Wow - really seeing the effects of getting my colours done!

Just a witter really! I had my colours done a few months ago and have really found it has made a difference to my approach to shopping and clothes in general. The proof of the pudding came last week when 3 of us (me, dh and dd) went away for 6 nights with just 2 locker sized cases. Because my wardrobe "works" so much better now I was able to travel with so much less and still look coordinated and together. Really, really pleased. (And, no, I am not a colour consultant - just a happy p/t teacher who has really learned to dress better.)

I hope you don't mind a quick question to the experts on here.

Once you have had colours done does it last a lifetime or do we change as we age?

I'd be tempted to go with DD (10) as she is just starting to get interested in what she wears and 'fashion' and I'm rather clueless.

orangeandemons · 28/05/2013 15:23

Georgina I thought people who tanned easily were more likely to have cool colouring and be winters or summers. I look nothing like a traditional summer, I have green eyes, chestnutty hair and look very sallow and Oliver. But I am an absolute summer. Blues and pinks all the way....

orangeandemons · 28/05/2013 15:23

Olivey.....ipad took over there.

Pfaffer · 28/05/2013 15:27

It's not just trying on clothes and looking in the mirror.
For one thing, the lighting is so (deliberately) appalling in most changing rooms that you can't see your normal skin tone and whether or not it works with the colour of the clothes.

I don't know how to recognize skin tone. Also, I can't see myself properly. Bad divorce, lack of just about everything. Confidence, money etc. I kind of think colour analysis.might help me.

Pfaffer · 28/05/2013 16:54

It is very expensive, isn't it? How long does a session last?

Whoknowswhocares · 28/05/2013 17:10

This is really timely for me. For years I've tried to decide on my season on and off too tight and worried about seeming vain/silly have prevented a proper consult wavering between summer/autumn but never feeling quite right about it
I have read a lot recently and had a bit of an epiphany. Bought a fleece in a colour which seemed to make my eyes really blue and bright. Noticing that made me assess the other colours that just sort of 'work' and I think I am a bright spring. The dark brown hair had always made me discount it before, so kicking myself for not going sooner.
I might still go for a consult sometime, but going to live as a bright spring for a while because it just feels right

Lioninthesun · 28/05/2013 17:35

Wow, I have absolutely no idea what season I am... Sounds like I might be a summer lie orangesandemons - green eyes, light brown hair and tan easily (with freckles!). Sadly I used to be a tom boy so have spent most of my life avoiding pink but have been told cornflower blue suits me very well before. You don't tend to see it around much though, sadly.
Must save up and do this before we move, then I can clear out the wardrobe and have a fresh start!

nkf · 28/05/2013 17:55

Whoknows, I have felt too tight and too worried about being thought vain. but with your feisty nickname, you should be up for it.

Have just arranged to have mine done with DD and then I had a thought - would it be totally ridiculous to take DS (13) as well? He is eyerolling but I reckon I can bribe him into it and frankly has no colour sense at all. Would it be barking?

in fact Sassy, dye them with teabags. It 'vintage creams' any white..
I claim your £25.

Mudwiggle · 29/05/2013 23:40

I would love to do this, but moneywise really can't justify it. Sad I will ask DH if he would offer this as my bday present (Oct), but in the meantime, can anyone suggest a book or website to give me some hints as to my 'season'?

TIA.

Lioninthesun · 30/05/2013 00:30

Mud I found this site which has me as a soft Autumn
personalitycafe.com/general-chat/37461-what-your-color-season-spring-summer-autumn-winter-fun.html

willowisp · 30/05/2013 00:35

Hmmm, I'm a CMB autumn & when the consultant did me many years ago, she said I looked 'stunning' in black & black is in my wallet.

Having said that, I very very rarely wear black (cos its boring), preferring navy blue. I've completely over done brown & now loathe it. Hmm

Actually I pretty much dislike all the autumn colours..they are dullsville, I want to be a Spring Grin But it appears my eyes are too dark.

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 30/05/2013 00:50

Definitely worth saving up for. It's the gift that keeps on giving! I didn't know JL did this either; I did HoC and the great thing about their method, for me, is that everything in the palette matches me, which makes it really easy to put outfits together.

I don't have to agonise over how many things a top or skirt will 'go with,' I just buy what I like in the right colours and somehow it all hangs together.
It does help that I'm a Sweet Pea Summer, so the effect to aim for is supposed to be like a jar of sweet peas, or a watercolour Smile.
I hardly ever achieve it though

Lioninthesun · 30/05/2013 01:01

Willow you have dark eyes? I was going on that mainly due to having similar hair colour of the pics on that link and that my eyes are green/grey... There seem to be quite a range of colours?

Rulesgirl · 30/05/2013 01:40

I personally think that it does depend on your hair colour as well and if you go from blond to brown or brown to blond or to red or black etc etc then your colours will definitely need to be changed.

themaltesecat · 30/05/2013 02:07

I think this thread has changed my life.

Want to go shopping now but it's 2am, damn it. Grin

mrspolkadotty · 30/05/2013 08:17

Lioninthesun

I also used this link and came out as a deep autumn, although could possibly be a deep winter Confused. I'm still debating whether or not to go for a proper colour consultation though. How much is the JL one does anyone know? I keep telling myself that although it's an initial outlay it should help save money in the long run, right? and the kids will love living on jam butties this month.

Do the charts mean that you will suit every colour given for your type though? On the deep autumn one is yellow and i look hideous in yellow, absolutely awful. If it depends on shade then i need to get over my mental block of ignoring anything yellow when i'm shopping.

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 30/05/2013 08:48

You won't necessarily have to start wearing yellow - besides anything else, if you just don't like it, don't wear it!
But with the HoC method, your swatches are graded as to how well they suit you. So you'll have a few '100%, 2 star' colours, meaning you could wear them from head to toe and look fabulous, down to '25%, 2 ticks' (I think), meaning you'd be best just using them as accessory coulours, or as part of a print. Yellow is one of those for me.

I'm not entirely convinced by that link to slebs, I have to say.I've seen Anjelina Jolie, Leona Lewis and Helen Mirren described as Summers before, but it's really just speculation as you can't 'diagnose' someone just from looking at them.

And the slebs' colouring often changes depending on who their make up artist has been that day.

orangeandemons · 30/05/2013 08:49

I'm not sure that link is correct. I have chestnut hair and greenery veins, but am a summer

MadBusLady · 30/05/2013 08:51

I have peered and peered under different lights and asked DP and concluded that I have turquoise veins. Unhelpful sodding veins.

I think I'm the same as you though mrspolkadotty.
