How often do you get your hair blow-dried?

I have long hair with a natural wave to it. I'm rubbish at blow drying but I do have some GHDs which I use when I can be bothered/have time. But most of the time it's not blow dried/straightened and although dh says it looks nice, I feel a bit scruffy.

Some of salons near me do a cheap-ish blow dry mid week with a junior. But I would feel a bit guilty doing this regularly. But my mum's generation wouldn't think twice about a weekly trip to the hairdresser.

How often do you have your hair blow dried?

I just had a Brazilian blow dry and it is a revelation. My once frizzy, messy, scruffy hair that required a good 45 mins of drying/BBHing/straightening is now, literally, wash and go. Air dried it looks fab. It's still wavy but SO much tidier, glossier and better groomed. I am an evangelical convert! It was £99 and will last 3-5 months, so I'm guessing is cheaper than weekly blow dries in a salon? And less hassle too.

I get a million flyaways, so for a special occasion I go to the hairdressers and get a blowdry. But I don't like them because I end up not washing my hair for a week to justify the cost.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 14/08/2013 23:38

Never, mine looks better when left to dry naturally.

candycrushhater · 14/08/2013 23:44

Never, unless I've an event like a wedding to go to.

However, I broke my foot a year ago and went for a weekly blowdry as I couldn't have a shower at home (only a bath with my leg dangling over the side), it was bliss! I have very thick, coarse hair and it was a real treat not to have to do it myself. My lovely hairdresser didn't even charge me for it - the juniors took it in turns to do it as part of their training Smile.

Tell me more about the Brazilian blow dry? I never get my hair blow dried even when I go to the hairdresser but might be tempted by this.

libertychick · 14/08/2013 23:52

If I could justify the expense I would happily get mine blow dried a couple of times a week - I go get it done if I am going out for a night or if I have an important work meeting/presentation...once the mortgage is paid I'll be one of those 1957 ladies!

DumSpiroSpero · 15/08/2013 00:26

Never - I even cut it myself last time, but I'm lucky to have thick, naturally wavy hair that looks OK even when bugger all is done to it.

What is a Brazilian blow dry? Sounds painful Wink !

MirandaWest · 15/08/2013 00:31

Mine gets blow dried when I have it cut so every couple of months or so.

JellyBelly10 · 15/08/2013 01:35

Last time I had my hair blow-dried at a salon was probably during the late 1980s. I have no immediate plans to do so during this decade but in 2028 I'll be 60 so may think about having it cut shorter at around that point. So in answer to OPs original question...about every 40 years! Grin

AntoinetteCosway · 15/08/2013 07:26

mydoor they wash your hair with a clarifying shampoo, rough dry it, paint on the mixture (which is essentially keratin-the same as your hair is made of), blow dry it, straighten it with v v v hot irons to seal it in and then 4 days later you wash your hair and new tresses are revealed! The hard bit is not washing it for 4 days and you're also not allowed to tie it up for that time.

It's not bad for your hair (in fact compared to dying it or regularly straightening it it's positively good for it) and it's bloody expensive but worth it in my opinion.

And it's not painful! Wink

InMyShreddies · 15/08/2013 08:07

Either I'm excellent at blowdrying my own hair or I just haven't found the right salon, as I always prefer it when I've done it myself Hmm

Didn't ladies used to go for weekly blowdries because having your own hair dryer is a relatively new luxury we enjoy?

I blowdry mine twice a week. Am a SAHM/work mostly from home, and cba doing it more often - I only wash it that often and it doesn't really look like it needs it more often, I think it's adjusted and produces less grease or something as I used to wash it every second day.

Tweet2tweet · 15/08/2013 08:21

I was tempted by Brazilian blow dry until I heard about the high amounts of formaldehyde in the formulation. 200 law suits taken against company in US because of damage to health. Don't know much more about it but that put me off.
I find combing through hair with a wide tooth comb, spraying with a good heat defence spray and then drying upside for roots and smoothing down standing upright gives good results.

cece · 15/08/2013 08:23

Never - not even when I have it cut. I never like how they do it.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 15/08/2013 08:26

My hairdresser does a great job cutting my hair, but even though I only book for a wet cut, she always wants to give it a "quick dry" at the end. She knows I don't like the smooth, shiny type of blowdry, so she puts stuff in and scrunches it up, looks nice for about 5 mins till I get out the door and then it goes all wild, to be honest I don't know which is worse, I'm going to tell her not to do it at all next time.

If it was possible to blow dry it (in less than 10 mins) and get the same look that I do when it is left to dry naturally I would do it, as it would be better than walking around with damp hair for two hours, but it doesn't seem to be possible.

StarlightMcKenzie · 15/08/2013 08:27

Never. I deliberately choose rainy days to get my hair cut so the hairdresser can't argue.

StarlightMcKenzie · 15/08/2013 08:27

And I never do it myself either, - aches my arm.

MrsBucketxx · 15/08/2013 08:32

Never only when its cut.

I dont normally like it anyway at any salon. I dont look like me.

missbopeep · 15/08/2013 09:07

Once every 10-12 weeks when it's cut.

sunnyshine · 15/08/2013 09:10

Never!! Isn't that what a hairdryer at homes for!!

AntoinetteCosway · 15/08/2013 09:25

I think there were issues with the earlier versions of Brazilian blow dries having high amounts of formaldehyde in but certainly in this country it's all v regulated. I asked my hairdresser and she said in the nano keratin system it's something like 200x less than the legal limit.

Jubelteen · 15/08/2013 09:29

I get a colour, cut and blow dry every 5 weeks like clockwork, never set foot in salon in between. My friend has very thick dry long hair and has a weekly wash and blow dry at the salon and a cut/colour every 6 weeks and rarely washes her hair at home, it always looks nice and clean. Mine would be stuck to my head with grease if I didn't wash it daily.
