Okay, fat people, what are you wearing in this heat??

People, I am fat, and hardly any of my summer clothes fit me. I need to keep my arms and lower legs covered (psoriasis, varicose veins). I am wearing jeans and long sleeved shirts, and I feel huge, hot and horrible. What can I wear??? I have ordered a couple of maxi dresses and shrugs to cover my arms. What else? I went in Evans the other day but the huge display of polyester smocks was just depressing.

Meanwhile I am digging out my zoe harcombe book in hopes of a quick detox but know it will not work miracles.

Any advice welcome!

Dresses with thin tshirts under or over, either knee length or maxi, nothing on my legs. Talc for the chub rub.
Billowey tops with longish shorts (not hot pants).
Knee length skirts with t shirts or vests tucked in.
Jersey dresses with bare legs.
Tea dresses with bare legs.
My legs are one of the only bits of I feel comfortable getting out but of you don't then thin leggins in bright colours look lovely under dresses skirts and tunics.
Try not to worry too much about what other people think and wear what makes you feel comfortable and confident and wear it with attitude.

I'm a size 18, today I wore a pair of knee length shorts and my tanking top, plus a vets top over when not in the garden and flip flops.
For work I either wear my tailored trousers with smart wedge sandals and a sort blouse or lond skirts with matching tops.

Fir casual I have many pairs of linen trousers with smart fitted vest and normal t shirt style tops and a couple of knee length dresses.

Never worn leggings and don't seem to be troubled by thigh rub. I find fitted better than floaty as they just hang off my oversized bust and look like tents.

Feet always sandals in the summer, flip flops, flats or wedges.

Onesleeptillwembley · 07/07/2013 23:13

Before I say this - I'm a chubber. Today we say loads of fat women in maxi dresses. Not one looked good, in fact almost all looked a bloody mess. It really is a joke now, fatties and maxi dresses.

BoulevardOfBrokenSleep · 07/07/2013 23:14

Just wear a cotton sundress, whatever you're comfortable in. You're seriously going to sweat it out in jeans so as not to offend the eyes of random passers-by?

I myself am fat and eczema-y; I'm unlikely to get much thinner and I'm very unlikely to get less eczema-y, so you've just got to live your life, right?
So just wear what you want. Personally, I'd draw the line at walking down the high street in a string bikini... but if that's what floats your boat Grin

aturtlenamedmack · 07/07/2013 23:23

It doesn't really matter if you think they look good, if they felt confident and comfortable then fuck flattering, they should wear what they want.
Sticking to a strict set of prescriptive rules about how fat people should dress to flatter or hide their figure is bullshit, fat people should be able to experiment and enjoy fashion just as much as everyone else can. It shouldn't be about looking as inoffensive as possible to everyone else.
If they liked it, liked themselves in it, felt good, were cool and comfortable then why shouldn't they wear it. Be it a maxi or a mini.

OneLittleLady · 07/07/2013 23:49

Maxi skirts with comfort shorts underneath, vest tops, cardigans (i burn ridiculously easily) skinnies with vests and sandals, skirts with leggings, loose cut t-shirts and flip flops. Basically, whatever I want. As long as I'm comfortable and I'm not exposing myself indecently, I do not give a rats arse about what other people think of what I'm wearing. The only thing I don't wear is shorts of any kind as they just don't suit me.

trinity0097 · 08/07/2013 05:12

Always wear a large panty liner in hot weather to help avoid the stand up and leave a sweaty mark situation!

I always wear cycle shorts under skirts/dresses, I find it cooler than no shots as I stay dry and have less skin on skin to get hot!

katydid02 · 08/07/2013 07:30

Thanks onesleep, so much for me finally plucking up the courage to wear a dress. They are going to the charity shop this morning.

aturtlenamedmack · 08/07/2013 07:37

katy
I really hope you're kidding :(
Don't let anyone prevent you from wearing exactly what you want because they are the self appointed fashion police.
If you like it, wear it and think about all the positive messages on this thread rather that the negative.

