Pigmentation on upper lip

PurpleBucket · 23/08/2013 09:38

Hello again!

So another beauty question..... Generally I have good skin but for about three years now, I get pigmentation on my upper lip every summer (fine in the winter when not tanned). I wear factor 50 SPF every day and a hat when on holiday. The pigmentation could be worse but it's not great and I am conscious of it as it looks like I have a moustache.

Any tips on how I can deal with this? Dermatologist recommended a cream but can't say the pigmentation looks any better. Or perhaps the cream stopped it getting worse.

Love having a bit of colour in the summer but hate having a moustache Hmm

I used to have this and it used to drive me nuts! Mine was caused by taking the contraceptive pill and since I stopped taking it I have never had problems with pigmentation again. I tried all sorts of creams and potions and even rubbed lemon on the affected areas to no avail. Only ditching the pill helped.

mrsravelstein · 23/08/2013 17:57

i've tried a few things as i have exactly the same problem. there's a frighteningly expensive thing made by skinceuticals which was rec'd to me a year ago and i haven't tried yet as sort of can't bear to pay £80 and then it not work... am currently using factor 50 every day which stops it getting worse, and using this which is cheapish and seems to help a bit

the clinique dark spot corrector did nothing for me at all (the one with the picture of the egg on it?)

mrsharrystyles · 23/08/2013 19:39

Clinique one did nothing for me. Fairly useless IMO.

PurpleBucket · 23/08/2013 19:45

Thank you all for the responses.

Sunshine- what is Obagi Nuderm? And is the Skin Ceuticals product you use the very expensive one that another poster mentioned (sorry can't remember the names and my phone doesn't let me look at the other posts while replying).

I'm not on the pill so it can't be that.

Have also read that the Clinique product is good but a bit suspicious as generally not keen on Clinique.

The product I have is Ducray "melascreen éclat". As I said, the pigmentation is still there so I am not sure if it is working because pigmentation is not getting worse or whether it is doing nothing at all! I use avene SPF 50 but will look at the other brand (helicare, I think).

Seems to me that there is nothing that can remove the pigmentation completely (other than winter for me).

So how do you successfully cover up the pigmentation? I don't usually wear foundation every day but have foundation, tinted moisturiser and various concealers

YSL touché éclat or something similar helps to disguise, and yes to sunblock.

I get this on my upper lip too and have been using Palmers Skin Success Fade Cream Ultra for about 3 months (including when I went on holiday) with factor 30 on top and it has faded the dark skin without any adverse effects. It worked pretty quickly too.

FoxyHarlow123 · 23/08/2013 21:24

Clinique does nothing - don't waste your money. Obagi works but it's hardcore! My skin was red and peeling for weeks but it does the job.

PurpleBucket · 23/08/2013 21:41

The palmers cream sounds interesting. So does obagi but a little scared by the red and peeling skin. Has the pigmentation come back at all since you did the treatment or do you think it is gone for good?

No idea what caused mine. Suspecting pregnancy hormones (although didn't actually have any pigmentation when pregnant)

Yes should use touché éclat as a cover up. Tried my Laura mercier secret camouflage concealer but it looked really thick and heavy there

Just looked at obagi website.
Which obagi product did you use foxy?

Marking place - I have upper lip melasma since my pregnancy with DD. And am about to move to LA so it can only get worse :(

Re concealer, Clinique airbrush is good, just like Touché Éclat but cheaper.

brimfullofasha · 23/08/2013 22:50

I've had this on my upper lip since I was pregnant. I'm using factor 50'and hoping it will fade when I stop breastfeeding. I have very sensitive skin so I'm nervous about some of the products that claim to fade them.

rootypig · 24/08/2013 20:15

I was in Kiehls today and they have a pigmentation fader - I didn't buy, got a sample, but online reviews are positive and it's £36 for 30ml so cheaper than some

FoxyHarlow123 · 24/08/2013 21:02

Obagi Nu derm and yes I used the whole system but it's really just a couple of products that do the job. You have to be super careful about keeping your face out of the sun though.

sybilfaulty · 24/08/2013 21:07

I had this badly after Dd was born and was very upset. I was bf and tried to stay out of the sun. Also used factor 50. It faded very soon after the summer and did not return with subsequent pregnancies.

Sympathies to everyone suffering with it now. We are in company though. Kirstie Allsop also suffered badly post pregnancy (and is fine now).
