Non ironers - how bad do you look in the summer?

I am a selective ironer - I fold straight out of the dryer etc but if anything is line dryed, unless its spun on 600 in the machine it needs ironing, I am thinkinf kids cotton Polo shirts, my t shirts and tops and cropped cotton trousers

Do you just look like a walking Per Una crinkle skirts?

Anything cotton needs an iron. I think the only things I don't iron are jeans and thick jumpers. Clothes look so much better ironed but I know this is an unpopular view on MN!

EliotNess · 13/07/2013 08:32

i know dexter

  • links arms8 I quite like fiddling around with my clothes, ironning, doing on a gentle wash etc

I dry all my easily creased clothes on the washing line, even if it means they're out there for a day or two. Then it's straight onto hangers.

I've just bought a nice linen t-shirt from Zara, it's come up fine after being line dried.

EliotNess · 13/07/2013 08:40

are you SURE meg? really? head tilty

My dp and i dont iron much just my work clothes really dp can looked very creasely but we dont care he tops his style off with trainers with un tied laces

most stuff is dried in tumble or washing line dried so gets folded so as today im wearing a summer dress that been hang up since last summer that had its tags on still

YoniTime · 13/07/2013 08:51

The linen top was knitted wasn't it. Knitted materials can look fine without ironing. But woven ones seldom do, unless you're going for the wrinkly look.

Nagoo · 13/07/2013 09:00

I have to iron things now I'm line drying them

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 13/07/2013 09:09

Line drying is fine for polo shirts, tee shirts, anything that has a bit of stretch in it. The only things we iron are cotton or linen woven items, everything else just comes off the line and is flat. I give everything a sharp flick before pegging, that gets rid of most of the creases, the wind doe the rest. Spin everything at 1200.

MousyMouse · 13/07/2013 09:14

strategic drying is your friend as is not buying linen trousers clothes that don't crinkle as much.
these days it's khaki trouser/shorts or jeans + cotton t-shirts. they are not creased and I don't waste time ironing

noddyholder · 13/07/2013 09:20

I never iron either I wash don't spin teh life out of tehm and put on hangers on a rail outside. I would iron a 100% cotton top of I had to but no never anything else. No one has ever commented and we look fine.

dexter73 · 13/07/2013 09:23

Would someone comment though? One of my dh's friends never irons anything and looks a right scruff but I would never dream of commenting on it to him as it is none of my business how he chooses to dress.

MrsHoarder · 13/07/2013 09:31

I'm living in cotton jersey dresses which look fine or a slightly "textured" fatface dress which would look odd if ironed.

Everything is line dried, we're near the coast so generally it gets a helpful breeze too.

noddyholder · 13/07/2013 09:35

My mates would comment! My ds is mega scruffy regardless. I really look after all my clothes re washing etc but I hate the look of ironed unless you have to for work.

CursiveLetters · 13/07/2013 09:37

OK how does one do the strategic drying mentioned above?

noddyholder · 13/07/2013 09:42

Don't over fill machine and high spin ruins clothes and leaves them creased take stuff straight out and put on hangers and in summer I dry it outside and in winter I put on a rail in a warm room. T shirts I can spot which ones will crease so don't buy them! I don't work somewhere where I wear suits or shirts etc and I wear a lot of jersey. One off items like expensive dresses etc I dry clean anyway

MousyMouse · 13/07/2013 10:00

strategic drying: everything noddyholder says plus pulling clothes gently into shape before hanging. shirts on hangers. jeans/trousers only get a short spin so that the creases fall out whilst drying. if using pegs is unavoidable use places where marks would be (nearly) invisible.
also I smooth the clothes with my hands when folding before putting them away.

dexter73 · 13/07/2013 10:02

I don't iron any of my dd's clothes as they all end up on the floor of her room when she is deciding what to wear! Would be a total waste of my time (also she is 16 and can iron her own clothes if she is that bothered!).

AnythingNotEverything · 13/07/2013 10:05

I only iron linen trousers and bed linen. I don't mind the small amount of extra work in summer when the washing dries so quickly.

noddyholder · 13/07/2013 10:09

I love crumply bed linen

dexter73 · 13/07/2013 10:15

I have never ironed bed clothes. Can't see the point.

AnnoyingOrange · 13/07/2013 10:20

I buy M &S ultimate non iron school shirts for the dc

Mainly stretchy tops/dresses for me

Only items that need ironing are work shirts for dh

littlemisswise · 13/07/2013 10:22

I iron practically everything. I hate unironed clothes, and bed linen but that's just me!

missbopeep · 13/07/2013 10:24

Just get your irons out you lazy so and so's :)

How can you NOT iron cotton and linen?

NoComet · 13/07/2013 10:28

Some what crumpled as my cropped trousers really do need ironing Blush

noddyholder · 13/07/2013 10:30

British people always stand out on holiday with their new and ironed clothes think thats why I hate it!
