Mummies who don't want to get their hair wet in the swimming pool.
I'm really cross win myself and sad as I actually like swimming and want to go in with the children. But the thought of having to spray, dry and straighten my hair afterwards (2 hours) is pretty much prohibitive.
I'd looooove for swimming hats to come (back ?) into fashion. Bring on the big flowery ones!

Do people not use the rubber swimming caps anymore? No way I'd expose my dyed hair to chlorine.

JobsComfortBlanket · 27/08/2013 11:20

Just wear a swimming cap. What's the problem?

You can still find those big flowery hats on ebay, bring back the fashion yourself ;-). They are quite pricy though.

My top tip for actually keeping your hair dry is to buy 2 silicon caps (stretchier, longer lasting & less hurty than latex). Cut the top out of one of them so it looks like an alice band, and wear this over the top of the first cap to seal the edges.

Or - buy a cap designed for long hair, they are bigger & have a bit more room in them.

I think the old-fashioned latex caps that have a chin strap & come quite far down the nape of your neck look as if they'd do a good job of keeping hair dry, but have never actually tried one.

How bizarre. 3 questions.

  1. What terrible thing do you think will happen if Shock someone sees you without your hair done after having gone swimming?
  1. If it takes two hours to do your hair how on earth do you manage to go anywhere? What a spectacular waste of time!
  1. Why do swimming caps have to be fashionable in order for it to be acceptable for you to wear one?
fieldfare · 27/08/2013 14:52

I agree with flowery's questions!

Why does it matter? Take your kids swimming, splash about like a loon and have fun with them. No-one else cares what you look like in there, or when you've come out.

Mummyoftheyear · 27/08/2013 21:17

Lol
Doesn't take long for people to be bitchy, does it!
Thank you for the tips, those of you who kindly gave some ;)

Bitchy? Confused Just trying to understand. Doesn't make any sense to me, hence the questions.

But if you don't like my questions, and prefer tips, how about, if you are cross and sad at being one of those "mummies", then how about...er... don't be ?

Or is that bitchy too?

JobsComfortBlanket · 27/08/2013 21:56

What, tips like 'wear a swimming cap'?

Have a Biscuit

Mind you don't get it soggy. you loon

soaccidentprone · 27/08/2013 22:01

Last time I went swimming my hair looked like a shorter, redder version of this Hmm

WipsGlitter · 27/08/2013 22:05

Two hours - crikey!!

But yes, silicon caps sort of glide on and don't rip your hair.

madammecholet · 27/08/2013 22:11

I kinda see where you're coming from mummyoftheyear though, I used to LOVE swimming when I was young... now I've got kids I only take them on bad hair days so I know it won't matter if I get soaked.... (which it will)..

Don't let it stop you though...

LadyMilfordHaven · 27/08/2013 22:22

A woman. Not a mummy

LadyMilfordHaven · 27/08/2013 22:23

I was on holiday with a woman who went back to her apartment to wash her (dyed) hair every time it got wet. Every time.

Capitola · 27/08/2013 23:01

I can't imagine caring so much about my hair that it would stop me swimming with the kids.

Or caring so much about my hair that I would wear a swimming hat, because unless you're a competitive swimmer - you're going to look a total twat.

And I have got really long curly hair that takes an age to dry with a hairdryer.

Life is too short to worry about your hair to this extent.

squoosh · 27/08/2013 23:06

'Or caring so much about my hair that I would wear a swimming hat, because unless you're a competitive swimmer - you're going to look a total twat.'

Well I wouldn't care if people thought I looked a 'twat', I'd wear the swimming hat anyway. I still get to swim and I don't turn my hair green. Win win I'd say.

TheYamiOfYawn · 28/08/2013 00:46

I wear a swimming cap - there are only 2 showers at my local swimming pool, so anything more than a quick rinse is v. antisocial, and I dye my hair, and don't want the ends to frizzle off from chloring damage, and in winter it's too cold to wait for the bus with wet hair (mine is thick, and the hairdryers at the swimming pool are only marginally more effective than getting my preschooler to blow on my head).

Rhianna1980 · 28/08/2013 00:55

I use a silicon Adidas cap. It does the job of keeping my hair dry .

Mummyoftheyear · 28/08/2013 07:50

It's really to save time as it's hard enough to wash n dry two v excited under 5s, let alone think of myself!
My hair has a tendency to go into Bug Frizz Ugly-mode, so I also go in just on days I know it could do with a wash anyway. Just a far cry from my childhood 'can't wait to jump in' days.
I've had a keratin treatment on my hair and it's really worked wonders to tame the frizz. I know that going in chlorinated water often will stuff it up and can't afford to have it treated more frequently than every 5-6 months. I'm taking them seizing every day at the moment. Agree about looking like a twit in a swimming hat. Exactly how I'd feel.
Tempted to buy one anyway if its a good one that'd keep water off completely (nape of neck and hairline). Thx for fab tips on making a hair band to go on top of first one! You've obviously been there n done that with them!

Not in Mediterranean heat. A hat ?

NoSnowJustSand · 28/08/2013 07:56

Just wear a swim cap and get on with it. You'd hate to be me, I've taken my children swimming every day for the last week, sometimes twice a day, getting my hair wet as I play and help with swimming technique and we live in a very humid environment. My hair dryer is broken.

Ledkr · 28/08/2013 08:01

Op ignore the massive sense of humour failure on here.
I go swimming most days too (have a fully swimming 2yr old) but it is a hassle on the Barnett and some people can't just walk around like old frizz balls.
I got your point. Grin

ceramicunicorn · 28/08/2013 08:03

I've had a brazilian blow dry as well (is that what you've had?) I didn't know you weren't supposed to get chlorine on it. I take ds swimming about once a week and it doesn't seem to have changed anything. I often don't wash my hair for a couple of hours after swimming either as it's such a faff to do it at the pool.

ShipwreckedAndComatose · 28/08/2013 08:07

Ahh! The beauty of the scrapeitbackinarushedponytail hairstyle! It's a look I have perfected since the arrival of my kids.

Parmarella · 28/08/2013 08:45

I only take the kids swimming on days I need to wash my hair anyway.

But it does not take me 2 hrs to style my hair, thankfully

It is a bit wavy when left to dry by itself, but my hairdresser says wavy is IN and very sleek straight hair is OUT

HURRAH
