What do I wear to an interview for a lecturing post at a college?

I realise I need not wear a suit! I would not want to anyway - I am too fat for suits (size 20 - feel size 40)

Would stone coloured trousers and a florally top in blues with the stone colour in, too, be okay? Tan sandals?

Should I rather wear black trousers, a top that has some black in it and black court shoes?

I am so keen for this job and really want to create that impression.

Help please!

I think the first outfit sounds far too casual.

Better to be a bit overdressed I think. I interview a lot (in a similar setting) and always note clothes and whether people have made an effort - shows they care.

I sometimes lecture postgrads and will always go smart - trousers and jacket though, rather than a proper suit.

lebasi · 06/07/2013 09:02

Imho black is a bit bland and I would go for stone trousers combo - particularly in this heat! As long as you look as though you care about your appearance and have made an effort, it doesn't really matter (as you have already said, there is no expectation to wear a suit) so wear whatever makes you feel most comfortable and confident! Good luck with the interview.

I think stone trousers sound too casual.

Good luck.

aftermay · 06/07/2013 11:03

I'd go for a plain colour top. Nothing patterned or flowery.

tethersend · 06/07/2013 11:36

What's your subject?

I'll be honest, the outfit you describe sounds awful.

Will have a look. Would you wear a dress? Or do you want trousers?

Alliwantisaroomsomewhere · 06/07/2013 11:42

Thanks for the replies - especially Tethersend's Grin!

I am a full apple shape and find it very difficult to choose a dress that suits me without making look worse than i do.

Happy to consider suggestions, though!

The subject is Early Years Education and Care. I am mid 40s, apple shaped and pretty boring in the way I dress Smile.

How about

this

this

I promise I don't work for MP Grin

tethersend · 06/07/2013 11:52

Oh yes, you HAVE to get that job. Are you in a school at the moment?

this would look great with mid heeled sandals and a pendant necklace...

Alliwantisaroomsomewhere · 06/07/2013 11:56

Love the third one but that is out of my budget because I would need to get shoes to wear with it and my hair needs doing. (First one is GORGEOUS but too dressy, I think and I would be worried that the green one would make me look like a blimp?)

No, never taught before. This is for a further education post and I am currently a childminder - desparately in need of making a change!

going to have a look at the latest link (thanks for your time and effort, btw!)

Alliwantisaroomsomewhere · 06/07/2013 12:10

OMG. Bargain.

Alliwantisaroomsomewhere · 06/07/2013 12:22

Bought it! Thousand thanks, Tethersend.

Your first post made me laugh! I even told DH about it Grin. Thanks so much for taking the time to help me find that dress. I would never have considered looking at House of Fraser or John Lewis because I assumed those stores would be too expensive for me.

I will give an update when it arrives and when I have tried it on!

I bought that dress too, thanks to this thread. I'm on the hunt for a graduation dress and so far have bought and returned 13.

If it doesn't suit me Teathersend please can I call on you? Grin

tethersend · 06/07/2013 22:36

By all means Grin

Alliwantisaroomsomewhere · 06/07/2013 23:50

Gypsy, the dress is gorgeous, isn't it? I reckon I will need some decent knickers under it and maybe a (eeeek!!) a "slip" or "petticoat" of some kind. What the fuck do you call those things nowadays that smooth out your FROCK! HAHA!!

GypsyFloss · 07/07/2013 07:46

I've got 2 other Phase eight dress that need exact that...a slip...to stop them from riding up. I wear old satin slip shaped shaped nightie from M&S with the adjustable straps as long as possible to gain overall length.

Thanks Teathersend :) My gown is dark blue with a lighter blue and gold hood so I've been trying to find something that doesn't clash with that. As it is in Oct also want to be able to wear black opaques or sheer tights depending on the weather. I've had all sorts of dresses from the blue Whistles Bella to orange Michael Kors ones is the blue with doves P8 one recently linked.4 others are going to back to Me & Em tomorrow. Fussy ? Me? Grin

Alliwantisaroomsomewhere · 08/07/2013 16:30

The Dress has arrived and I bloody love it! I def need some smoothing underwear, but that would be easy enough to get at my local shopping mall.

Thanks, Tethersend! I really really love the dress :)
