This is going to sound like a massive stealth boast but...

I'm going out to Monaco for a month for work. I'll be staying on a yacht (which will totally out me to anyone who knows me in RL). What on earth do I wear? I'm not exactly going to be going out to casinos or anything but I would like to blend in which may be difficult given my current wardrobe which is rather weird eclectic. I could probably afford to buy one or two new things from H&M or somewhere before I go, but that's about my limit budget-wise. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Smile

Can you say what work you'll be doing? Do your clothes need to be practical or can you wear maxi dresses, shorts etc?

Gemini1974 · 27/05/2013 17:13

Do a sweep of the charity shops in the local area. Most of them are jam packed full of nice linen trousers/smart casual items, usually brand named and in almost new condition.
And you'd be contributing to a good cause.

cocolepew · 27/05/2013 17:28

I would wear a life jacket.

Crutchlow35 · 27/05/2013 17:41

I'd look at the photos from the GP at the weekend and get some ideas from there. If touch I'd just take a selection of nice dresses m

Wilding · 27/05/2013 18:08

Thanks guys! Can't really say about the job - clothes don't really need to be practical but I can't really wear anything that's too casual or revealing

Thanks for the hint about the charity shops - I love scouting for bargains so will definitely do that! And will look at the Grand Prix pictures for ideas.

I want a job like yours. Sorry, I know that's not very helpful ...

Wilding · 27/05/2013 20:40

Thanks Leverette - that sounds like a very workable look! Have sandals & mahoosive sunglasses, might have to go on a trouser-scavenging mission this week Smile

I used to have the most beautiful pair of flattering linen trousers which I chucked in a fit of tidying - kicking myself now!

What Farley said

DoctorAnge · 27/05/2013 20:45

You lucky old thing.
Dresses are v big there, lots and lots of bold colour.

DoctorAnge · 27/05/2013 20:47

I would also say the ultra feminine look is key.

JamInMyWellies · 27/05/2013 20:49

I used to have a job as a nanny and spent many weeks on yacht. Not as glam as people would like to think.

But when we were in a port I would always go for smartish shorts with a polo shirt or nice blouse. Nothing revealing.

For outings onshore generally to dinner I had a few pairs of nice smart white trousers/jeans and would wear ballet pumps or moccasins with again a nice top.

Neutral jewellery and minimal makeup.

Dilidali · 27/05/2013 20:53

No high heels or coloured soles on an yacht. White sole only is what I know. I don't know if this etiquette applies to all yachts/countries etc, learnt that in NZ.

TK Maxx is perfect for this, have a look on their website.
Tempting as it may be not to, please make sure you are covered up, long sleeves, sunhat, the works, because it's going to burn!!!
Try a smart linen shirt. I wear long sleeved silk tops when it is hot, not heavy silk, the almost see through one. Same silk but double layer for trousers.
Good cotton/bamboo T-shirt, shorts?
Have fun!

amazingface · 27/05/2013 20:54

Le sigh

how fabulous

In my experience, women on the Riviera are quite understated but luxe in their approach to summertime dressing. I wouldn't go too blinging tbh or you might feel overdressed. If you have good sandals that go with everything and good sunglasses, you're onto a winner. I'd get a Zara dress as well, something cool and throwy-on-y, something that looks great with both sandals and heels. Something like this?

For the weekend: A black racer-back vest worn with sandals and cuffed boyfriend jeans, and a cross-body bag.

Actually, I'm not sure I'd bring heels at all, maybe just everyday sandals and posh sandals.

Hm.

And a good but flattering hat.

And I agree with Dillidali - do make sure to cover up on the yacht, the sun can be very strong.

Wilding · 28/05/2013 12:05

Amazing - thanks so much everyone!

Off to Oxford Street this evening to see what I can find in the luxe-understated-feminine category...

What sort of yacht? Massive motor-gin palace or sailing yacht? Big difference!

worldgonecrazy · 28/05/2013 14:50

I'd buy some decent well-fitting jeans, and some simple but stylish tops, whatever suits you. I'm a chiffony type person. Some nice sandals, big sunglasses and some chunky jewellery.

The most important asset is poise. Walk tall and as if you own the place/yacht.

White always seems to be a popular colour - completely impractical and screams that you can afford the dry-cleaning/replacement bill.

Don't worry. There are lots of women with "eclectic" taste (in everything) in Monaco.

FrumpyPumpy · 28/05/2013 16:02

Sainsbo's have lovely linen trousers in white or navy at the mo.

That is all.

Aprilfoolishness - it belongs to a Russian millionaire who lives on it part-time so I'm guessing quite big Grin

I'm afraid I can't really be trusted with white clothes, I'm very good at spilling stuff down myself Blush
