReal · 03/09/2013 18:49

I wash mine every 3 days but the blonde highlights stop it being greasy, without highlights I can't make it to 3 days.

I don't straighten every day and my hair is in really lush condition. I put it up and use putty stuff to make it curly ish and I staighten it when I want to look extra nice or going out out.

forevergreek · 03/09/2013 18:51

Don't straighten
Wash every other day
Use shampoo, then conditioner and leave on 5 mins, then wash off

It's def the straightening though. I have only straightened/ heated tongs on my hair maybe 10 times in my life ever ( for events maybe), and my hairdresser says its some of the strongest natural hair he has seen. It's also never been dyed ( which also strips it)

nomorecrumbs · 03/09/2013 18:51

Make sure you're not using a brush on it while it's still wet. Run through with fingers until on the dryer side of damp, then use a comb.

Haylebop12 · 03/09/2013 18:52

I have long thick hair, I wash every other day or even every third days, I try to blow dry only once in that time thougg as I HAVE to use straighteners. I tend to use straighteners 2/3 times a week. I use separate shampoo/cond. I have GHDs also an I think because they are much hotter they have less contact with my hair and it takes round ten minutes.

Haylebop12 · 03/09/2013 18:53

My hair is also not dyed and very strong.

MissDD1971 · 03/09/2013 18:54

I wash every other day.

Let it also dry naturally too. in winter/autumn rough dry then dry naturally.

straighteners ruin hair - especially highlighted, fine hair.

Babyliss rotating brush (forget proper name) is EXCELLENT for styling hair and doesn't just curl etc. also doesn't damage highlighted or fine hair.

also a good leave in conditioner once a week helps a lot

KosherBacon · 03/09/2013 18:56

Have you recently had a baby? I had one 11 months ago and now have lots of new growth around my temples and hair line which could be taken as broken hair. Could it be that?

noyouhavehadawee · 03/09/2013 18:56

i use ghd's and i spray it quickly with tresemme heat defence - i don't brush it through mind i just spray then straighten, it is really fine hair but if i leave it to dry itself it looks like a wavy mess - wow i don't think i have had such a response thanks Smile. I have some separate shampp and conditioner tea tree stuff i just got for dd - how do i hair masque? Tomorrow i will try not to straighten and will await the your hairs a tip comments at work!

for hair masque just buy one in shops, leave for about 5 minutes, you can wrap in cling film etc and apply all over. then rinse thoroughly.

the L'oreal ever pure range (in the coloured, metallic tubes) have great leave in conditioners.

VerySmallSqueak · 03/09/2013 19:00

Wash every 4 or 5 days.Dry naturally if you can.
Don't use straighteners.
Use a natural/organic shampoo and conditioner for your flaky scalp - I believe it's all the chemicals that cause flaking and that harsh anti dandruff shampoos are cause and not solution.
Clips and hairbands damage hair.

noyouhavehadawee · 03/09/2013 19:02

my baby is seven so no to that, when on hols i noticed the short bits and did think ooo is that new growth but my hairdresser thinks def not, my hair is all natural colour including the one grey blighter spotted tonight!

I would get an adult range for processed hair, say Aussie brand

Yep to ditching straighteners

Grumpywino · 03/09/2013 20:01

I wash mine daily as I exercise daily, but have to wear my hair up for work. I only use straighteners for nights out, I wouldn't dream of using them everyday.

NoComet · 03/09/2013 20:05

Mine gets washed every two to three days, that's why it's reasonably long. If it's short it needs washing at least once a day and I simply cannot be arsed.

carlywurly · 03/09/2013 20:11

I wash, condition and spray with Argan oil every day and my hair is in really good condition despite loads of blonde highlights.
Straighteners have a horrible effect, I only use them on special nights out.

Mominatrix · 03/09/2013 20:15

wash and condition everyday
light blow dry (hair very thick)
My hair is not damaged and very healthy

noyouhavehadawee · 03/09/2013 20:20

ok i have just got back from Tesco where i stood in the aisle for about half an hour and changed my mind several times . i got a loreal elvive restore masque pot thing and a vo5 revive me daily separate shampoo and conditioner - i will use the shampoo tomorrow and the intense elvive thing if i have time enough in morning too then try and do the elvive thing weekly with tuther every other day until the weekend when i will dare to not wsh my hair Saturday till the night when at a party.
