Help me find the warmest coat ever!

Last winter I felt freezing ALL.THE.TIME.

I keep reading about coats like the Cuckmere but I think I'd look like the Michelin man! I'm 5ft 1 and a size 10 but very round with almost no waist at all. I'm feeling desperate though and dreading the cold weather - we walk to and from school so it's really important I find something warm. Help please!

The warmest coat I ever had was a proper sheepskin one. I'm small too and probably looked ridiculous but I was NEVER cold, even through a harsh snowy winter at university where I had to walk everywhere!

I'm 5ft 2 and an 8/10 and the North Face arctic Parka doesn't make me look ridiculous. Or not that anyone has said to my face!

snowlie · 10/08/2013 19:45

Northface Parka - warmest and driest. I have another down filled coat from uniqlo which doesn't touch the sides on a cold winter's day.

Branleuse · 10/08/2013 19:56

I second a sheepskin.
I got one from a charity shop last year for £15. Its slightly fitted too so not boxy like some of them. I swear its the first winter ive actually not completely hated. I was toasty in the snow with decent boots and my sheepskin.

I've got an ancient Toggi puffa jacket and alway feel like I'm wrapped in a duvet - everyone comments that I look warm as toast in it! It's filled with proper eiderdown and comes up lovely after it's annual wash and tumble dry with tennis balls.

KnittedWaffle · 10/08/2013 20:26

Those of you with a north face arctic parka how is the sizing?
I've had one in my amazon basket for ages and am deciding whether to get it this weekend!

I'm a 10-12, 5'9 with big boobs - was thinking a medium?

dottyaboutstripes · 10/08/2013 20:52

Ooh am quite liking the look of the North Face one, though I'm still not convinced anything properly warm can look stylish or beautiful! Am very tempted to try

I hear ya, I get so feel the cold.

The thing about the Aigle Cuckmere is that it has a belt, and also it's only 70/30 duck down.

Last year I bought myself a Marmot 'Montreaux' coat - they're 650 fill pure goose down. I've never ever been so warm. They're lighter & less bulky than the Aigle. Pic here

The ghastly fake fur comes off, so does the hood.

Also the seams are slanted rather than straight across (as others are) which is more flattering.

Patagonia is another good brand - they have the 'Down with it' & 'Downtown Loft' Parka which are both 600 fill. They're quite streamlined.

North Face are 550 fill - ok but not quite as warm.

If you hurry - if you can buy last winter's stock at sale price. Come the Autumn they will sell out quite quickly, & then only the new season full price will be available.

Artic parka best ever coat cost a bit but lasted 5 winters and still going strong

Twinklestein · 10/08/2013 20:58

Here's a picture of the Marmot coat on - so you can see better what it looks like.

littlemissnormal · 10/08/2013 21:07

I've got a north face, is super warm.

I am 10-12 with a hefty chest so a medium is fine on me but I am also a short arse so you may find it too short in the body.

Mominatrix · 10/08/2013 21:14

Canada Goose - made for arctic exploration. Pricey, but worth every pence.

ilovebabytv · 10/08/2013 21:20

I have a vintage real fur coat and i can safely say it is the warmest coat i own by far. And its beautiful.

snowlie · 11/08/2013 12:12

Think the big advantage with the Arctic Parka is that it is completely waterproof, not just water resistant and so often in the UK it is cold and wet. Op I would try a small and a medium and send the one you don't want back. But I think a small would be more flattering...depends if you want to fit a few layers underneath for the really bitter days.

WeGotTheKrunk · 11/08/2013 13:05

P got me a khujo ski jacket from tk maxx a few years ago, it's fur lined and has a hood that zips over the lower half of my face if I do it up all the way (can't emphasise how toasty this is). It's amazing and it looks cute on. Worth a look in tk maxx for 'extreme wear' like ski / snowboard jackets OP?

Notonaschoolnight · 11/08/2013 13:10

Northface arctic parka - I'm 5'7 14-16 41" chest got the xl in khaki was too big lrg fine and I'm not someone who wears close fitting clothes there really was ample room, hope that helps

Spookey80 · 11/08/2013 16:44

Bump me too.

HeyLuciani · 11/08/2013 17:37

I'm 5ft 2 and size 8-10, but quite busty so got both small and medium North Face Arctic parka to try on. Decided to keep the medium - the small fitted, but was a bit too snug, flattened my bust too much and there wasn't much room to wear with a thicker top underneath. Definitely recommend it - I am always cold and it's the only coat I've ever felt warm in!

starfleet · 12/08/2013 15:02

Woolrich Arctic parka. Best coat I've ever had. Extremely warm and waterproof.

snowlie · 12/08/2013 17:20

Something weird going on when you search woolrich - looks like maybe some fakes are lying around.
