So I tried coconut oil?

I slathered my very thick, fairly long hair in the stuff. Sat feeling a bit smug about how lovely my hair was going to look for about 20 mins. So far so good. And then I tried to rinse it out.

How do you get it out? It's stuck in my hair in big greasy clumps. I've washed it twice, conditioned it, combed it. Rinsed for ages and ages. My hair is going to be so greasy tomorrow!

What did I do wrong? Confused

I use it overnight, I always find a wash with headandshoukders 2in1 gets rid of the greasy look in the morning

Themarriedwoman · 25/08/2013 03:52

Insulted butter?
I fucking hate that shitty stuff.

LadyMilfordHaven · 25/08/2013 07:44

Pulling the toxins. What bollocks

buss · 25/08/2013 08:51

what's oil pulling?

pongping · 25/08/2013 08:55

Wtf is insulted butter?

noddyholder · 25/08/2013 08:57

A friend of mine a dentist swears by it. Says all his older patients many Asian have v little gum disease with it. He now does it himself and recomends to all with gum problems and uses coconut oil but his patients use various oils. Coconut is antibacterial I think. It was common years ago in the east. The thick frothiness means bacteria etc get picked up whereas mouthwashes too thin to really do much. Never tried it myself not even on hair

LadyMilfordHaven · 25/08/2013 09:30

The minute I hear anyone saying toxins I get all bad science.

noddyholder · 25/08/2013 09:58

I don't know they are just toxic bacteria as opposed to good bacteria eg those in yoghurt. Most bacteria which cause damage are toxic My dentist friend is not alternative at all but swears by this.

Lazysuzanne · 25/08/2013 10:38

bacteria can be responsible for tooth decay and bad breath.
I tried the coconut oil mouthwash thing, it made me feel a bit sick :(

valiumredhead · 25/08/2013 12:56

It's the same as swallowing your tooth paste out mouth wash you don't do it because it's full of the gunk you've just brushed off your teeth!

valiumredhead · 25/08/2013 12:56

Or not out

valiumredhead · 25/08/2013 12:58

Coconut oil is also fab for your nails-rub some in last thing at night , it's great for cuticles and stimulates growth.

Mrsmorton · 25/08/2013 14:26

Yes, toxins is a Hmm word. Your digestive system deals with bacteria constantly. These "toxins" you swallow will do you no more harm than swallowing your saliva.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 25/08/2013 14:57

The dentist told my DCs not to spit out their toothpaste or they won't get enough fluoride.

bigbuttons · 25/08/2013 15:04

oil pulliung gives you very white teeth. I prefer using unrefined sesame ( when I remember to do it which isn't very often)

valiumredhead · 25/08/2013 15:40

It does big buttons I use sesame oil too lovely flavour!

Lazysuzanne · 25/08/2013 16:03

it wasn't the flavour of the oil that I found difficult, it was the sensation of having the oil in my mouth, don't know why I like to eat high fat food, tahini, peanut butter, chocolate

then again the though of eating pure fat like butter or olive oil does make me feel a bit queasyConfused

BerylStreep · 25/08/2013 18:09

It is supposed to read unsalted butter, although I think I prefer the idea of insulted butter!

I swear by shea butter. East African is wonderful stuff, West African cheaper, but good too. I use once a week overnight (sleep on a towel over pillow).

Also, I stopped using shampoos containing sodium laureth sulphate and that has made a huge difference to the condition of my hair.

Secretswitch · 26/08/2013 01:27

Oil pulling has whitened my teeth considerably. I have always used coconut oil as a conditioner on my hair until recently. My hair is apparently in some sort of hormone induced rebellion and has become a dry mass of frizzy fuzz. I think I am going to try macadamia nut oil next and see if that helps.

noddyholder · 26/08/2013 09:03

Secrets I noticed the person I know has very white teeth. How long have you been doing it?

mrsharrystyles · 26/08/2013 09:12

I use coconut oil on my hair and I love it. However, if you use conditioner etc with silicone in, you will have to use clarifying shampoo first so that the oil can penetrate the hair iyswim. If you don't do this you will be left with crispy, dry horrid hair.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 26/08/2013 09:12

I've never heard of this oil pulling, TBH the thought alone makes me feel like gagging, but it is interesting. How often do you need to do it?

saythatagain · 26/08/2013 09:13

Could some kind soul give a step by step of oil pulling please?
Apparatus, method, outcome, conclusion etc
