Oil pulling - if you do it, I have a question for you

I saw this mentioned on a thread, then read up on it online. Sounded great so gave it a go (with coconut oil) but after about 3 days I had really sore spots at the base of my tongue.

I couldn't find anything about side effects like these on line. Stopped doing it but spots have now migrated to the tip of my tongue and are still really sore a week on.

Anyone experienced this too? Any advice??

TIA

Oil pulling? Is that a typo, because I can't work out what's going on?

MrsRadicchio · 03/09/2013 10:39

No its not!

I have never had this problem.
You could always try using a different oil for a few days and see if it clears up the soreness.

Chocrock · 03/09/2013 10:57

I use organic sunflower oil and have never had this problem. You could try switching oils....

MelanieCheeks · 03/09/2013 11:01

I use coconut oil and haven't come across the spots thing - might it be unrelated? Anything else strange you have been doing or putting in your mouth?

Hmmm, sounds like I have been unlucky then. Though I haven't been rinsing with salt water - are you supposed to?

I did this once with coconut oil - stupidly rinsed with cold water and the residue oil set in my mouth ha

PomBearArmy · 03/09/2013 12:15

I eat coconut oil for my thyroid condition, and I get a sore dry feeling in my throat after I've swallowed it, maybe that's the same thing? I don't know what it is though!

MelanieCheeks · 03/09/2013 13:14

Hmmm, I dont rinse. I spit (and must remember to spit in the bin, not the sink) and then have my cup of tea.

There is some bollocks on that link

"The benefit of Dr. Karach's method is that the oil therapy heals the whole body in perpetuity. In terminal diseases such as cancer, Aids and chronic infections this treatment method has been shown to successfully replace all others. Dr. Karach has successfully healed a chronic leukemia patient with 15 years of harsh treatment methods behind him. Acute arthritis in 1 patient who was totally bedridden was removed from his body in 3 days with no inflammation apparent."

LeGavrOrf · 03/09/2013 14:17

I have never heard of this though.

What does everyone on here do it for? Health benefits.

How does it work?

Notfootball · 03/09/2013 14:41

I started doing this after last week's thread too and have noticed whiter teeth, mine obviously. No sore spots though. Which oil are you using? I'm using coconut oil and rinsing with warm water afterwards.

It sounds worth it for the clean mouth feeling, I will give it a go.

I already use coconuyt oil as a make up remover, but it is a bit tiresome as it is solid in the bottle and I have to run it under the hot tap.

I presume any old crap coconut oil is ok, mine is a 60p bottle from the asian grocer.

Perhaps the spots are similar to the oil cleansing method, it doesn't suit some people and causes them to break out.

MelanieCheeks · 03/09/2013 14:56

Clean mouth, whiter teeth, and seems to help in keeping my mouth ulcers at bay.

I'd be sceptical about some of those more extreme health claims.

Notfootball · 03/09/2013 15:05

LeGav many here use organic coconut oil but I just use the KTC £2 a tub 100% coconut oil from my local Asian shop for my hair, skin, teeth, the lot. Same stuff.

AndThatsWhatIThinkOfYou · 03/09/2013 15:49

I get mine from superdrug £2.65

YourHandInMyHand · 03/09/2013 16:32

Do those of you that do this manage 20 minutes?? That seems a long time to me to slot into my morning routine!

TiredMule · 03/09/2013 16:34

This sounds really interesting! How long do you do it for? One of the links above said 15mins-not sure i could manage that!

I usually get about 10 minutes, but I'm trying to increase it.

dirtyface · 04/09/2013 12:18

oh i have started doing this, about a week ago

not had what you describe though

could it be the toxins coming out and causing spots :S

YoureMyOrangeGoldWifeNowDave · 04/09/2013 12:19

I bought some coconut oil to try this last week but I can only manage about 5 minutes before I have to spit it out so I can tell DD off

A bit confused though - are you supposed to brush with toothpaste too? I've been brushing with paste first and then using the oil but I'm not sure if that's right Blush
