Do you tip at high end hair salons - and how much?

If a hair cut costs £80 with a normal stylist (not proprietor), for example, how much (if at all) do you tip?

What about the technician?

I generally give the stylist a fiver and a couple of quid to the trainee who washes my hair/brings me a drink.

Pancakeflipper · 01/09/2013 00:25

I always tip my hair dresser but she always refuses and gives me it back.

I think she feels sorry for me .

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 01/09/2013 00:28

I don't tip.

I don't get the odd rules about who you are supposed to tip and who you don't. I don't tip in Tesco, for instance. Nor do I tip the binmen at Christmas.

K8Middleton · 01/09/2013 00:31

I don't tip. Unless it is an amazing haircut and I've been really, really well looked after. Then I will round up to nearest 0 or 5.

timidviper · 01/09/2013 00:33

I don't tip either. My stylist is the salon owner and my hair costs £80-100 each time so I think that's enough.

I don't tip the trainee as I think it would be odd to tip her and nobody else

Pancakeflipper · 01/09/2013 00:35

Oh my stylist is the owner... that might be why. SHe probably looks at my car and then at her luxury Merc and think I need the extra few quid more.

Tasmania · 01/09/2013 00:50

My current stylist is the salon owner, so never really had to tip and do this, but an impending move house-wise may result in a switch to another salon where (sadly) the owner's fee would be a little unsustainable (unless I become a famous or something). So switching to a stylist at approximately £80 per cut instead of the owner.

WHEN do you tip them? I mean the junior who washes your hair, for example. When you pay at the end???

Surely, this whole thing warrants a hair salon etiquette guide!?!

@Pancakeflipper - Mind you... I think ANYONE has a better car than me... lol. But they won't know that...

thaliablogs · 01/09/2013 08:06

I tip everyone - 15% of the hair cost for the stylist (or thereabouts), £3 for the junior who washes hair etc. it's very expensive! At my high end salon it is expected, they have envelopes for you to put the tip in!

forevergreek · 01/09/2013 08:12

I don't tip. Sometimes I round up. I never carry cash anyway so can only add to main bill on card instead of cash tips split up

orangina · 01/09/2013 09:13

My hairdresser does me a deal and I always tip her £5 cash (about 10%). I don't tip the hair washers or tea bringers or coat closet door openers....

(imminent bankrupcy)

lililon · 01/09/2013 09:16

I don't tip either. I always feel that I should, but I simply can't afford to pay a penny more than the cost of the actual haircut. I pay £65.00 for a job that takes around 40 mins, which I feel is more than enough.

MrsDavidBowie · 01/09/2013 09:46

I have hair coloured and cut every 6 weeks...about £90. I tip a tenner...same girl does colour and cut.

Arisbottle · 01/09/2013 09:52

Depending one what I am having done my hair varies between £80 and £150 every six weeks.

I tip £10 between colourist and stylist.

Callmedreckly · 01/09/2013 09:55

£50 for a fantastic colour which I save up every week for so I don't tip.

I feel guilty but pay by card & mumble something or other about having no cash Blush whilst foraging in my bag to avoid eye contact!

Then £35 for a cut, Im seriously thinking of having it cut at home for £12 ( dry cut )

MadeOfStarDust · 01/09/2013 10:02

£15 for a haircut here!

I take it the £90 ones include colour/ restyle or washed in the tears of virgins from the Himalayas....

£90!!! every 6 weeks - that's a summer holiday!!

PTA · 01/09/2013 10:09

Just got my hair cut at the local FE college again, £4. It's been done wonderfully as the lecturer did most of it. Obviously not allowed to tip.

The disadvantage was that it was about 2hrs for the cut as everything was explained in detail to the students but overall I'm very happy with it.

Tasmania · 01/09/2013 11:46

@MadeOfStarDust

£80 (well, actually more like £85) is only a Wash, Cut & Finish with a Stylist (not Creative Director or anything)

No colour. That would be an additional £55+ (depending on what you want more.

Typical prices for high end salons.

I used to go to the academy days of high end hair salons many moons ago... when I was a student and had the flexibility of going middle of the day on a weekday. When I worked in London, there was one posh salon that did academy nights near where I worked, so did that for a year or so (and the 'teacher', i.e. famous hairdresser, would often cut my hair to show the student... so why not?).

Now, that won't work as I no longer live or work there, and I would travel into London on a Saturday.

However, I am really talking about high end salons here, not how to save the pennies. I am very fussy with my hair - to the point where, for some time, I cut it myself as I didn't trust the "normal" hairdresser (I was actually better doing it myself than most, as I knew what I wanted... and nobody could give me the haircut they simply managed to do best - though might not suit me). But the length I have now (and want to keep) is difficult to do on my own.

I pay £135 for mine to be done. I don't tip as I feel it's priced highly enough for the stylist to be decently paid.

TooMuchRain · 01/09/2013 15:02

No, I get mine done by the owner - mostly because he is great, but a little bit because it avoids the embarassment of tipping

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 01/09/2013 15:08

I don't tip. I did once try to tip ('have you got a tip jar?' while holding out a fiver) but the hairdresser and receptionist looked so blank and confused that I felt mortified AND patronising. The salon owner is from Mexico so I assume she is from a tipping culture but there is no tip jar or expectation. I spend between £100 and £150 on haircut and colour every 2 months (maybe my tip was too low?)

IcedTeaOneSugar · 01/09/2013 15:23

I don't tip, but I do take a small but nice gift at Christmas, a nice candle in a tin or small box of handmade chocs.

LynetteScavo · 01/09/2013 15:43

I don't tip, but as I have it coloured every three weeks I virtually live in the salon. The tipping envelopes haven't been out for a while now....they are very well hidden behind a vase.

primallass · 01/09/2013 17:08

No I don't tip as I imagine my hairdresser earns far more than me and it is a (wealthy) family business.
