Facial hair removal - threading?

Hi! I am 37, white with pale (yet freckled) sensitive skin and a whole load of fine blonde downy hair on my upper lip and sides of my face (most of my cheeks really). I'm continuing my quest to find the best hair removal method for my facial hair.

I used to wax but this didn't really work as I need to do my whole face really or it looks like someone has mowed a strip through my cheek. And also a beautician once ripped skin off my cheeks. So that didn't really work.

Recently I've been using hair removal cream but this often aggravates my skin and I'm a bit wary of putting harsh chemicals on my skin.

I wondered if anyone with similar facial hair has tried threading. Does it work for fine, blonde hair? Any side effects?

I have fine but dark hair and have my eyebrows and upper lip threaded.

Pain is bearable for my eyebrows but I have to be in he right mood to have my lip done.

Also the beautician who does mine is very good, tried somewhere else as it was more convenient and it was so painful I only got 1 brow done.

FeetUpUntilChristmas · 11/08/2013 07:33

Oh and it still grows back the same as if they are plucked or waxed.

SpringyReframed · 11/08/2013 07:39

I use a Braun Silk Epil Exfoliator. It works well and isnt painful at all on the fluffy fine hair on my cheeks. I does hurt on the upper lip but it is worth the momentary pain for the speed and cheapness of the hair removal. That's what I always thing of when I am doing it!

I find I only need to do it once a week. I cleanse properly before and after and pop a thin layer of Sudocrem on afterwards just to be sure I dont cause any spots.

HollyMadison · 11/08/2013 08:23

I didn't realize threading was painful! Hmmm.

I like the idea of doing something myself. Springy does the Braun epilator pull the hair out at the roots or cut it off? I just looked at their website. Do you have the "bikini" product?

I used to get my upper lip threaded, but like FeetUp had to be in the right mood to face the beautician - it can sting a bit in that area.

Now I've got this little spring gadget which is just as effective and efficient and cost a couple of quid on Amazon.

HomelessAngua · 11/08/2013 10:27

I ended up buying a home laser which does appear to work, its a long term project but seems to work.

bawabod · 11/08/2013 11:22

SpringyReframed can I ask what model no of the epilator you are using. Thanks

SpringyReframed · 11/08/2013 12:26

bawabod I have this one.

Braun Silk-épil Xpressive Pro 7681 Wet & Dry Rechargeable Epilator.

I bought it off Amazon very recently to replace an old Phillips one I had for about 4 years. It is no better than the previous one but I wanted one that was rechargable so I could take it on holiday easily. I cant really see the point of the Wet & Dry I suppose some people would find it preferable to epilate their legs in the bath. I would say that as long as it says it can be used for the face then it will be fine.

LentilofDoom · 11/08/2013 12:29

I second the Amazon spring thing. I used to have threading done every couple of weeks, but with the spring I just have a bit of check every few days. It's saved me a huge amount of money, and the best thing is that if you're busy or on holiday you can still keep on top of it. The not having to wait for re-growth is great too.

When I first tried it I did think it was rubbish - I just needed to get the knack so I watched a tutorial on ebay.

LentilofDoom · 11/08/2013 12:32

When I first read about it on here I really did think it was too good to be true Grin

dollybird · 11/08/2013 12:34

I have a facial epilator and it was the best £15 I ever spent. I use it more for chin hair (light but thick). I find it quite satisfying. Much better than the cream I used to use every few days where I always felt like I had stubble. The make is Emjoi and I got it from Amazon

justabigdisco · 11/08/2013 13:02

Is this the spring thing?

LentilofDoom · 11/08/2013 13:04

Yes, that's it.

justabigdisco · 11/08/2013 13:09

Bought one!

LentilofDoom · 11/08/2013 13:54

Hurray! I honestly think it's the best thing I've ever bought Grin

bawabod · 11/08/2013 20:43

Thankyou SpringyReframed I shall have a look at that and the Emjoi advice very appreciated Smile

I have been having my eyebrows threaded for 10 years, IMO Indian women are awesome when it comes to eyebrow shape. I look younger and better groomed after a session.

BUT I had my upper lip done last year. The pain was intense (disclaimer I am a total pain wimp but fuck me I nearly punched the woman), immediately after my lip looked like I'd been punched. Three days later the area was still swollen and numb.

Would not recommend.

nonpractisingVirgin · 11/08/2013 21:10

I get my top lip threaded and it does hurt (my eyes always water!!) but it's really quick so worth it IMO

LentilofDoom · 11/08/2013 22:20

TSS I am also a great believer in professional eyebrow threading, and yes, when I started having any facial hair done, it hurt like hell. I just used to take a couple of paracetamol beforehand. It only hurt the first few times - it does sound like you are very sensitive!

I think the not having completely bare patches is the best thing about threading - with waxing or creme makeup sits differently, the light catches the skin differently, it's not so subtle.

Rummikub · 11/08/2013 22:24

That spring thing looks a bit scary! Is it easy to master? And to shape brows? I usually get my eye brows threaded and it varies on who is doing it. Some are so good that it's almost pain free, others hurt like hell! I try to get the same lady in super drug when I go!

LentilofDoom · 12/08/2013 09:22

Rumm The spring can't be used on brows, it's not precise enough. It took me about half an hour to get the hang of various ways of bending it for different bits of the face. You Tube was handy.

Rummikub · 12/08/2013 11:30

Oh ok that's lentilo you tube is great for tutorials. There are some on threading that I watched as I didn't understand how it worked!

Wahla · 12/08/2013 11:43

Springy thing is fab - I use mine after a hot bath and stick my tongue under my upper lip to stretch it out and the pain is bearable.

HollyMadison · 13/08/2013 06:55

Thanks everyone for your comments. It sounds like threading is not for me - if people find upper lip painful I think I will struggle with having my cheeks done. I'm going to buy a springy thing and look into the prices of epilators too.

Shrugged · 13/08/2013 11:16

Can I ask what kind of facial hair the spring thing would work on? I have dark, bristly hair to each side of my chin and upper neck, but it's so visible I can't let it grow at all, because it gives me an obvious five o clock shadow. Would the spring thing wrk on that?

I tried an epilator years ago, but found it too painful for minimal results.
