So I tried coconut oil?

I slathered my very thick, fairly long hair in the stuff. Sat feeling a bit smug about how lovely my hair was going to look for about 20 mins. So far so good. And then I tried to rinse it out.

How do you get it out? It's stuck in my hair in big greasy clumps. I've washed it twice, conditioned it, combed it. Rinsed for ages and ages. My hair is going to be so greasy tomorrow!

What did I do wrong? Confused

How can you swish a mouthful of oil around in your gob for twenty minutes? Shock

Shodan · 26/08/2013 09:24

I tried the oil pulling and tbh felt sick so haven't tried again. However the coconut oil, used as a moisturiser, has definitely smoothed out the crinkly skin on my neck.

Oil Pulling

Take about a teaspoon of coconut oil, preferably organic virgin oil.

Swish round your mouth for as long as you can, building up to 20 minutes.

Spit oil into the bin, not the toilet or the sink.

I always do a further quick swish with hot salted water at the end.

I will find a link later, but IIRC researchers have found a link between the bad bacteria that can live in your mouth and heart disease.

Dh has been swishing for about a week now. He started initially as he has quite bad sinus that wont clear up. He says the 'sinus gunk" is definitely moving, but I noticed the different in his teeth nearly straight away. They are much whiter and his tongue is all nice and pink Grin. I haven't braved the swish yet, but I have swallowed a teaspoon of (melted) oil each day for my ibs.

When washing coconut oil out of your hair do not wet your hair before applying shampoo. Lather some shampoo up in your hand and apply it to the the oiled hair. Lather it in and then rinse and you should have no problems with residual grease.

alltoomuchrightnow · 26/08/2013 13:17

yes absolutely, shampoo first is the only way! before wetting! Lush's I love juicy is great

dirtyface · 26/08/2013 18:56

i swear by coconut oil too, i use it as a cleanser (OCM) and a moisturiser on my face and body

not being big headed but my skin and hair have been amazing since i started using it about 18 months ago

i use it on my hair and scalp as well, overnight when i am going to be washing it the next morning

to rinse it out, i wet my hair just a bit then lather up with shampoo and leave it on for a minute or 2. then rinse it out thoroughly and repeat. for me it stops any oily residue.

am really interested in this oil pulling thing too but think i would gag

bigbuttons · 26/08/2013 19:04

I put a few drops of peppermint oil in with oil I am 'pulling'. makes it easier to stomach. Get nice fresh breath as well as whiter teeth!

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 26/08/2013 20:02

That would make it even worse for me, I struggle with toothpaste because of the mintiness.

I might give it another try on my hair though.

AnneUulmelmahay · 26/08/2013 20:08

Where do you get coconut oil? Olland and Barret?

ArgumentativeAardvark · 26/08/2013 20:13

I got mine off amazon. Cheaper and you can buy bigger jars. I do oil pulling every day. Will give another go with my hair, it might be that I need to use a clarifying shampoo first.

I hope you ladies won't mind if i ask i really stupid question,

A couple of months ago off i popped down to the health food store to buy my coconut oil, lovely. but its solid and i mean 100% cannot get a spoon in it type of solid.

Do you melt it in the microwave each time and then let it solidify again?

dirtyface · 27/08/2013 11:23

its meant to be solid kate but not that solid! am surprised you cant get a spoon in it

you can melt it if you want, but tbh i just scoop it out with my fingers then let it melt in my hands iyswim. quicker than melting it each time

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 27/08/2013 12:50

I tried the pulling last night, with just a tiny bit of oil, my mouth just seemed to fill up with saliva really quickly. Tried a bit more oil, gagged, gave up!

Kate - mine's solid but I can scrape the top layer off with a teaspoon. In the recent hot weather it turned to liquid. Have you got somewhere a bit warmer you can put it?

valiumredhead · 27/08/2013 13:06

You need to start of with a tiny bit of oil and do a few mins at a time ime

dirtyface · 27/08/2013 15:56

yes i tried it earlier with about 2 teaspoons of coconut oil. was fine for about 5 mins then mouth seemed to fill up with saliva (yuk) and had to spit it out after about 10 mins

FoxPass · 27/08/2013 17:17

wet your hair, apply loads of conditioner then rinse and shampoo and condition as normal. That gets heaving oiling out my hair, even using a SLS-free shampoo.

KateSpade · 27/08/2013 17:56

The last time I tired to use it I spent 10 mins scraping flakes off the top & ended up nowhere, it's like an ice cube! I shall try putting it somewhere warm, maybe the kitchen will do!
