what lurks beneath your maxi dress?

I'ma bit on the err, chunky side and find dresses and skirts uncomfortable unless I wear leggings/tights underneath them. I'm considering investing in a couple of maxi dresses for the summer but I just wanted to check, it acceptable to wear leggings under a maxi dress? Or is that weird?

you could buy you may be hot! what about cycle shorts?

Trills · 02/06/2013 20:24

It's acceptable to wear anything you like under your maxi dress if nobody can see it.

I find a long dress (a smart one, not a beach one) with leggings underneath a cunning solution to a potentially chilly wedding.

(check for obvious waistline lumps/bulges where the top of the leggings dig in)

orangeandemons · 02/06/2013 20:27

Well, on my day out today, what lurked beneath maxi dresses and were also clearly visible were:

Grey grubby bra straps everywhere
Backless dresses with grey grubby bra fastenings showing

Everywhere! Really put me off my picnic...

daisydoodoo · 02/06/2013 20:28

You can buy comfort shorts in evans. They are like opaque tights but stop mid thigh.

Annoyingly as a size 24/26 I never had chafing but as a 14/12 I do occasionally.

Apparently using one of those stick deodorants on your inner thighs help as well. It must be the stick type not roll on or spray.

HariboAndWine · 02/06/2013 20:28

Are you talking about thigh chafing? I have a similar issue so wear some sucky in knickers which look like cycling shorts. Kills two birds with one stone, sorting out lumpy bits too. If you're a bargain hunter like me, I got mine from primark for £6.

starfishmummy · 02/06/2013 20:30

I haven't done the leggings under a summer maxi but I do sometimes wear a cullotte slip - so basically its an underskirt with legs. I bought them years ago from one of this old lady catalogues and need to get some more!

ThePathanKhansAmnesiac · 02/06/2013 20:42

At the moment, really hairy muff, and yeti-betty legs. Grin

Vegehamwidge · 02/06/2013 20:42

Where did you buy those starfish?

I suffer from thigh chafing and short leggings helps but they're are also too hot to wear when the weather is hot.

Vegehamwidge · 02/06/2013 20:43

No underwear ThePathan?

RiotsNotDiets · 02/06/2013 20:48

Haha Pathan that sounds about right!

How comfy are the tummy holding in things? Don't they get a bit uncomfortable sitting down/eating?

those cullotte things sound good Starfish where did you get them?

Vege and Riots I have had mine for ages and can't remember exactly where but google tells me that Witt have similar.
They can get a bit hot and sweaty but I can put up with that as they stop the chafing. If I am out all day they fold up small enough to stick a spare in my bag!
I have even been known to wear them under some very scratchy linen trousers!

starfishmummy · 02/06/2013 21:32

Ps I would usually go for a slightly generous size to help with airflow!

RiotsNotDiets · 02/06/2013 21:57

you see, I think maybe leggings would be better than those, because they're mostly cotton so are breathable.

I'm off to check those out, Starfish. Grin
I usually go with the Evans comfort shorts, but they do have a habit of riding up. I'm a size 16 at the moment, but even when I slimmed down to a 12/14 I still just don't like the feel of flesh on flesh under my skirts.

Corygal · 02/06/2013 22:11

Leggings and a maxi look good - I wear boy shorts if I wear pants at all.

starfishmummy · 03/06/2013 16:08

I prefer them to leggings or the comfort shorts; but each to their own.

Vegehamwidge · 03/06/2013 16:26

A cotton or perhaps silk version of those culottes would be great.

daftdame · 03/06/2013 16:44

Amazon do culottes slips, various kinds. I think they're great for the hot weather, cool and comfortable. Stop thighs chafing etc and look like ordinary (fairly) underwear. The silky kind stops dresses sticking to them, which can happen with 2 lots of 'peachy' textured cotton.

lynniep · 03/06/2013 16:50

I always wear leggings with dresses when I'm bigger. Which I am right now. And then some. I have to say those culotte slips are a new one on me. I may have to try!

lynniep · 03/06/2013 16:53

PMSL at this review'

I received these sensuous nylon pettipants as a gift. The nylon is pure excitement to wear. They function most favourably as sleepwear and playwear in the bedroom. My wife and I each have our own matching panties now. We originally had some with the 4" inseam but I kept falling out the leg opening so I changed up to these. We wear them in warmer weather to lounge and play in infront of the t.v. The silky fabric doesn't bind or bunch up and they feel so good as they caress your every move. Great bedtime undies ! '

daftdame · 03/06/2013 16:55

I know, I saw that! Grin

Locketjuice · 03/06/2013 17:19

Nothing lurks under mine.. You can see my underwear if I wear it.. So I just don't Smile

It's very comfy Smile

CatherineofMumbles · 03/06/2013 17:26

Agree with Locket. In any case, surely the whole point of a maxi is that you don't have to wear anything in the nether regions? Which is why they didn't used to, until recently when skirts got shorter.

RiotsNotDiets · 03/06/2013 18:15

If I was slim I'd probably not bother with anything underneath, but I'm still carrying a whole load of baby weight around 2 years later so I find my wobbly thighs rub together as I walk and I get uncomfortable.

Haha love that review!
