Soho House wedding reception...what to wear?!!!

mousiemousie · 11/06/2006 19:28

DD's godfather has kindly invited us to his wedding and the reception is at Soho House - I know this venue is a bit media trendy and famous for Sadie Frost's child swallowing an extacy tablet there!

Am panicking over what to wear. The bride is an international fashion buyer. I am from the sticks. I am 10 years older than the bride to boot. Considerably poorer. I am more of a size 14 than a size 4. Do I have to wear a hat?!! I think I need to resign myself to the fact that however hard I try I will be frumpsville compared to most of the guests!

god this is a mare
id say NO hat

megglevache · 11/06/2006 21:17

I think you're going to be surprised at how bad some of these people look. Grin mark my words.

Cod · 11/06/2006 21:18

yes rememebr the thread on bad fashion icons>

megglevache · 11/06/2006 21:20

Seriously -I used to work as a designer and whenever I go to dos put on by old friends I am scared stiff-then I remember how half of them looked like a dog's breakfast at the last gathering and I feel a bit more confident , he-he.

Pruni · 11/06/2006 21:21

Oh god yes - I once went to a party that Jerry Hall, Michael Douglas, Bono etc were at, and lots of filmy people, and you have never seen a room like it - dog's breakfasts, the lot. JH in particular was wearing a lampshade, I think.

megglevache · 11/06/2006 21:21

God, mousie is going to love us!

Pruni · 11/06/2006 21:25

As an aside, have remembered at same party - Chris de Burgh wearing dinner suit minus tux jacket, which was replaced by an eighties leather number with piping and sleeves rolled up.
Classy.

WideWebWitch · 11/06/2006 21:29

No hat, for sure. I think you should go for something classic and classy (mind you, don't listen to me, cod reckons I dress like a Greek widow and she is probably right!) and tell anyone who asks that it's 'vintage.'

megglevache · 11/06/2006 21:30

Oh yes very Jackie O. Wear the most mahoosive sunglasses you can find-you'll fit right in.

robinpud · 11/06/2006 21:30

Am not a style icon but my advice would be to pick something that suits your colouring and your build . If you can find something you love, chances are you will feel confident in it. I guess all the "celebs" will be too busy ogling each other and the bride. Is budget a problem? Can you use a personal shopper at a department store or even M and S to encourage you to try a few things on.. they are normally free.

Enid · 12/06/2006 10:22

something that is good for snorting coke in

Carmenere · 12/06/2006 10:39

No hat, a really good haircut, really smart shoes and bag and a simple, elegant dress.

kitegirl · 12/06/2006 10:51

dress plus FABULOUS shoes. Pick up a pretty summer dress from high street and invest in a sexy pair of sandals. No hat.

MrsBadger · 12/06/2006 10:55

echo Carmenere - get your hair done - even a professional blowdry makes all the difference.

and don't wear anything obviously from Coast or similar - was at a mildly fashionable ball in London on Friday and saw seven girls in the same Coast bustier; also overheard a great deal of derision about 'High Street ballgowns' - I cringed in my Monsoon dress but it's five years old so no-one recognised it.

You may get away with a plain elegant dress from New Look or somewhere (try Dorothy Perkins for Galaxy ripoffs if they suit you) if it fits you perfectly - worth the money getting it altered if you have a good local seamstress.
Add one stunning accessory (bag, shoes or brooch) and keep the rest understated.

Bink · 12/06/2006 10:59

Something to remember, and trust me I know, is that people who are members of Soho House are themselves some 15 years older than the slips of bright young things they were when they first joined. SH is full of people looking just a little bit, mmm, raddled is too mean a word, but you know what I mean - trying too hard (and it showing) is probably a more accurate description. (Joanna Clore off Green Wing, if you need a visual aid.)

So if you do simple and chic you will look lovely. No hat, by the way.
