My DH has had surgery today for pancreatic cancer, he is a bloody tropper! I'm just back from seeing him in recovery- he hasn't had any water yet but his poor lips looked so sore & dry. I want to buy him a lip balm to take in tomorrow, it's not going to drastically take the pain away but night make him feel a bit more human and less yucky. Can anyone recommended (beyond the classic Chapstick) a lip balm suitable for men? The more masculine it is the happier he'll be. Thanks s&b'ers

What's a tropper? Trooper!

Wishing your DH a speedy recovery.

My DH uses the boots own brand one in suitably boy blue packaging! Smile

WildThongsHeartString · 12/08/2013 23:51

Just plain Vaseline in the little blue tin. Can't beat it. Best of luck to you both btw.

AlwaysSleepingBeauty · 12/08/2013 23:52

I think Nivea do a 'for men' one that is matte. Nuxe Honey Dream is great and I think it says something about being fine for all the family/ men women and children or something on the box. My partner has also been persuaded to use L'occitane 100% Shea butter too because the tin isn't girly looking and the product is quite plain.

WhyIRayLiotta · 12/08/2013 23:53

What about a pot of Carmex
It's not girly looking at all - and is great on chapped lips.

Hope your DP is doing ok.

GW297 · 12/08/2013 23:57

I think Nivea, Clarins and Molton Brown do one specifically for men. Burts Bees is a good one. Would a stick be more convenient and potentially more hygienic than a pot?

AlfalfaMum · 13/08/2013 00:04

This one by La Roche-Posay is the best I've tried, and the packaging isn't feminine. It will sort out cracked lips quickly, you won't need to worry that he'll forget to use it all the time because once or twice will do the trick.

Maverick66 · 13/08/2013 00:05

I would second plain Vaseline. Perhaps dip some cotton wool in cooled boiled water and rub on your husbands lips for some moisture. Very best of luck and a speedy recovery to your husband:)

mignonette · 13/08/2013 00:16

Carmex lipbalm in either the classic yellow tin or the tube here It is slightly medicated, thick enough to stay on and isn't girly or scented. i have used it for thirty years now and DH wears it whilst working as a builder. He and I also used it on patients whilst nursing too.

Elsiequadrille · 13/08/2013 00:31

Dh uses carmex, it's ok but not much better than vaseline. I like Blistex intensive moisturiser best for dry lips (in a squeezy tube).

Though the best thing I've used for dry lips is the stuff I used to use when breastfeeding, the name escapes me.

Elsiequadrille · 13/08/2013 00:32

Wishing your dh a speedy recovery, also!

mignonette · 13/08/2013 00:37

Yes Blistex is good too. Neither of us like the smell of Vaseline and i have had patients complain that it sticks to their teeth and dried saliva on the corners of their mouth. I have found from a sickness point of view that Carmex has the least complaints. Hospitals use Vaseline because it is cheap. Not because it is the best. Lip salve falls in that category of non essentials they don't have to provide.

BikeRunSki · 13/08/2013 00:44

Lasinoh?
I like Blistex and Burt' s Bees

Twinklestein · 13/08/2013 00:58

You can't get more masculine than a bit of hinge grease.

ZacharyQuack · 13/08/2013 01:36

Lucas Pawpaw ointment is fantastic for sore lips and comes in a masculine red tube.

Elsiequadrille · 13/08/2013 02:02

Lansinoh, that's it! Though I don't suppose the packaging would fit he masculine criteria, but it does really work.

lizardqueenie · 13/08/2013 11:31

Thank you thank you for so many replies & kind wishes. I dropped off to sleep last night after posting that- just over emotional & fear that DD would wake up during the night helped!

Some great suggestions tho whoever said hinge grease- that would be right up my DH's street Wink Also- sorry on phone so can't name check- I do wonder if a stick / tube might be more hygienic & convenient for him - he has massive hands & I'm thinking about those vs one of those small pots plus he is wired up to all sorts to just might be easier. I'll pop into town on my way. Thanks again all Thanks

La Roche Posay Cicaplast can be used on the lips. It's healing and protecting.
Avene has a Cold Cream lip balm. The Cold Cream products are very nice - I haven't tried the lip balm though.

Personally, I find that Nuxe Reve de Miel is very good. It comes in a jar and in a bullet (like other balms and lipsticks). Both are very nice.

We also use Dermophil Indien lip balm here, which is absolutely amazing. My DH will not use anything else as this is the only thing that works for him - I use it during winters where other balms aren't enough. You should be able to find it online.

Eucerin Aquaphor is good and comes in a very ungirlie tube.

MyDaydream · 13/08/2013 12:32

When I had DS I had awful chapped lips and Burts Bees in the little stick was like magic. I was in so much pain and Burt and the bees really helped. DP is happy to use it too.

Pinupgirl · 13/08/2013 12:35

Petrol straight from the pipe.

Pinupgirl · 13/08/2013 13:01

Apologies op-wrong thread.

Billwoody · 13/08/2013 13:02

Carmex has new lime flavoured sticks (in Boots)

Allthingspretty · 13/08/2013 13:54

Marks and spencer pure lipbalm is what I use and what you can do is peel of the labels so that it is just a white pot.