OneLittleLady · 08/07/2013 07:59

I too hope you're kidding katy don't be put of something you like because of someone else.

Wishfulmakeupping · 08/07/2013 08:09

selks love that dress do their sizes tend to be true to size?

BoysAreLikeDogs · 08/07/2013 08:47

Jeez Katy take no notice. Wear what you like. I say this as a fat shortarse. My fave dresses are calf length on normal peeps, ankle length on moi. I wear leggings, crop ones, any above the knee roll up my legs bizarrely Hmm

valiumredhead · 08/07/2013 08:53

one sleep shame they didn't realise that they were actually on a fashion catwalk instead of out living their lives and trying to keep coolHmm

valiumredhead · 08/07/2013 08:56

Katy why are you worried about some twat's opinion on the internet of all places?! I'd cover myself in marmite atm if it meant I was coolGrin

valiumredhead · 08/07/2013 08:56

Someone's

Onesleeptillwembley · 08/07/2013 09:00

Oh grow up. My opinion is just as valid as anyone's. if you don't like, fair enough, but don't get all PA about it. If you like it wear it. Personally I'd rather realise something looked ridiculous, god knows we've all made fashion mistakes. But I stick to my belief, no matter how many patronising people say 'wear what you like, oh, it's lovely' larger women and maxi dresses look a bloody mess.

RoooneyMara · 08/07/2013 09:06

I'm finding it difficult being post-pregnancy, I feel very uncomfortable exposing anything tbh. Combine that with breastfeeding access and it's a bit tricky.

Anyway what I'd recommend, (for those not breastfeeding) is a nice, thin white or cream cotton shirt, maybe with a bit of gathering/shaping etc. and some cotton shorts - I've got some great stretchy loose fitting jersey ones, with a turn up, that go to the knee - they are maternity ones and have a huge stretchy top bit. I'm not pg any more but I adore them.

Think they were from H&M or topshop.

Forget maxi dresses unless you really like them, IMHO they don't suit ANY shaped person particularly well, but I can see their appeal. What I mean is don't feel you have to wear one to look acceptable.

RoooneyMara · 08/07/2013 09:08

But Onelseep the way you phrased it is enough to kill anyone's confidence. It was unnecessary.

I don't like them either but I'd never say 'I saw a group of fat birds and they all looked shit'

I mean, that's just horrible

valiumredhead · 08/07/2013 09:26

All larger people look a mess in maxi dresses? How on earth can you speak for every single person?Confused

I have a friend who is larger and looks amazing in leggings and long tops, put me in the same outfit and if look ridiculous. Completely depends on the person.

valiumredhead · 08/07/2013 09:26

I'd not if

Onesleeptillwembley · 08/07/2013 09:34

Ok, I'll go with that, maybe not all, but having seen hundreds if not thousands over the past couple of years, maybe around 50 yesterday, no exaggeration, I was in a very busy seaside place, not one looked flattering. The majority did look awful. One woman was being pointed at and sniggered at as she walked along, which was shitty. But maybe if someone did say to her that no, it didn't suit her, that wouldn't have happened. I saw women of similar shapes and sizes in other dresses, looking between awful and fantastic. There's suddenly a lot of dresses out there that look good if you're bigger. It was actually a conversation we had yesterday, funnily enough, after seeing the woman being laughed at.

Onesleeptillwembley · 08/07/2013 09:37

And I do agree, leggings and a top can look great, whatever your size.

RoooneyMara · 08/07/2013 09:38

Victim blaming much?

Maybe, just maybe she LIKED the dress and didn't care if it suited her?

Maybe the person laughing at her was just an unkind bastard?

Tweasels · 08/07/2013 09:40

You honestly think the woman wearing the dress is in the wrong and not the people laughing at her?

Maxi dresses look fine on people of all sizes, please no one feel put off by this bullshit.

Onesleeptillwembley · 08/07/2013 09:40

Maybe she did, the pointing and laughing was completely shitty, but the fact was it did look terrible, surely nobody wants to look an utter mess, no matter how much they like a dress.
