Non ironers - how bad do you look in the summer?

I am a selective ironer - I fold straight out of the dryer etc but if anything is line dryed, unless its spun on 600 in the machine it needs ironing, I am thinkinf kids cotton Polo shirts, my t shirts and tops and cropped cotton trousers

Do you just look like a walking Per Una crinkle skirts?

I have recently converted from a being non-ironer to a selective ironer
I hate to say it, it really does make a difference

although shaking and hanging stuff properly massively reduces the amount of time it take to iron stuff, so it's still worth doing.

FaddyPeony · 13/07/2013 14:49

Dh irons his own work shirts. I iron my tops and t shirts on an ad hoc basis just so I don't look a total scruff.iron almost nothing of the baby's- that would be mad! I never iron bed linen except if mil is staying. My mother irons everything but I just don't see the need for overironing.I'm also really bad at it!

FaddyPeony · 13/07/2013 14:51

I hear knackered new mothers talking about all the ironing they have to do and I just want to go over there and throw the iron out the window - madness

Moxiegirl · 13/07/2013 14:54

I iron nothing. If a top looks a bit creased I blast myself with the hair dryer and I'm sorted! Grin

missbopeep · 13/07/2013 15:19

Noddy - Worth a room that pleases me when I walk into it. (It was tongue in cheek if you hadn't twigged.)

I don't honestly get this idea that you don't need to bother as long as no one else sees it.

Does that apply to ALL the house? Do you only clean the bits that are on 'show' to visitors?

I shake, line dry and iron. I didn't iron much when the kids were younger- didn't have time. But now I do I can say it looks much nicer and feels nicer too.

noddyholder · 13/07/2013 15:26

Ironed doesn't equal clean though. I clean the whole house when it suits me. I renovate/redesign houses for a living and believe it or not use crumpled linen in all the bedrooms and people always ask where its from! Its an individual thing though if you like it and it feels nice you should do it.

WalkingRaces · 13/07/2013 15:29

"Ironing?" [baffled]

All my clothes are creased. In fact, I seek out the most creasable clothes I can find. Unless it gives good crinkle, I'm not wearing it. Even shoes.

By comparison, when wearing my crumpled threads, my face looks smooth and unwrinkled.

[total fucking genius]

Onetwo34 · 13/07/2013 15:36

I never iron a thing. Yeah I look terribly creased but I am thin and gorgeous so it kind of evens out.

RonaldMcDonald · 13/07/2013 15:38

I don't mind ironing.

Ladies of mumsnet, iron your white linen trousers.

RonaldMcDonald · 13/07/2013 15:42

noddy

We have the same bed linen

Velvetbee · 13/07/2013 15:46

I probably look terrible but life is short and precious and I'm not spending mine ironing.

noddyholder · 13/07/2013 16:08

Ronald it is the king of the duvet covers Grin. And whoever said crumpled clothes makes face look smooth GENIUS

CeeceeBloomingdale · 13/07/2013 16:51

Crikey, I iron everything, I don't mind ironing actually. When we were selling our house I changed the bedding every time to a freshly ironed on Shock

missbopeep · 13/07/2013 16:51

No of course ironed doesn't equal clean- who would iron dirty sheets!
But the point people were making was why iron when only I see the room. So the question I posed was, do you clean or MAKE ATTRACTIVE- only the rooms visitors see?

Cos to my mind there's no point cleaning your bedroom if the bedding is crumpled. Bit like putting on your make up or washing your face, but not bothering to comb your hair ( especially if no one else sees it that day Grin)

But I take the point that some specialist bedding is supposed to have the crumpled look.

noddyholder · 13/07/2013 16:56

To your mind yes but to me I love a crumply linen look. Its personal taste not anything more. Even if I had a woman to iron I wouldn't want her to touch my linen because I don't like it.

noddyholder · 13/07/2013 16:57

Don;t comb hair much either Grin

BeQuicksieorBeDead · 13/07/2013 17:02

I don't own an iron either, haven't had one for about fifteen years. If you love ironing, great, your clothes probably do look nicer than mine, but I can't think of anything less fulfilling to do with my time. I don't think on my death bed I will be lamenting the time I spent not ironing, or be too bothered by my wrinkly pillowcase.

Aetae · 13/07/2013 17:14

I iron approximately once a year, most of the time I really can't be bothered.

Work and special occasion clothes get dry cleaned or are jersey/knitwear and don't need ironing. DH is on his own re ironing his clothes, I don't see why I should do it for him.

What else needs ironing (ok, I get that I could choose to iron sheets but I don't, life's too short)? When I'm pottering about on the weekend I really don't care what people at the supermarket or wherever think of my unironed summer dresses etc - given what half of them choose to wear I'd say lack of ironing is a very small sin.

noddyholder · 13/07/2013 17:20

I can't believe people iron their partners stuff My dp sorts his work stuff himself

dexter73 · 13/07/2013 17:37

I haven't found life too short to fit in a couple of hours ironing and still do lots of fun stuff as well. What you really mean is I hate ironing so use the excuse that I am doing something more interesting instead so I don't sound lazyWink!

noddyholder · 13/07/2013 17:39

I don't not iron becasue I am lazy btw! Don't like the look of it and feel its unnecessary for me. My house is fairly immaculate in many ways!

dexter73 · 13/07/2013 17:41

I'm not saying you are lazy but that you don't want to sound lazy because you don't do any ironing.

dexter73 · 13/07/2013 17:46

If there is a thread on ironing, people who don't iron seem to feel the need to justify themselves by saying that life is too short and they are doing something far more interesting instead. I just don't think this is true and I don't think anyone needs to feel they should justify why they don't iron. As you said, you don't like the feel of it and find it unnecessary. That is honest, you aren't making out you are too busy helping orphans to find the time to do a bit of ironing.

noddyholder · 13/07/2013 17:47

I am not bothered about that Who would know? Mind you I don't ever talk about ironing in my everyday life!

noddyholder · 13/07/2013 17:48

No no helping orphans when I could be ironing or anything else worthy. I love a bit of idleness and see it as a virtue to be able to chill and not constantly busy myself.
